EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Ottawa / jan. 26 - feb. 09, 2013 PaGe 3
www.employmentnews.com
Many newcomers are offered entry into Canada because of their high education and skill levels. Despite this head start, some lack the proper preparation, expectations and "game plan" to nd work – not to mention the obstacles they often face in nding jobs in their eld. Thankfully, Toronto offers many programs and services to help internationally trained professionals and tradespersons prepare for the Canadian workforce. If you are internationally trained in a non-health regulat-ed profession, such as engineering, one of your rst steps should be contacting Global Experience Ontario for an overview about working in your trade or profes-sion in this province. This means learning about regula-tory bodies, professional associations and document assessment. Internationally-trained health professionals who want information about working in Ontario and the conditions they need to meet to do so can visit the HealthForceOntario website. It's also a good idea to contact the regulatory and licensing bodies governing professions directly. As well, the Ontario Government has partnered with a number of regulatory associations to create career maps for internationally trained professionals. Career maps explain every step of the registration process, including language requirements, industry trends, labour market conditions, credential assessment pro-cess and licensing fees.
Credential AssessmentHaving your credentials assessed is a critical rst step to see how far -- or how close -- you are to being able to work in your profession in Canada. To do this, con-tact World Education Services, International Credential Assessment Service of Canada or the Comparative Education Service of the University of Toronto.
Language and Employment ServicesGenerally, English is a key skill for anyone wanting to access employment services in Toronto. (Those who speak French can also take advantage of French-language employment service agencies, such as Centre Francophone and Services d'emploi Boréal.) You must have at least intermediate language skills, which you can often obtain through Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) classes, offered by the Toronto District School Board or other community organizations. You can also go to a YMCA Newcomer Information Centre, which provides informa-tion about jobs and settlement services. These centres also offer language assessment.
Newcomer Employment Services AgenciesIf you have good language skills and some job search-ing knowledge, several agencies have programs that can help you to nd suitable work. These programs, which mostly run full-time during the day, can give you an overview of the employment landscape in your eld and help you prepare a solid resumé, cover letter, and thank-you (for the interview) letter. Some agencies also provide mentoring or a work experience placement. Here are some of the agencies that deliver programs geared to skilled newcomers:• ACCES Employment Services has programs specifi -
cally for engineers and nance and information tech-nology (IT) professionals. It also offers a Talk English Café and speed mentoring events.
• Skills for Change provides a host of programs and services for newcomers including programs geared towards doctors, engineers and teachers.
• WoodGreen Immigrant Services offers a number of programs including a Bridging Program for Internationally Trained Individuals. This program is designed for those in the nancial services, IT, engi-neering, health care, sales, and social services/com-munity work elds.
• Seneca College's Faculty of Workforce Skills Development offers Specialized Services for Skilled Immigrants including the Bridging to Green Careers Program, designed to help internationally trained immigrants succeed in Canada's environmental sec-tor.
• Community MicroSkills Development Centre provides settlement, employment, and self-employment ser-vices to a range of client groups including immi-grants.
• JVS Toronto delivers Canadian workplace communi-cation programs as well as a job search workshop geared to unemployed newcomers.
