Rally at SJ City Hall to Demand a Solution for Burglary Epidemic in Evergreen

An open letter to my fellow Evergreen Residents: 

My name is Brian Tran, an Evergreen resident for the last 25 years.  Exactly a month ago today, on August 25, 2014, I became a crime victim statistic for the first time in America.  I was victimized by a burglary in Evergreen.    

This is what it’s like to be violated by criminals who cowardly intrude into your own home: 

 

 

 

As I spent half a month to sort through my ransacked home, I found my mother’s photo, my father’s photo with the Vice President of Vietnam (my father worked in the Presidential Palace in Saigon to ensure the security of President Nguyen Van Thieu during the Vietnam War), the photo of the 21‐foot boat that my family escaped Vietnam with, in  a brutal storm in the Pacific Ocean , from fear of communist persecution, (that photo reminds me of my path to freedom to America), my home in a refugee camp, my father’s diary, my High School Class Valedictorian trophy, and my photo from high school (looking at it reminds me to fight back), all thrown all over the place in my house. 

 

 

 

These items have high sentimental values to me and are irreplaceable.  I was among the fortunate ones because I still possess these items.  Not only did the burglar violate me, I felt my deceased parents were also violated.  Numerous 

other Evergreen victims have lost many items to these thieves that are irreplaceable.  To say that these victims were violated by these criminals is an understatement. 

I was among the first group of Vietnamese‐Americans in the United States to have graduated High School Class Valedictorian.  The generation before me helped keep San Jose a safe place to live.  I am grateful to those who have enabled a safe environment for me to go to school.  I would never have achieved my goal if I had lived in the Evergreen of today, with constant fear of suspicious people lurking in my neighborhood daily, looking to ransack homes.  My life was spared by God once in the middle of the ocean in a storm that looked like scenes from “The Perfect Storm”.  I felt my life was spared for a reason.  America and the American people had done so much for my family and me when we first arrived in the US and were very poor.  I can no longer stay silent and not make an effort to help the people of Evergreen.   

My neighbor, who was also a recent crime victim, tells me “I feel like I’m living in a prison in my own home.”  Another nextdoor.com neighbor posted that “We are all homeowners living here who are terrified what we might discover when we get home in the evening.”  It is no longer safe in Evergreen.  A burglar recently walked in Evergreen in broad daylight with a crowbar, and upon seeing the resident, he simply turned around and casually walked away.  For him not to run away, indicated to me that these burglars no longer fear the rule of law.  He would have no hesitance to physically harm any Evergreen resident who gets in his way. 

 

 

 

 

 

Two weeks ago, as I drove through the off‐ramp at Yerba Buena and Highway 101, I saw all these graffiti.  I felt that Evergreen has changed for the worse, that those graffiti said “Welcome to Evergreen”, but in graffiti language. 

 

 

 

 

 

Not too long ago, San Jose was known as the Safest Big City in America.  However, as ex‐Police Chief Lansdowne recently stated:  “Public safety is the absolute Number 1 priority of city government, and they failed at that process here in San Jose.” 

From August 22 to September 21, there were approximately 90 burglaries reported in Evergreen.  Keep in mind that the area bordered by Tully Road, Highway 101, and Capitol Expressway was excluded.  If included, the Evergreen burglary number would likely have exceeded 100 in just one month.    

I challenge you to name a district anywhere in the US where many homes sell for $1 million+, and has a burglary rate of about 3 per day.  This is an epidemic in Evergreen.  Evergreen is no longer a safe place for residents to live, no longer safe for students to go to school in fear of crimes, violence,  and gangs.   I urge all of you, my friends and neighbors, and all residents who have been crime victims in Evergreen, to show up to the San Jose City Council Meeting at City Hall on October 21 at 7:00 PM to show City officials our seriousness for a solution to this never‐ending Evergreen burglary problem.   

I propose the following: 

1) Demand the SJ City Council for an immediate SJPD Mobile Command Center to be stationed directly inside Evergreen 24/7.  This would allow for much faster police response time to burglaries, to arrest criminals involved in burglaries, to investigate suspicious people constantly scoping our neighborhoods, and to restore public safety to Evergreen. 

2) Demand the SJ City Council to assign as many burglary detectives to this Mobile Command Unit as needed to bring burglaries under control, per the Police Chief Esquivel. 

3) Demand that this Mobile Command Center be stationed in Evergreen permanently until a SJPD Evergreen substation can be set up here in the future.  (FYI, the South SJ Police substation was built at a cost of $90.8 million, and Evergreen homeowners pay as much, if not more, property taxes than those in South San Jose.) 

4) Move this Mobile Command Center, as frequently as needed, into high visibility areas to remind the criminals of this unit’s existence just several minutes away from anywhere in Evergreen.   

The Mobile Command Center could look something like this: 

 

  When criminals go unpunished in Evergreen, we allow them to become more brazen, and they will eventually take over control of Evergreen.  These criminals are bringing with them graffiti, gangs, drugs, guns, and violence into Evergreen.  I anticipate that the number of burglaries would drop significantly when a SJPD Mobile Command Center is stationed directly inside Evergreen, with burglary detectives actively investigating Evergreen burglaries.  Consequently, other Evergreen crimes would also drop because they’re all related.  If San Jose’s elected officials won’t provide us with a solution to this urgent public safety matter, as they’re elected to do, then, we need to unite and urge our fellow San Jose voters to vote them out of office.   I stand by my praise of our Police Chief Esquivel.  The SJPD is not the problem.  The SJPD is our solution.   The SJPD is understaffed .  We need to demand the City Council to provide the SJPD the resources it needs to resolve Evergreen’s growing burglary and other crime‐related problems.  As this crisis gets worse and the reputation grows that Evergreen is a crime‐infested neighborhood, buyers of $1 to $3 million dollar homes will opt to purchase elsewhere.  Thus, our home values will drop further in the future.  I cannot do this on my own.  I need your help.  I need every available Evergreen neighbor to show up at the City Council meeting at City Hall on Tuesday October 21 at 7:00 PM (but make sure there’s at least one person at home to watch for burglars) and speak with one voice, to demand that public safety be restored once and for all, to Evergreen.   We all live in an affluent community, and we can’t allow the criminals to turn Evergreen into a crime‐infested community, as they are attempting to do on a daily basis.  Enough is enough!    By the way, I was just contacted a few minutes ago by Mike Honda’s friend, and was asked to meet with him this Saturday at a private residence in the Bel Aire/Hillstone neighborhood.  Mike Honda is our US Congressman representing Silicon Valley.  I will discuss this issue with him on Saturday .  I will also ask Dave Cortese to help us with City Hall.     

If you intend to show up to City Hall with me, click “Thank”, and I’ll know I have your support. If we don’t show up in force to City Hall, burglaries and crimes will only get worse in Evergreen. The people who don’t want us to rally in City Hall are the criminals themselves!  If we don’t unite at City Hall and help make Evergreen a safer place to live for the children of Evergreen, then, who will? Thank you for your support.  Your fellow Evergreen neighbor, Brian Tran
