Based out of Maple Valley,Wash. Chris Powell Sr. and hisson Chris Powell Jr. operate alarge operation with over 50pieces of equipment, two

sites for firewood, log storageand roughly 15 employees.

They do small logging jobs andhave two cranes they use fortree removal in residential ar-

eas. Their cranes allow them towork faster and cleaner.

Maple Valley, Wash. is a town of roughly 25,000 people in King Coun-

ty, Wash. just outside of Seattle. The area was settled in 1879 and has

a long history of coal, lumber milling and railroads. Coal was brought

in from Black Diamond, Wash. and nearby Cedar Mountain and mining

occured as late as 1947. The city was incorporated in 1997 and hosts

the annual Maple Valley Days Parade in June of each year. It’s been

named one of the top ten family cities in the USA. It’s population

grew from 1,211 in 1990 to 14,209 in 2000.

ber waking up at 2:30 in themorning and going on with acrew. i got to be around that, igot to learn that. it seems likepeople were better timber cut-ters back then and being aroundthat really helped me a lot.”

After doing just strictly cut-ting for many years, the compa-ny added their tree servicearound 2000. Friends of chrissr. began to convince him thatmoving into residential treework around the quickly grow-ing seattle area was the way togo.

“it felt like the logging busi-ness was getting worse andworse and my buddy just toldme, what are you going to do for

your retirement?,’” he said. At first, chris Jr. said he

was resistant to the idea, sayingthat he was a cutter and theybelonged out in the woods. Afterthe business took off and he got

used to it, chris now enjoys it. The company began using

their own cranes since 2007.while other companies may hirea crane for specific jobs, P’n’dprides itself in its ability tobring their crane to any sitethey deem necessary. They don’thave to wait around for some-one’s crane or self-loader, theycan get the job done when theyneed it done. The result hasbeen increased efficiency andmore business.

A busy job site for P’n’d canproduce up to 4 or 5 log loads aday, and all the mess can bechipped up and hauled away.

“The crane makes it faster forus,” chris Jr. said. “it’s a lot lesswork too and we can utilize thelumber value. we like to takelogs. it also makes it a lot niceron the customer’s ground. Thereis a lot less debris when you cancrane things.”

The company has two 30-tonManitex cranes — one servingas the backup — and 15 employ-ees. The company also has afleet of support trucks and over50 pieces of equipment total.

“i couldn’t fathom doing ourjobs without the crane now,”chris Jr. said. “we could do itbut i just wouldn’t want to doit.”

Along with their cranes, thecompany has two 75-foot buckettrucks, five chippers, four chip-per trucks, four stump grinders,3 self-loading log trucks, a

Along with their Maple Valleylocation that has a firewood pro-cessor and cords of firewood asfar as the eye can see, the com-

pany also has a 40-acre site inRavensdale, wash. where theykeep their logs and more fire-wood. They sell up to 1,300 cordsof wood a year.

“i’m wood hoarder,” chris sr.said with a laugh.

The up and down months inthe amount of work has givenway to constant work. The work-

“we’ve got some of the besttree guys you could ever find,”whitlock said. “guys that canclimb and rappel the best i’ve ev-er been around. chris Jr., he’sbeen involved with cutting a longtime, since he was 16, so as faras i’m concerned, we’ve got thebest guys.”

Their reputation has made itsrounds around the area asthey’ve done work on freeway-

widening projects, Boeing sites,the naval shipyards in Bremer-ton, Ft. lewis and they’veworked as far south as olympia.in all they have around 100 con-tractors that they work for alongwith homeowners’ individualprojects.

“Being a timber cutting, ikind of learned what it means tobe flat out working,” chris sr.said. “i’ve never had an easyday’s work, although now i getup a little later in the morning.we incorporate how my dadtaught me how to work into thecompany, and we expect theguys that work for us to do thesame and it shows.”

This comes afterthe economic momentum in chinaslows and european importers oflumber has used the weakness tothe euro against the dollar to theiradvantage, spendMatter.com re-ports.

it seems, the website says, theus lumber industry has not react-ed fast enough to the drop in de-mand and has caused a significantlevel of overcapacity in the mar-ket.

Timber harvest in the us hasgone up for the fourth consecutiveyear, spend Matter.com says, soft-wood lumber harvest was five per-cent high in the third quarter in2014 than in the previous year. inoctober 2014, us lumber produc-tion was 2.8 billion board feetwhich was up seven percent fromthe previous month according tothe western wood Products Asso-ciation lumber Track.

This comes at a puzzling timeas the housing and constructionindustry has added roughly 48,000jobs in december 2014, and290,000 total for the whole year.Thats the largest increase since2005 and shows signs of the econo-my picking up.

litigation to block forest sales bythe federal government, the tim-ber industry in southeast Alaskahas seen logging dwindle to just afew hundred jobs in the area. oncean economic driver, the Juneauempire reports, it has sufferedsince almost every large sale inthe Tongass area in the past 20

years has been appealed or litigat-ed.

For example the Big Thornesale was awarded last fall to theViking lumber co. but three con-servation groups - the southeastAlaska conservation council, thesierra club and the Alaskawilderness league brought law-suits against the u.s. Forest ser-vice.

The Alaskan House Resourcescommittee heard and held a billthat would give the Alaska de-partment of natural Resources theability to continue to fill the tim-ber gap supply left by federal salestied up in court. it’s expected to befall before a final court decisioncan be made.

For years, Alaska’s depart-ment of natural Resources hasbeen providing small timber salesto mills as a measure to provide astopgap source of material andwork. The proposed bill, HB87,

would remove some of the restric-tions place on the most flexiblestate timber sales while allowingthe state to continue supportingmills in southeastern Alaska.

would allow the state to continueselling while federal timber salescontinue to be fought over in court.