• JobStart also has programs for newcomers. You can also contact Employment Ontario at 1-800-387-5656 to nd out about other employment services agencies that can help you with your job search.SkillsInternational.caThe SkillsInternational.ca program links pre-screened internationally educated professionals with employers who need their skills. The project works with agencies who prepare newcomers for employment. As persons are deemed job-ready, they are referred to Skills International to create a searchable pro le. When employers create postings, the system searches and matches the candidates who are the best t from the
database of more than 4,000 job searchers. Skills International is the only site of its kind in Canada that helps internationally trained professionals to better mar-ket themselves to employers. As well, many employ-ment agencies linked with Skills International can offer clients access to their Perfect Interview program -- a helpful self-paced online tutorial on rehearsing, master-ing and reviewing interview skills with the help of a webcam (equipment at Skills International partner agencies).Gaining Canadian ExperienceThere are also a number of bridge training programs, like the ones offered by Woodgreen and Seneca, to help newcomers in regulated trades and professions gain experience. Finding a mentor is a great way for newcomers to have someone in their eld show them the ropes and intro-duce them to a professional network -- an invaluable resource for job seekers. For more on mentoring, read the Easing the Transition to the Canadian Workplace article. As well, our No Experience? No Credentials? No Problem! article discusses practice rms and intern-ship programs, two other ways that newcomers can expand their network as well as obtain desirable Canadian experience.A third way to gain experience, get references and increase your network is to volunteer. One of the most common mistakes people make when volunteering is to passively "wait for a job to nd them." When volunteer-ing, it is critical for you to set speci c goals that you seek to actively achieve, both to post on your resumé and to earn written references as well as online recom-mendations from your co-workers, supervisor, and cli-ents on LinkedIn and Branchout, Facebook's profes-sional pro le.Network or networking is mentioned throughout the preceding two paragraphs. That's because it is consid-ered one of the most effective methods of nding work, a key way to gain con dence and direction, and to hear about jobs before they are advertised. For networking purposes, it's a good idea to join an association in your eld as well as to volunteer or do an internship.

By Alix Matthews-MahéMedia Communications Coordinator, Ontario Association of Career Colleges
Every year, over 60,000 students choose to pursue post-secondary educa-tion at one of Ontario’s career colleges. Career colleges offer hands-on learning in a variety of skilled fields, often in just a matter of months. But, with over 600 campus locations dotted across the province, how do you decide which one is the best fit for you?
The following is a list of 5 essential tips on choosing a career college: 1. Do your researchFind a college in your area or one that offers the program you’re looking for. Once you’ve narrowed down your options, you can go to www.ontario.ca/pcc to make sure the colleges you’re looking at are registered with the ministry. Also, check into professional associations, such as the Ontario Association of Career Colleges, to see if the colleges are members in good standing.
2. Book a tourVisiting a career college is often the best way to get a feel for the school. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to talk to teachers and stu-dents, check out the classrooms and equipment, and picture yourself as a student there.
3. Ask questionsTry talking to current students, alumni, instructors, and employers, and ask them as many questions as you can. Colleges can often put you in touch with graduates and businesses that have hired their students, so that you can hear about their experiences with the college first-hand.
4. Compare and contrastWhether you walk into a college and its love at first sight or if you aren’t quite sure if it’s the right one yet, it’s always a good idea to compare. By booking a tour at another college and comparing student experiences from several campuses, you should get a good idea of what college and learning environment works best for you.
5. Look into funding optionsCareer college students use a variety of funding options including personal funds, Second Career funding, WSIB funding, and OSAP. If you require OSAP funding, make sure the college is OSAP designated. If not, speak to a representative at the college to see what other options are available.
Established in 1973, the Ontario Association of Career Colleges is a provincial voice for career colleges. OACC has over 280 members who
contribute to the province’s economy by training a majority of the 60,000 students who enroll in career colleges annually in hundreds of
essential, skilled fields.
Visit our website at www.oacc.ca or find us on Facebook and Twitter.

An education is something no one can ever take away from you. That’s why Everest’s curriculum and approach to career training is focused on helping students accomplish their goals of finding new careers they’ll truly enjoy.
The business, technology and health care programs offered at the Ottawa East and Ottawa West campuses prove you don’t need four years to complete an education that can help you move forward in your career. Many of their programs can be completed in less than year!
Here are three main factors that help students succeed at Everest College:
1.) Quality of training. Everest prepares their students to stand out from the crowd by equip-ping them to handle challenges they may face in their future careers. They accomplish this by offering their students a strong foundation of knowledge and the programs are designed to increase the ability to learn quickly and gain a strong understanding of what’s expected in real-world environments.
2.) Experienced instructors. Student development depends on qualified faculty. Everest recruits qualified professionals who have real-world experience in the area they teach. You get to learn from people who have stories to tell and unique perspectives to share.
