Founded in 2011 by a retired military couple, Operation Black Hills Cabin is secluded on the edge of Custer, SD, in the beautiful Black Hills. Its purpose is to offer a week- long respite to qualifying wounded veterans and their immediate families, at little or no expense to them. How do I qualify?Military service in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Free-dom, or Operation New Dawn; Combat injured with a minimum of 30%(copies of award letter and DD Form 214 or current PCS orders are required with application). Medal of Honor RecipientsWarrior Transition Unit Members (with required documentation)To apply, visit our website for an application.

Frequently Asked QuestionsIs the cabin wheelchair accessible?The cabin is wheelchair accessible, with wide doorways and a roll in shower.

Is there an airport in Custer?Rapid City Regional Airport is the closest commercial airport with daily flights serviced by most major air-lines. It is about an hour drive away.

What about pets & smoking?The cabin is 100% non-smoking. No pets are allowed, unless they are service animals. See website for required documentation.

Are there medical facilities?Custer Regional Medical Center (1/2 block from cabin)Rapid City Regional Medical Center (40 miles north of Custer)Hot Springs VA Hospital (32 miles south of Custer)Ft. Mead VA Hospital (70 miles north of Custer)

What will this respite cost?The lodging is at no cost. Several local restaurants offer free meals and many area attractions offer free admission (see website). Other ex-penses, such as transportation, are the family’s responsibility. We have teamed up with Air Compassion for air travel assistance.
