ARCHDIOCESAN NEWS

Email Fraud Warning

The Archdiocese has received multiple reports from parishioners and priests who have fallen victim to a recent Internet email phishing scam. Imposters, posing as priests and using email addresses that are similar to those of our priests, have been emailing people asking for personal donations, gift cards, and other forms of financial assistance. Never respond to emails requesting Google Play cards, iTunes cards, or any other form of personal financial assistance, even if it appears to be from a priest, deacon, religious, parish staff or Archbishop Miller. If you have any doubt, please contact the sender by other means to verify any requests. See the B.C. Catholic story at www.bccatholic.ca/phishing...

Marian Devotions for Peace & Justice in Hong Kong

Join us to ask for the intercession of the Holy Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary that the Lord would pour his grace and peace upon Hong Kong and grant its people his justice and mercy. We shall pray one of the most ancient services in the Church (Byzantine Tradition): the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, written by St. Roman the Sweet-Singer. “To Thee, the Champion Leader, we Thy servants dedicate a feast of victory and of thanksgiving as ones rescued out of sufferings, O Theotokos: but as Thou art one with might which is invincible, from all dangers that can be do Thou deliver us, that we may cry to Thee: Rejoice, O Unwedded Bride!” Thursday, October 24, 7 pm - 8 pm at Eastern Catholic Church in Richmond.

All Saints' Day Mass

Join Gardens of Gethsemani for the 2nd day of the Hallowtide Triduum – for our All Saints’ Day Mass at 6:30 pm in our Evangelist Chapel on Friday, November 1. Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Miller.

All Souls' Day Mass

Join Gardens of Gethsemani for the 3rd day of the Hallowtide Triduum, as we celebrate All Souls’ Day Mass in the Evangelist chapel at the Gardens of Gethsemani at 6:30 pm, Saturday, November 2.

Pro-Life Mass and Prayer Vigil

One of the fundamental answers to abortion is prayer. Please join your voice with ours as we pray on the first Saturday of each month at a different parish for a new culture of life. Mass will be Saturday, November 2, 8:30 am at St. Francis Xavier Church in Vancouver. For upcoming dates, visit www.rcav.org/pro-life-mass-and-prayer-vigil

Michael Miller, CSB, of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver. Sunday, November 3, at 3 pm at St. Clare's Church in Coquitlam. Light refreshments will follow.

Stewardship Reflections

“…proclaim the word, be persistent whether it is

convenient or inconvenient...” (2 Timothy 4:2)

It is not always convenient to be a good steward, especially when all the temptations of our busy and materialistic world get in the way. Now add our own

pride and ego into the equation and living a stewardship lifestyle may be downright

uncomfortable! Remember, God didn’t call us to be comfortable. He called us to be faithful.

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

I hope that parishioners will consider prayerfully, and seriously consider, supporting the Fundraiser for the New

School and Parish Center that will be celebrated near my 60th birthday. This is such a huge event in the life of our parish.

Once construction begins people will be amazed (for a lack of better words) at the size of this new facility that will

educate your children for generations to come, both for those who attend the school and those who attend our PREP. Our

new parish all will also be a wonderful place to gather as a parish family. This building is costing 24.5 million dollars and

we are 7 million short. I firmly believe that we can, here at Corpus Christi, manage this debt, but it will take a stewardship

mentality and commitment to meet this challenge. Prayerfully consider buying a ticket and coming out to the dinner.

Tickets are on sale after the Masses, or you can also purchase tickets through the parish office.

I believe it to be very important to reiterate my note about the reception of the Holy Eucharist. We, as Catholics,

must take the utmost care in the way in which we receive Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Only practicing

Catholics may receive the Eucharist, which means Catholics who attend Mass faithfully each Sunday and who are free of

mortal sin. Once you are at the Communion, or Altar, Rail you either kneel or stand. The Norm of the Church is too

receive Holy Communion on the tongue, but the Church permits Holy Communion to be received on the hand. If a person

is standing or kneeling and they receive Holy Communion on the hand they must, not should, but must, put Communion

into their mouths, either before they get up from the Rail, or before they turn and walk back to their pews. There is no

reason or excuse for walking away from the Rail with the sacred host in your hand - no excuse. As Jesus in the Blessed

Sacrament is so central to our belief, I will continue to remind, teach and exhort for the proper reception of the Eucharist. I

am mentioning this because in the past couple of months I am hearing that people are receiving who should not be

receiving. I am also seeing too many people either walk away with the Sacred Host in their hand then putting the host into

their mouths, or getting up from the rail and putting the host in their mouths, or while walking away. There is no (zero,

nada), reason for this, so please receive with the utmost reverence and love for Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

As I mentioned last week, it is so important for us who are children of God, to give thanks to God for his

countless blessings. After receiving Holy Communion be intentional (consciously and in a focused way), and make that

time one of thanksgiving to Jesus for the incredible gift that you have just received. There are vocal prayers that you could

pray, or just pray from your heart, thanking the King for being in your heart, soul and body.

It is good to see many parishioners wearing their Name Tags every Sunday! I think, and hope that it makes the

parish a “little smaller” in the sense that we can at least know each other’s first names now. I know it helps me, but I hope

that it helps you as well? There are still many parishioners who do not have Name Tags. I would encourage you to get one

and begin wearing it. For those who do wear one, kindly ensure that you name is facing outwards, the “cards” easily flip

to the backside which is blank.

Remember to Vote tomorrow, it is really important that we exercise our democratic right to vote. If you do not

vote you have no right to complain about the state of our nation. Vote for the candidate that you believe will protect

proper values, respecting life from conception till natural death, and marriage as between a man and a woman.