3.) Strong student support. The moment you contact Everest College, you will be greeted with open arms by a career services representative who can help you choose the right program and hit the ground running. When you graduate, they can help you prepare your resume and sharpen your interviewing skills. And they will be excited to help you look for your perfect career opportunity!
Of course, there are many other reasons why Everest students succeed, such as program schedules that are designed for working professionals and financial aid options available for those who qualify. Students who need to balance their current responsibilities with training for a better future can feel at home at Everest!

American actress Mae West is quoted as saying, “The best way to behave is to misbehave.” That may “The best way to behave is to misbehave.” That may have worked for Mae West, but it won’t work on the have worked for Mae West, but it won’t work on the job. Most companies want behaviour that inspires job. Most companies want behaviour that inspires productivity, performance, and, of course, profit.productivity, performance, and, of course, profit.
Defined as observable activity in people and Defined as observable activity in people and animals, behaviour can be broken into five categories:animals, behaviour can be broken into five categories:
1. Behaviour is observable.1. Behaviour is observable. An employee comes An employee comes in late, doesn’t complete assigned tasks and takes in late, doesn’t complete assigned tasks and takes every opportunity to enjoy a break. As a manager, you every opportunity to enjoy a break. As a manager, you observe these behaviours and probably get ticked off. observe these behaviours and probably get ticked off. Your emotions get you grumbling, making comments Your emotions get you grumbling, making comments to stimulate a change and adding stress to your life.to stimulate a change and adding stress to your life.
But do you take action? Wait. Don’t let your But do you take action? Wait. Don’t let your emotions rule. Instead, observe these behaviours and emotions rule. Instead, observe these behaviours and put a plan in place to find out why the employee is acting this way. There may be a logical reason.
2. Behaviour is situation-based and can vary from one situation to the next. The person who is a star employee in one situation can be dead weight in another. If someone’s performance varies that much, you need to stop and assess the situation to determine what causes the variance.
Does the new task require a giant performance leap? Have you truly given adequate and proper direction? Have you allowed the opportunity to ask questions?3. Behaviour can be flexible, even within a single situation. You give an employee a task and feel he’s on the right path, then you notice things aren’t getting done. Flexible behaviour can indicate a variety of things, including lack of knowledge, lack of motivation, reluctance to change, or other problems that require further investigation.
4. Behaviour is dynamic and always changing. While psychologists may say behaviour patterns are set at a very young age, we continue to change and adjust our behaviour throughout our lives. Family situations, financial crises, physical or mental challenges and something as simple as boredom all affect our behaviour.
Is the once-dynamic employee bored with her job? How about your fantastic team leader? Have you made changes that are negatively affecting his performance?
5. Our behaviour is based on our thoughts and beliefs. Pause for a moment and think back to when you were a teenager. Do you have the same beliefs today? Probably not, particularly if you’re the owner of the business, and you’re trying to motivate your employees to have the same degree of enthusiasm you have. Could anyone but you motivate you when you were a teenager? No. You were motivated when someone inspired you to complete a task or take on a new job.
As a leader, your job is to inspire employees so they have the same vested interest in doing a great job and moving the company forward as you do.Leader, heal thyself first
When you look at these five categories, remember, as the leader, when inappropriate behaviour gets in the way, you own part of the problem. It may be only five percent, but it’s a part. When you tackle behaviour issues, recognize your contribution and deal with it first.
Did you communicate what you wanted clearly? Did you wait to respond to questions for clarification? Are your procedures clear and still appropriate for the changing work environment? Are you an absent leader?
The admonition lead by example is as old as time, but it’s still true. Discover the problem, keep your emotions in check and put a plan in place. Your people need to see you and hear you. Your behaviour has to match what you’re expecting of others.Attitude has many meanings
Make sure you define the problem behaviour correctly. Have you ever grumbled about an employee having a poor attitude? Attitude is an umbrella word. It’s not behaviour. It has many meanings, depending on who’s using the word.
To you, attitude means the employee doesn’t care about his work; to your customer, it means she receives slow service at the counter; and to your employee, it means no one seems to care what he does. In the employee’s mind, the boss’s attitude needs work. Who looks at your behaviour and asks for corrections?
