Welcome to Oxnard Adult School. The administration, faculty and staff are ready to help you achieve your academic and career goals. We have a selection of classes that were developed to as-sist those seeking a high school diploma, employment certification, advanced skills and for those desiring higher education.

For over 75 years, Oxnard Adult School has provided residents with many educational opportunities. Our programs offer support services to prepare you for college, entry level work or advanced training. Whether in academic or career training, we assist adult students in making an optimal transition to the workplace or higher education.

CLASS / TEXTBOOK REFUND POLICY NO refunds will be issued once a class begins.

NO refunds will be granted on fees paid for tests.

NO refunds will be issued for textbooks, unless Oxnard Adult School issues the wrong book.

A receipt must accompany all refund requests. No excep-tions.

Oxnard Adult School will refund registration fees for can-celled classes. Refunds may take 4 to 6 weeks to process.

There is a $20 non-refundable registration fee for all fee-

based classes.

Fees are non-transferable.

Adult Education Courses and Migrant Education

Preparación para el examen de equivalencia de preparatoria en español El curso de preparación para el examen de Equivalencia de Preparatoria se ofrece en dos localidades: Calle Segunda y Hueneme High School, en la mañana y la noche. Esta clase semestral está basada en un repaso general de matemáticas, lectura y redac-ción, estudios sociales y ciencias. Los estudiantes podrían necesitar más de un semestre para prepararse para tomar los exámenes. Hay dos niveles en esta clase: Pre HSE Sp (equivalente a los grados 6-8) y HSE Prep Sp (equivalente a los grados 9-

12). Adicionalmente se ofrece un taller opcional de matemáticas dos sábados al mes en el campus Calle Segunda. El estudiante debe tener un nivel de escolaridad mínimo de 5o grado para inscribirse en Pre HSE Sp y de 7o grado para inscribirse en HSE Prep Sp. High School Equivalency Exam Preparation Course - HSE Program

The High School Equivalency (HSE) Exam preparation course is free and helps prepare students for the two HSE exams offered at Oxnard Adult School, the GED and HiSET exams. Each participant studies in a lab setting with teacher support to gain the skills needed to pass the tests. The HSE online software provides assessment tools to help instructors provide student support in identi-fied problem areas. This is an open-entry program, students may register at any time during the regular school semester. The class has flexible hours which allows students to use the lab when it is most convenient for them. This class is FREE. Students may qualify for up to $75 in test vouchers after 20 hours of class time towards the HiSET exam only. .

High School Diploma - (HSD) Oxnard Adult School offers free individualized instruction for students wishing to obtain their high school diploma. The high school diploma program is an independent study program where students meet with their instructors once a week with set appointments and complete work at home or in our classroom setting. During their weekly meeting students turn in completed work, go over homework and completed subject area exams. Our classroom are open all day during class hours to provide students with a quiet place to do their work, get additional assistance from instructors or get tutoring in problem subject areas. Students usually work on one class at a time and work at their own pace. Textbooks can be purchased or borrowed with a deposit, at the school office for home use. This course offers continuous enrollment throughout the school year. Prospective students must bring all previous high school transcripts and meet with our counselors before getting started enrolled in the class.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) Adult Basic Education is a free non-credit basic reading, writing, spelling, and math instruction course. Instructor teach students at their individual skill level. This program helps students develop the basic educational foundation needed for the High School Diplo-ma or High School Equivalency programs. This is an English only class.

Migrant Education Program

English Second Language, High School Diploma and High School Equivalency students between 18 and 21 years of age, who work or whose family works in agriculture, the fishing industries or food packing industry may be eligible for educational assistance under the Migrant Program. The Migrant Program can assist students in paying for their educational materials. High school diplo-ma students can take some classes in Spanish through Cyber High. Students need to complete an application and interview pro-cess to be evaluated for program eligibility. For additional information, please contact Leticia Garcia at the Migrant Education office at (805) 436-8508 or come speak to her in person at the Second Street campus in room 2.

HSE Test Dates - GED and HiSET

High School Equivalency Test - HiSET®

The High School Equivalency Test (HiSET®) allows students to earn a California state issued High School Equivalency Certifi-cate. The HiSET® High School Equivalency Certificate is considered the equivalent of a High School Diploma and is recognized throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Most employers and Community Colleges accept this in place of a diploma. The fee for the HiSET is $130 which includes all 5 subject area tests. The 5 Subject areas include; Reading, Writing, Math, Sci-ence and Social Studies. The fee to retake a failed subject area test is $15. All testing fees must be paid at the Oxnard Adult School main campus in cash or credit card only. Registration: Examinees must be 18 years or older and not a high school graduate; must have a valid email address and a valid ID (CA Driver’s license or ID, military ID, passport or international government ID with current picture).

To schedule an exam, you must go online to create your profile. After you create your profile, print out the page with your HiSET ID number. Take the copy of the HiSET home page with the HiSET ID number and valid ID to Oxnard Adult School Office and register for

the HiSET Exam. Name on ID must be identical to the name on registration (excluding accents). If it doesn’t, you may not be allowed to test, or

your scores may be canceled after you take the test.

