CHIRO

Page 2: Ouderbrochure Engels

““HEY, YOU!”

In Chiro we come together to play and spend a great afternoon together. Every week our leaders prepare all kinds of playful activities like playing hide-and-seek and tag games, going on an ex-pedition in the neighbourhood, playing football, going to a park, or just relaxing with friends of your age. Everyone’s welcome to join the Chiro.

You just have to be 6 years old. You don’t have to do any crazy tricks or be someone special. We believe that everybody is special and we respect everyone for who they are. The more you come, the more friends you are probably going to make. We also invite you, as a parent, to come and visit us and send your children to the Chiro.

IN ALMOST EVERY VILLAGE OR CITY YOU CAN FIND A CHIRO GROUP. There are a 1000 local groups in total! We want to get you to know them better.

x We advise every child to wear clothes that can get dirty. Every group decides for themselves which clothing is required. Most groups just ask you to wear a common T-shirt or sweater.

x In some groups girls and boys play together, in other groups they have their activities apart from each other.

x In summer all groups go on a summer camp. Together with your friends, you go on a 5 day trip (or longer). A cooking team makes sure that everyone gets healthy food.

x In most groups there are adjusted menu’s for vegetarians, and if necessary they will cook halal or gluten-free.

If you have questions of comments, you just ask the team of leaders of your local group and together you will proba-bly find a solution.

Ik weet niet goed wat de

Chiro is, maar je komt ze

wel soms tegen op straat.

Ze hebben Chirokleren aan

en zijn altijd in grote groep.

SPEELCLUBRAKWIEvery age is different. That’s why we gather in peer

groups: the sections. In approximately one third of the groups, the sections are mixed-gender. Children of six years and older are welcome in Chiro, because we believe that children can enjoy group life only after that age.

z The youngest are welcome in the ribbels (6-8 year).Together with their leaders, they dive into the phantasy world of forest bears and chocolate princes, play pup-pet shows or disguise as witches.

z From 8- to 10-year-olds you are expected at the speelclub to go on an expedition to the park. They make little artworks and play toge- ther in group.

z The 10- to 12-year-olds are ex-pected in the rakwi section: they fool around, or createthe craziest figures with clay. They’re mostly exhausted from

running around, they go on a bike tour or burn their heels in giant forest games.

z The titos (12-14 years old) go on day trips by bike, or travel to the next town for a huge search game. They also prepare a meal in their Tito Restaurant, which is tasted (and tested) by the leaders. Open field games are their favourite, especially when strategy is needed..

z The ketis (14-16 years old) are looking for adven-tures, go on two-day nature hikes with backpack and compass, or build a float and go for a ride on a canal. They get exhausted in an invented sport, or re-arrange their group room.

Page 5: Ouderbrochure Engels

z The aspirants (16-18 years old) enjoy their time together and switch between rough games and deep talks in the cosiest corner of their room. At certain times they pitch in with the leadership of a younger section and test their ability to become leaders them-selves.

Local groups are autonomous and are gui-ded by youths (17 years and older), who form the leadership team. Usually this team meets weekly to determine the right course of thelocal group. The group leader(s) is (are) respon-sible for the coordination.Decisions are made by the leadership team. In many cases these youngsters are being suppor-ted by an adult who helps the leaders make the

right decisions. In addition the leaders are encou-raged to take part in special courses organized by the Chiro secretariat. In these courses they get acquainted with safety measures, working in peer groups, first aid, etcetera.

Chiro is samen zijn met mijn vrienden en ons gewoon amuseren. En niet te veel aan school moeten denken. En ambetant doen tegen de leiding. Maar we zien ze

wel graag!

WHAT DOES CHIRO COST?Enrolment Fee

A large part of the enrolment fee is used to buy playing material for activities. The other part is used for insurance for your child. Your child has insurance during all the activities and on its way to and back from the Chiro.

What does this insurance cover?

x Civil liability insuranceYour child runs into a care and makes a scratch. During a ball game your child smashes a window. If your private liability insurance doesn’t cover the damage, the insurance of the Chiro will. Something happens because the leaders haven’t paid attention? Insurance covers all the costs.

x An accidentYour child dislocates its foot during one of the activities or gets cut in one of its fingers. Then the insurance of the Chiro will cover the costs which aren’t paid back by the national health service. In a worst case scenario, when someone ends up permanently disabled or even dead, the Chiro insurance will give a fix retribution.

x Material damage: not!Personal belongings (backpack, cell phone, glasses, bicycle,…) aren’t covered by the insurance.

What do you wear?

Just like in a football team we choose to wear the same clothes when we come and play together as Chiro. That way we want to show that we are all part of the same group. In addition it makes the children more recognizable for the leaders. But not all groups expect the same and in many groups just a T-shirt or a sweater the group made is sufficient. In many groups, costs for Chiro clothing are mostly kept low through all kinds of special payment systems. Just ask the group leaders what is necessary and how to by the right clothes.

You can by our Chiro clothing at the Banier, our own Chiro shop.

Financial support?

The enrolment fee and other costs vary from group to group, because each of them can decide for themselves how they organise themselves. Just ask the leaders how much it costs, but don’t let the numbers hold you back.

There are many agencies in Flanders and in the Chiro that can help you cope with these costs. Some of these agencies are:

x National health servicex OCMWx The solidarity fund of the Chirox Fiscal certificatesx The youth service of your city or village

Just call or email the national secretariat of the Chiro for more information.

De Chiro is heel leuk,

want dan mogen we ons

vuil maken. En onze

leidsters en leiders

doen altijd zot!

Fien, Chirolid, 7 jaar
