(Prof. Hans-
(Teatro Comunale Giusseppe
Verdi di Trieste)

(Pesaro, Rossini
年 5月 14日於北京全球一帶一路峰會的音樂會擔任音樂總指揮,得到中外領導人的高度讚揚;

Lu Jia recebeu do Departamento

(Kto$ jsú bo$í
bojovníci)。
利 ”。對於任何一個諳熟本民族歷史的捷克聽眾來說,這段音樂勢必會激發出強烈的民族認同感;
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Descreve o rio
Vltava, o maior do país atualmente designado por República Checa. Smetana escreveu: “A
composição descreve o curso do rio Vltava, começando pelas duas pequenas nascentes, o
A música
segue de perto a sua descrição. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
feminista do mundo.
O título do andamento
O título do sexto andamento
futuro triunfante e glorioso do país. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Programme Notes ------------------------------------------
“I am the creator of the Czech style in the dramatic as well as the symphonic field,” Smetana
wrote in 1882, the year Má vlast was performed for the first time as a complete cycle of
symphonic poems. Bed ich Smetana fought hard for the cause of Czech nationalism in music.
He dropped out of school at the age of 16 in order to earn a living as a player and music teacher.
He worked as Court Pianist and composed in the “modernist” line after Liszt, whom he admired.
He self-exiled to Sweden in 1856 for the lack of understanding in his native Bohemia. He returned
in 1861 when the Provisional Theater, a home for Czech operas, was to be built in Prague. Failing
to obtain the post of its director, he composed a Czech-language opera, The Brandenburgers
in Bohemia, for a competition. As a Czech educated in German, he taught himself Czech for the
purpose of blazing a trail for Czech operas. He succeeded, and became a master in this genre
with The Bartered Bride, which was premiered in 1866, the year he became the conductor of
the Provisional Theater. Then followed eight stormy but prosperous years for him and for Czech
music, after which, in 1874, he went deaf within two months. Fighting against God, he composed
defiantly, and produced his final masterpieces on which his current fame mostly rests -- the cycle
of symphonic poems Má vlast, String Quartet “From My Life” -- as well as three more operas.
In his final years, verging on going mad, Smetana was finally recognized as the father of Czech
nationalism in music. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Má vlast is, according to Czech musicologist Marta Ottlová, “a musical apotheosis of everything
dear to Smetana, filled with mythical and historical reminiscences and propelling his emergent
nation toward a vision of the future.” It now occupies a central place in Smetana’s output and in
Czech music. It is now an established tradition to open the Prague Spring Music Festival every
year with a performance of Má vlast on May 12, the anniversary of Smetana’s death. --------------
The six symphonic poems that form the cycle describe historical landmarks, tell about legends,
portray the life of ordinary people, and are fully soaked in the composer’s fervent love for his
native land. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The title of the first movement, Vy!ehrad, which literally translates as “high castle”, refers to a
historical castle, possibly built in the 10th century, which was the seat of earliest Czech Kings,
overlooking the Vltava. Legend has it that the earliest people on this land live around the castle,
and out of their settlement was born the city of Prague. Smetana begins the piece with a most
beautiful harp motif, which will appear as a uniting figure in the second and sixth movements.
According to Smetana, it symbolizes the eternity of Vy!ehrad as well as the pride and glory of the
people. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The second movement, Vltava, stands out as Smetana’s best known piece of music. It describes
the Vltava River, the largest river in what is now Czech Republic. Smetana writes: “The
composition describes the course of the Vltava, starting from the two small springs, the Cold
and Warm Vltava, to the unification of both streams into a single current, the course of the Vltava
through woods and meadows, through landscapes where a farmer’s wedding is celebrated, the
round dance of the mermaids in the night’s moonshine: on the nearby rocks loom proud castles,
palaces and ruins aloft. The Vltava swirls into the St John’s Rapids; then it widens and flows
toward Prague, past the Vy!ehrad, and then majestically vanishes into the distance, ending at the
Labe.” The music follows his description closely. -------------------------------------------------------
The third movement, "árka, tells the folk tale of girls uprising against male dominance, possibly
one of the earliest feminist stories in the world. The legend goes: Libu!e, chosen by her father
Krok, a mythical Czech ruler, as his successor, defiantly marries the ploughman P emysl, and
with him opens the P emysl dynasty. After her death, men, long dissatisfied with a female ruler,
soon subdue women to a lower status. Vlasta leads a group of women to rise up against male
rule, and her lieutenant "árka attracts a group of male warriors by tying herself to a tree and
pleading for help. The male leader Ctirad, who falls in love with her at first sight, saves her. "árka
offers a banquet to express her gratitude, but secretly feed them sleeping potions. The men
fell asleep, and a bloody massacre begins. The music begins with "árka’s recitative-like angry
curses, and after a march, we hear her pleading cries. Then Ctirad falls in love; a banquet ensues.
After an ominous note on the bassoon, the men meet their end. --------------------------------------
The fourth movement From Bohemia’s Woods and Fields doesn’t seem to have a specific
program. Marta Ottlová says that it “describes the beauties of the Czech landscape and,
typically, Smetana wrote that everyone can imagine the pictures as they will.” ----------------------
The fifth and sixth movements form a pair on the same theme: the Reformation and the Hussites.
At the beginning of the fifth movement, Tábor, we hear a new core motif, which is taken from
the Hussite chorale “Ye who are God’s Warriors”. Jan Hus, a pioneer in Reformation, was a
century earlier than Martin Luther. He referred to the Bible and the word of Jesus as the ultimate
authority, instead of clerical orders. The title of the movement refers to a castle of the Hussites.
Smetana says he aims to “extol the glory and greatness of the Hussites and their strength of
character.” The sixth movement takes its title from the Blaník Mountain where the Hussites,
defeated by the Habsburg Dynasty in 1620, hide out to wait for the suitable moment to save
their country. “Ye who are God’s Warriors” is also the chief material of this movement. In this,
Smetana connects Jan Hus to 19th century Czech nationalism, and the victorious ending of the
cycle thus points to the future triumph and glory of the country. --------------------------------------

-----------------------

Classical meets Pop. Lio Kuokman, a conductor and pianist at same time, will knock the piano
