From the Desk of the Pastor May 27, 2018Are You a Disciple of Jesus?

Most Holy Trinity Sunday

Next Week: Corpus Christi Sunday1st Reading: Exodus 24:3-8

2nd Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26

First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40In this passage, Moses pointed out to the Israelites the great deference they had received: they had heard the voice of God, seen His manifestations in signs and won-ders, and lived to tell of it! Having witnessed His power and might, they must be careful to keep His command-ments and pass everything they knew on to their children.

Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20This passage marks the end of the Gospel of St. Matthew. Here, Jesus instructed His disciples to spread the Good News and to Baptize people in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. And He gave his promise that He would be with them always.

Second Reading: Romans 8:14-17Because we have the Holy Spirit working in us and through us, our relationship with God has been elevat-ed: we are no longer slaves but adopted children of God. Like Jesus Himself, we are heirs to suffering and to glory.

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people

and build community within and without our parish.

In her book, Forming Intentional Disciples: the Path to Knowing and Following Jesus, author Sherry A. Weddell shares some disturbing statistics about Catholics. According to a recent study by the Pew Foundation: Only 30 % of Americans raised Catholic are still “practicing” (which in the survey meant “attending Mass at least once a month”). Another 38% hang on to the Catholic label – they are cultural Catholics, but seldom or never attend Mass. The other 32% no longer consider themselves Catholic: of these, 3% follow a non-Christian religion, 14% con-sider themselves “unaffiliated,” and 15% have joined a Protestant faith community. But perhaps even more troubling still is her discovery, after working with hundreds of parishes and interviewing a couple thousand practicing Catholics, most of whom are heavily involved in their parishes, that many of these Catho-lics have tremendous gaps in their understanding of the faith. They might be in Church every Sunday. They might be ushers, lectors, parish secretaries, religious Ed teachers, and so on; but Weddell discovered many who, for example, don’t believe in the divinity of Jesus. There were many who never quite got the whole thing about Jesus being really present in the Eucharist, in the consecrated host. She even found some who admitted that they don’t even believe in a personal God!What she also discovered, too commonly, is that many of our “practicing Catholics” lack the very notion of “being a disciple of Jesus” or of “having a personal relationship with Jesus.” In other words, far too many of our brothers and sisters, who might come regularly and faithfully to Mass every Sunday, do not understand themselves to be disciples of Jesus: the continuation of that first community of believers who followed Jesus on the roads of Nazareth and who became the first generation of Christians. But that is precisely who we are as Catholics: disciples of Jesus. If going to Mass on Sunday and “being Catholic” is not about being a disciple of Jesus and living as his follower and giving testimony to our faith in Jesus as Savior of the World in our words and actions and religious observance, then why are we going to Mass? Then why do we check off the “Catholic” box on a survey? We live in an age of the Church that desperately requires what Weddell calls “intentional disciples,” that is, Catholics who have longed for, prayed for, sought out, and been granted a very personal experience of Jesus in their lives, to which they respond with daily prayer, an active effort at daily conversion, the frequent use of the Sacraments - especially Confession - and a joyful way of life in which they strive to keep God at the center.Let’s pray that every member of our parish family can be granted that precious experience of faith and discipleship.

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.

143. Why do I see people eating and chewing in Church?I have also seen people leaving their cars with coffee, muffins or candies being eaten or drunk right up to the doors of the church. Another thing I am asked all the time is about seeing people chewing gum and even re-ceiving Holy Communion with gum in their mouths. Here are some reflections about the fast.By ancient tradition, Christians abstain from profane food prior to receiving the sacred food of the Eucharist. Until the pontificate of Pope Pius XII, the Eucharistic fast was from midnight. Pope Pius reduced it to three hours; and after Vatican II, Pope Paul VI reduced it to one hour. The current Code of Canon Law states:Canon 9191. One who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to

abstain from any food or drink, with the exception only of water and medicine, for at least the period of one hour before Holy Communion.

2. A priest who celebrates the Most Holy Eucharist two or three times on the same day may take something before the second or third celebration, even if the pe-riod of one hour does not intervene.

3. Those who are advanced in age, or who suffer from any infirmity, as well as those who take care of them, can receive the Most Holy Eucharist even if they have taken something during the previous hour.

The Eucharistic fast is before Holy Communion, not the Mass. It is a fast from food and drink; water is allowed, as is medicine. The moral theology tradition teaches that to be food something must be a) edible, b) taken by mouth, and c) swallowed. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner, candies, breath mints, lozenges and anything that is put into the mouth to be dissolved or chewed meets these conditions once the dissolved con-tents are swallowed. Chewing gum does not break the fast, but it is disrespectful of the Sacred Liturgy; and once the juice is swallowed the fast is broken. The tra-dition also teaches that the fast is strict: one hour, that is, 60 minutes. Given that until recently the fast was from midnight, this seems very little to ask of Catholics. The good Sisters taught us this rule of thumb: boys never cover their heads in church with a hat; you never chew anything or eat anything in church; and you fast from food and drink for one full hour. Let us teach our children and give good example - or refrain from re-ceiving Holy Communion.
