ClimateThe Basque Country has an oceanic type climate, humid on the coast and conti-nental inland. The temperatures are mild throughout the year, with rain more fre-quent in the spring and autumn, temper-ate winters and summers which are not too hot. ShoppingThere is a wide variety and diversity of products to choose from. In the three ma-jor cities there are antique shops. The tra-ditional basque craftsmanship is extremely interesting, and includes ceramics, glass, leather, articles made of “pelota”, enamels, iron and woodwork, damascenes, forge, traditional furnishings such as large chests, “korxas”, etc. High quality food products are plentiful, especially those labelled with the “K” of Kalitatea. Home-produced cheeses such as “Idiazabal”, sausages, typical sweets such as “vasquitos” and “neskitas” from Vitoria-Gasteiz, “Tostones” and “rellenos” from Bergaras, “tejas” from Tolosa or “canutillos” from Bilboa. Wines from Rioja Alavesa, cider from Astigartaga and “txakoli” from Getaria or Bakio.
EmergenciesThe 112 telephone provided by the Ert-zaintza (Autonomous Basque Police) re-sponds to all emergency calls in case of accident, fire or other emergencies.
Customs ProceduresNo vaccination is required to enter the country. As regards foreign money, all amounts greater than the equivalent of 6.000 euros per person must be declared in customs.

Official TimeThe official time in the Basque Country, as in the rest of the Spanish peninsula, is as follows: In the autumn-winter (GMT + 1) and in the spring-summer (GMT + 2).
CurrencyThe national currency of the Basque Coun-try is the euro.
PassportThe citizens of the European Community and some countries of Western Europe areadmitted with their Identity Card. For citi-zens of other countries, a current passport or passport and visa are required, depend-ing on the circumstances. For further infor-mation, consult Spanish Embassies and Consulates.
BeachesThe water temperature in summer is verypleasant, ranging from 19º to 22ºC. Nev-ertheless, in the months of January and February, the temperatures drop to 9º or 10ºC.
TipsAll prices and invoices include the tip. Therefore, it is not considered obligatory. Nevertheless, and if considered suitable, a tip can be left to express satisfaction for good service.
TaxisAll authorized taxis clearly display the sta-tus of their public service. There is a fixed price for beginning service, plus a fee de-pending on the time and the area covered, which are regulated by publicly displayed tariffs. All taxis have a taximeter which in-dicates the amount due. If there are ad-ditional fees, these should be displayed to the public.
ShopsThe usual hours are from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4 p.m to 8 p.m. Many shops are open on Saturdays. The department stores remain open at lunch time and open on Saturday morning and afternoon.
VoltajeThe usual electrical current is 220 V and 50hertz. The outlets are European, with two round connectors.

LanguagesIn the Basque Country, there are two of-ficial languages: Euskara (the Basque lan-guage) and Spanish. Spanish is spoken by all of the inhabitants. Euskara, which is used in a more limited manner, is the Basque Country’s own original language. It is a language whose origins have not been determined and it has no apparent similarity with any of the neighbouring lan-guages. The signs found on roads, in air-ports, ports, official centres, etc. are often bilingual. Many Basque people also speak French or English.

VATThe VAT or Value Added Tax (IVA) is ap-plied to all products and services. In res-taurants, hotels and rural tourist centres it is 8%. For citizens of countries which are not members of the European Common Market who are visiting as tourists, the VAT may be reimbursed for purchases esceed-ing 60 euros (tax-free). To get your VAT back it is absolutely essential to show the invoice and the product or goods at the export customs post when leaving the last member country of the EU that you have visited.
