Through these parables, Jesus asks us, “Do we perceive God and His kingdom in the same way? Do we really see it as a treasure that is worth more than everything we value in life? Jesus reminds us that the kingdom of God is worth everything we have. Our money, our time, our energy and everything. That’s quite a statement. If Jesus is our REAL TREASURE, we untiringly search for Him and spend time with Him to discover the riches hidden in him. Sunday Reflection: Christ, Our Treasure

Two men in the Gospel of today perceive the true value of their treasures. The first one is a farm worker. He stumbles on a great treasure in a field – most probably a jar full of money and valuables. He is smart. The first thing he does is, to bury the treasure again. Then goes home and sells everything he owns to buy the field.

Why does he do this? In ancient times, Palestinians buried their treasures - like money and jewelry - in their fields in order to protect them from foreign invaders and thieves. Sometimes, unclaimed and forgotten, the hidden treasures were found by lucky finders. The Palestinian laws of that time did not entitle the finder to possess it unless he also owned the property in which it was found. Knowing the real value of the treasure, the farm worker was ready to pay the cost for possessing the land in order to enjoy the treasure.

The second person Jesus speaks about in today’s gospel is: a wealthy pearl merchant. Unlike the farm worker, the merchant did not find his pearl by chance. But he discovers it after a long search and made tremendous sacrifices to get it.

Both the men in today’s parable have something in common: It is their total commitment to hunt for the treasure and their willingness to pay the price for it.

Free Documentary Viewing: Angst Families with children ages ten and up are invited to register now for the online screening of the documentary Angst at 7:00 PM on August 25. This event will feature a viewing of the 56-minute film, followed by an informative panel discussion led by experts in the children’s mental health field. While the film is free, there are only 1,000 viewing tickets. Registration is required.

Through candid interviews, the makers of Angst tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships. The film also includes a special interview with Michael Phelps, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all-time. While Angst documents the struggles some people have with anxiety, it also reveals their hope for the future. Noah, a teenager in the film, describes it this way: “Anxiety doesn’t define me. It’s not just a curse; it also gives me strength.” This screening is made possible through the financial support of NAMI Dakota County, NAMI Hennepin County, NAMI Ramsey County, NAMI Washington County, and NAMI Minnesota. For more information, please email [email protected].

Prayer for World Health Almighty and ever loving God, Creator of all things,

in you we place our trust for guidance during this Coronavirus pandemic.

Hear the prayers we offer for our elderly and those with chronic health conditions,

who are most vulnerable. Let their faith and trust in you never weaken.

Allow your heavenly knowledge to direct our medical professionals and researchers

to find a solution for this sickness.

Bless, with your divine protection the doctors, nurses and first responders

and surround them with your love.

Guide those in authority, Lord. By the wisdom of our leaders, and public health officials,

along with the integrity of our citizens, may harmony be restored.

Look with favor on the families who mourn those who have died from this illness.

Comfort them in their loss. Console them in the hope that all who trust in you,

will find peace and rest in your eternal kingdom.

Calm this terror that threatens us. Protect our families, neighbors and friends

and restrain our fears and anxiety. Grand that good health may reign throughout the world.

Amen.
