Task 2 Read the texts about owning pets.
Text A
Want to get in shape? Get a dog! Research out today
has found that dog owners are among the fittest
people in the UK. It’s no surprise given that most
dogs to walk or play for at least an hour a day. It’s hard
to ignore a barking dog! It’s a great reason to get up
and get active!
Other pet owners also had lower blood pressure and
reported lower levels of stress than the general
population. Perhaps surprisingly, the owners of
snakes and lizards were the most relaxed of everyone
surveyed.
Text C
For the first time in many years, the number of people owning pets in the UK is decreasing.
The British seem to love animals as much as ever - so what could be behind this trend?
It’s clear that the recent economic crisis has made most people think twice about their spending.
Looking after a cat or dog can be expensive: with food, toys and veterinary bills to consider.
However, even in previous times of economic hardship, the Brits had continued to buy and
own pets
It seems that very high house prices might be to blame. Young people can’t afford mortgages
and are continuing to live in rented property for longer. If you want to rent a house or flat in
the UK, you usually have to obey certain rules. Normally you mustn’t smoke indoors, and often,
you can’t keep pets.
Text B
Task 2a Decide whether the statements are correct () or incorrect ().
a; Reptile owners are more relaxed than the owners of other animals.
b; Mortgages are too expensive for young owners.
c; Most dogs need less than an hour of exercise every day.
d; British people usually stop buying pets when the economy is bad.
e; Dogs are one of the most popular pets in the U.K.
f; Owning a pet can affect your health into a better way.

Task 2b In which text can you find the answer to the next questions? Write A, B or C.
Which text …
a; talks about a trend in pet ownership? _____
b; compares the number of cat owners with dog owners? _____
c; writes about the advantages of owning a pet? _____
d; makes a recommendation? _____
e; informs about an unexpected finding in a survey? _____
f; gives a brief history of owning a pet? _____

Task 3a Read the following Maori legend and put the paragraphs into the correct order,
write the letter of the paragraphs into the box below.
The Maoris are the native people of New Zealand. The traditional Maori world is an oral culture. Stories are told
over and over again, from one generation to the next.
b; But no birds answered him. So
Tanehokahoka asked Tui. “Tui, will you come
down?” Tui looked down and saw only cold,
dark earth. “I’m sorry, it’s dark and I’m afraid of
the dark.”
a; Tanehokahoka turned away from Tui, and asked Pukeko. “Pukeko, will you come down?”
Pukeko looked down at the ground and saw the cold, damp earth. “I’m sorry, I do not want to
get my feet wet on the damp ground.”
c; Tanehokahoka was sad, because he knew if
none of the birds came to help, his brother’s
trees would die, and also his birds would have
nowhere to live. Finally, Tanehokahoka turned
to Kiwi. “Kiwi, will you come down?” d; Kiwi looked up at the trees and
saw the sun through the leaves. He
looked down at the cold, damp,
dark earth. “I will,” he replied.
Tanehokahoka and Tanemahuta
were so happy and grateful to this
little bird.
e; One day, Tanemahuta, the god of the forest, looked up at his trees and noticed that they
didn’t look healthy. What was making them weak? He discussed the problem with his brother,
Tanehokahoka, who looked after all the birds in the sky. Tanemahuta spoke to all the birds:
“Something is eating the trees. I need one of you to come down from the sky and live here in
the forest, so that the trees can be saved. Who will come?”

f; Then Tanehokahoka turned to the other birds and said, “Tui, because you were too scared
to fly down from the sky, from now on you will wear the two white feathers at your neck to
show that you are not brave. Pukeko, because you did not want to get your feet wet, you will
live forever in the wet ground. Pipiwharauroa, because you were too busy building your nest,
from now on you will never build another nest. Instead, you will lay your eggs in other birds’
nests. But Kiwi, you will become the most well-known and most loved bird of them all.”
h; “But Kiwi,” said Tanemahuta, “you will
have to grow strong legs so that you can
break up the big logs on the ground. And
you will lose your beautiful feathers and
wings, and then you will never be able to
return to the sky. Will you still come down
to help?” Kiwi took one last look at all the
other birds and said a silent goodbye. “I
will.”
g; For the third time, Tanehokahoka asked
one of his birds to help. “Pipiwharauroa,
will you come down?” Pipiwharauroa, the
cuckoo, looked up at the trees and saw his
family in the branches. “I’m sorry, I’m busy
at the moment building my nest.”