Remember this present government refused to give any organization summer job grant money unless it agreed

with pro-abortion (pro-death) policies. It is arrogant and disgusting that our Prime Minister would do this AND to

be clear this is not a political statement, it is a moral statement, no more and no less. I would say it not matter who

is in government.

United under the power of the Rosary

Policy on Requests for Mass Intentions for Corpus Christi

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the center and root of the Christian life. It is offered for the living and the dead as the supreme way of giving worship to God and also asking for His grace and favour for some matter in this world or for the soul of departed loved ones. Here at Corpus Christi there is a great devotion for the Mass and many requests for the Mass to be offered for a specific intention with a stipend. Church Law specifies that only 1 Mass stipend can be accepted per Mass; the Priest prays in a special way for the intention as well as for the Universal Church. He may also include other intentions in his prayer though he may not name them. (For example, someone may come to the sacristy at the last moment asking the priest to offer the Mass for a family who has been in an accident or is about to have surgery that day. The priest does not change the original intention of the Mass, but, he can include this new emergency intention in his Mass).

Inasmuch as the request for Mass Intentions have considerably increased over the years since the implementation of this policy in 2013 and in order to be fair about the booking of Masses for anniversaries and special dates etc., I want to establish the following revised policies. The intention here is to be as fair as possible to the many parishioners who request Mass.

1) Requests for Mass Intentions will now be on a month to month basis – meaning, beginning January 2020, we will only accept requests for January; intentions for February will be accepted in February, and so on. As in the past, ALL MASS REQUESTS WILL BE ON A FIRST COME – FIRST SERVED BASIS.

2) We will accept three (3) intentions per family per year (1 Sunday or Saturday evening Mass and 2 weekday Masses) to be celebrated in Corpus Christ Church. This will also apply to any parish group wishing to offer a Mass for their specific intention. If a larger number of Masses are requested, we will send them to priests in need here in the Archdiocese or to priests in the Missions. Our retired priests as well as poor missionaries are very grateful for a daily Mass stipend.

3) In order to be fair and to take information accurately, all requests for Masses must be done in person at the parish office and the stipend for the Mass should be given at that time. There will be no more phone-in or email requests. Alternatively – if you wish to request a Mass without a specific date you may write your request with the intention and the stipend and place it in a separate envelope (not your weekly donation envelope) and drop it off in the Sunday collection marked clearly Mass Request. The ordinary offering for a Mass is $10. Mass cards are available at $1.00 each.

4) Due to the large number of requests received for Sunday Masses, it has become necessary to limit 1 Sunday or Saturday evening Mass request per family per year. This is to give a fair and equal opportunity to others also wishing to have a Sunday Mass offered for their loved one. We will also try to accommodate your requested Sunday Mass time, however, please note that the Pastor is obligated to offer 1 Sunday Mass for all the people of his parish (Missa Pro Populo). Due to this, scheduling of Sunday Masses will depend on the time of the Pro Populo Mass.

5) Special Mass requests on the occasion or at the time of the death of a family member who did not live here will need to be worked out with one of the priests and will only be done at the Friday evening Mass. If there are no such special Mass requests on a particular Friday, then the evening’s Mass will not be booked but will be left open for the intentions of the priest or for fulfilling the Holy Souls Masses.

We hope that this policy will give you, our dear parishioners, a fair opportunity to have Masses offered for your intentions in this Church or by other priests as speedily as possible.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Hamilton October 8, 2019

8 Ways to grow closer to your family this fall

“Make the most of those shorter days with these family-oriented activities. Little ones love crunching all those fallen leaves, while older children can gather a huge collection for many possi-ble craft ideas. From painting leaves to making leaf collages, this is an activity that will keep you all busy, while providing your home with a bit if homemade autumnal decoration. Here are 8 things to do with big and little ones to make this season a blessing for all the family.

1) Leaves,...and more leaves Little ones love crunching all those fallen leaves, while older chil-dren can gather a huge collection for many possible craft ideas. From painting leaves to making leaf collages, this is an activity that will keep you all busy, while also providing your home with a bit of homemade autumnal decoration.

2) Gardening With all the leaves lying around, you might want to spend a day in the yard encouraging kids to gather them while you clear away all those dying plants. It’s an ideal moment to talk to your children about the life cycles as they gather up the dead foliage—but be sure to bring the hope of new life by planting a few bulbs for spring.

3) Build a bonfire There’s something so comforting about sitting around a bonfire with family members. Take this special moment to sing, chat, and of course, make the occasional smore! For those with children who like all things gory, you could even talk about those brave saints who were burned at the stake for their faith.

4) Prepare for the holidays Fall is about anticipation, the excitement of preparing for Thanksgiving and the beginning of Advent. Arrange a holiday family conference, where every-body offers up their ideas as to how to make these occasions special for you all. From making up gratitude books, to creating holiday menus, it’s a time to talk about the true blessing of family life.

5) Family Fun Run There are often a few fun runs at this time of the year. For those who like to be active, sign up for a joint family fun run that will not only help keep you all fit, but will encourage you to inspire and mo-tivate each other. For any future Olympians, you might even get to bring a trophy home!

6) The indoor tent If it’s pouring with rain and the kids are stuck at home, get some bed sheets—the bigger, the better—and build yourselves a lounge tent. Fill it with cushions and books, climb in and enjoy an afternoon of sto-ries, cuddles and laughter.

7) Get Cooking Again, if you’re more housebound than usual, take the time with your kids to make cookies, cupcakes, or other tasty treats and de-liver them to elderly neighbours. It’s a time of year that can be depressing for seniors, so a friendly visit is something that will surely lift their spirits.

8) Get Hiking Although it’s an activity for every time of year, there’s something reas-suring about wrapping up in warm clothes and stepping outside to-gether. Encourage your children to marvel at God’s creation as you examine the beautiful russets and shapes of the changing nature around you
