IntroductionWelcome to the manual for the new on-air visual style for Arte. This document is here to do a number of things and details how the new visual style should used. There are many new elements and this guide explains what each of them are, where to find them and how they all come together to create a bold new look for Arte. Throughout this document you will find information about our new idents, stings and category animations, as well as the on-screen presentation system, promo packaging and how they work together in a programme junction.

In execution, the brand idea gives the ARTE logo the lead role, it becomes the magnet. In all broadcast content; brand idents, programme idents, stings and OSP & Promos – the Arte magnet consistently pulls various subject matter towards it in unexpected ways. To ensure flexibility and reflect the full breadth of our content, the magnetic theme is brought to life in a number of different ways, from the literal to the metaphorical.

Our new brand idea ensures we can communicate a consistent narrative, helps us represent our varied content in a way that engages a wider audience and reinforces our position as Europe’s leading culture channel.

In the world we live in today, culture is fluid, dynamic and forever changing.

As a living archive and as a content curator and creator, we gather the best of cultural activities, influences and endeavours from Europe and the world – capturing them in programmes and exciting content broadcasts and sharing them to an audience of over 25 million people a month.

To help us convey our role as Europe’s leading culture channel, we have developed a new brand idea: Arte. Europe’s Culture Magnet. This single-minded idea is inspired by the observation that we ‘bring Europe’s culture to one place’.

The Arte logo is an important part of our history as well as the future of the channel. It’s simple, bold and elegant and plays an integral part of the new channel identity - it’s Europe’s culture magnet.

It’s important the logo is used correctly and in the way described in these guidelines. The artwork for the logo should never be redrawn or amended.

For information on using the Arte logo off-screen, please see the Brand Guidelines.

On-screen, the Arte logo has been adapted to work in a physical space , as it’s our ‘culture magnet’, it needs dimension.

Never recreate the 3D version of the logo, only ever use the official files provided.

Basic elementsLogo positioningWhen used on-screen, the logo is used in a new and dynamic way that will become synonymous with Arte.

The logo should only ever be used vertically and centred this gives more space to act as a canvas, and allows the ‘magnet’ to pull things from right to left.

The logo only has two positions when used on-screen. These are shown opposite. For consistency, it’s important that the logo is always placed in one of these two positions.

The positions opposite can be used on the coloured backgrounds or on footage that can be seen throughout this document.

Basic elementsBugAn exception to the two logo positions is the bug as shown opposite. The bug also appears vertically and has been placed within on-screen action safe guides to ensure it’s visible.

As it’s a bug, it’s used at 20% white.

Basic elementsColourThere are 11 coloured gradient backgrounds that can be used within the on-screen system (see page xx)

To build on the logo positioning and concept of the magnet, the gradient works right (lightest) to left (darkest).

Only use the coloured backgrounds within the After Effects files. Please don’t create new ones.

The coloured backgrounds can be found in all After Effects project files mentioned in this document. Simply turn on the coloured layer you want and switch off those no longer needed.

Our typeface is a hugely important part of the visual identity as it creates a strong consistency throughout the on-screen junction.

Barna Stencil is our brand typeface. It’s used for all of our on-screen typography and has two weights - Bold and Regular.

The stencil version of Barna was chosen as it can be pulled apart for parts of the on-screen presentation (see pages xx-xx). These elements are fixed and shouldn’t be recreated.

This channel grid is the basis for all on-screen graphic layouts. The grid has been used to determine where imagery and typography are seen.

Channel elementsIdentsThe central point of the on-screen junction is where the channel idents sit. They are an encapsulation of Arte being ‘Europe’s Culture Magnet’

They are bold, elegant and beautifully crafted and are used both as a reminder to the viewer of where they are, but also as a breath within the channel junction that doesn’t rely on promotion of content.

There are five idents that use the same structure: we begin as each material or object create an outline of europes map - as we move through the ident, the map is pulled to one place and all of the particles build up to create an abstract version of the Arte logo.

Each ident has been designed to have its own unique colour palette and style, kept consistent by its movement and form.

Each ident is 30 seconds in total; 10 seconds long with a 20 second living hold (see page xx).

Channel elementsIdent Living holdEach ident is 30 seconds in total; the main formation of the map to logo is completed within 10 seconds leaving a 20 second living hold that can be used to cut into whatever length may be needed.

The living hold features the formed logo, that moved softly and slightly across those 20 seconds.

It’s very important that the idents are never cut at less than 10 seconds so the logo is always fully formed within the animation.

Channel elementsStingsWhen leaving a programme and moving into the junction, the first of the channel elements the viewer should see are one of the seven channel stings.

The stings have been created as little 4 second animations to guide the viewer into the junction.

They expand on the idea of ‘Europe’s culture magnet’ but do it in a different way from the idents.In 4 seconds of animation, we see varying objects being pulled toward the logo. They are intended to ‘tease’ the viewer; as they’re very quick they require multiple views to understand exactly what’s happening. The subjects for each of the stings have been chosen to reflect the type of content Arte shows, but in a slightly more unusual and abstract way than the Idents (see page xx) and Nows (see page xx).

When using the stings, all 4 seconds should be used.

Channel elementsNowsAnimations have been created to reflect 12 different subject categories. These are the Now animations and should be used just before a particular programme is played out.

They expand on the style of the channel stings, using the same magnetic motion from right to left, but are more specific around the content they are married to. Objects related to a specific category are pulled to the logo in an unexpected way.

Always make sure the animation used makes sense for the content you’re promoting. For example, when a film is about to be played out, the Cinema animation should be used or for something related to Science, use the Science and Tech animation.

Channel elementsNow TypographyAs the Nows are used as introductions to category specfifc programmes, there are some rules around typography.

The first line of the Nows should always be the same: Prochainement for french, Und jetzt for german.

First line should be set in Barna Stencil Bold (55px) and any subsequent lines set in Barna Stencil Regular (55px).

When placing typography on the Nows, it should always be centred to the screen. This is regardless of how many lines are created and as shown in the examples opposite.

Make sure that the programme title doesn’t bleed over the Title Safe grid (see page ??) as shown opposite. This is 193px from the right edge of the screen.

Not all typography starts from the same place. See specific category pages for starting position.

Type only appears in either black or white please do not change from the After Effects file.