There are no refunds on test fees. There is a $5.00 certificate fee through parchment.com

General Education Development - GED®

The General Educational Development (GED®) exam has been used for over 65 years and is a national test designed to measure the skills and concepts normally learned during the four years of high school. The GED®

High School Equivalency Certificate is considered the equivalent of a High School Diploma and is recognized throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Most employers and Community Colleges accept this in place of a High School Diploma. The GED® test is 100% computer based exam and is offered in both English and Spanish. Examinees are tested on 4 subject areas: Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science. The examinee must score at least 145 on each subject area to pass. Subject area exam can be taken separately or together. Students with special needs can apply for accommodations in advance. Registration: Registration can only be done online for the GED® Exam with a cost of $140 for all 4 subject area exams. The ex-aminee must have an e-mail address and a major credit card to register. If the examinee does not have a credit card, they can purchase a voucher at the Oxnard Adult School office. Oxnard Adult School is an official Pearson VUE Test Center. The fee to retake a failed subject area exam is $15. Examinees must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid government issued photo ID. The fees may change. Adult Literacy Program- (Non Credit) This program is for anyone who wants to learn or improve their reading skills. Students work one-on-one with volunteer tutors. The class is offered in partnership with the Camarillo Public Library. If you know someone who wants to learn to read or if you would like to volun-teer to be a tutor, call the Literacy Center at 805-383-5689. Walk-ins always welcomed!

We have English classes in the morning and evening for all levels from beginning to advanced in several locations. Enrollment is open all year, but space is limited. Classes are FREE! Vocational English as a Second Language for Auto Technology (VESL Wheel)

This course integrates English language and literacy development with automotive skills. This is an entry level course that intro-duces students to three areas of the auto industry: auto service, auto body and auto paint. In this course students will gain hands-

on experience working with the major auto systems, which include cooling, engine, steering, suspension, transmission, electrical, and braking systems. They will also learn the fundamentals of structural repair and painting, and how to install, maintain, repair, and replace automotive parts. All students will have instruction in shop operations and procedures, including customer service.

This ESL Lab offers computer skills support for High School Equivalency, High School Diploma, and English as a Second Lan-guage all-levels students. Citizenship Program FREE CLASSES/CLASES GRATIS

This course introduces the prospective citizen to the history and government of the United States. The course helps prepare students with the knowledge needed to pass the citizenship exam and interview. Five-Week program continuous enrollment. Vocational English as a Second Language for Health Careers (VESL Health)

This class is an introductory course to prepare students for postsecondary education and employment in the health care industry. It is a multi-level Vocational ESL course and may be taken prior to or with concurrent enrollment in a health/medical class. Topics covered in this class include: Health care career pathways, occupation specific terminology and communication skills in the work-place. In addition, sentence structures, listening, speaking and reading language skill proficiencies will be further developed. Course content supports health career training for ESL students and preparation for entry level health care jobs.

Health and Medical Programs

Pharmacy Technician

Start a new career in the healthcare industry in just one semester! This 240-hour program consists of theory and clinical preparation for employment in a pharmaceutical setting. Topics include: medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmaceutical settings, duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician, phar-maceutical terms, abbreviations and symbols; metric and apothecary systems, record-keeping, dispensing prescriptions, and the manufacturing, packaging, and labeling of drug products. Successful course completion qualifies students to apply to the Califor-nia Board of Pharmacy for a Registered Pharmacy Technician license. To enroll, a student must be 18 years of age or older; must have a US high school diploma or HSE certificate (GED or HiSET). Foreign high school diplomas are welcomed as long as they are translated into English by an accredited agency. Candidates must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Aide (HHA)*

This course prepares students for licensure as a Certified Nurse Assistant with classroom theory and clinical practice. Instructors teach the basic nursing skills and procedures for providing quality patient care at the bedside of acutely or chronically ill persons in a hospital, skilled care facility, or home setting. Nursing fundamentals and procedures, hygiene and infection control, patient com-fort, safety, and home health concepts are covered. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the CA State Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) competency exam. Exam consists of a written and skills tests. Students are responsible for the testing fee because it is not mandatory to take exam. Current fee is $100. This course also includes is a combined lecture/lab that teaches students the theory and clinical skills needed to work with clients in the home care setting. Emphasis is given to safe-ty principles and to methods for providing physical and emotional care and social support. Upon successful completion, a list of all candidates eligible for HHA certification is submitted to the Department of Public Health, Home Health Aide Certification. Prerequisites/Information- CNA entrance exam is required. The exam fee is $10 and must be paid at the office prior to testing. All students must have a valid government issued ID and Social Security card for Livescan and State Competency Exam. The names on both cards must match. All students must have current TB clearance, current immunizations, flu vaccine and physi-cal exam prior to clinical training. Students must be able to lift 50 pounds with good body mechanics. Students must have either an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers card, or a Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers CPR card valid for the duration of the course. Oxnard Adult School is not permitted to send students who have been convicted of a crime (other than a minor traffic violation) to CNA/HHA clinical sites unless they first obtain a clearance under California Law. All students will be Livescan finger-printed on the first day of class. Drug screening during the program may be required.

Medical Assistant – Administrative (Front Office)

This course provides students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary for successful entry into the front office position in a medical clinic, health care agency, or physician's office as a medical assistant. Administrative duties include welcoming patients, maintaining medical records, scheduling appointments, and bookkeeping. This course is an excellent intro-duction to medical administration, and is one in a series of classes required to take and pass the California Certified Medical Assistant exam. This is a hybrid course (classroom and online instruction). Prerequisite: Employment level English competency in written and verbal communication is required. Must be able to type 25 WPM or more. Free typing test available at OAS. Advanced level ESL and basic computer literacy skills are rec-ommended.

Medical Assistant – Clinical (Back Office)

This course provides students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary for a successful entry into the back office position in a medical clinic, health care agency, or physician's office as a medical assistant. Computer Business Application– Applicaciones Informáticas Empresariales

This is self paced bilingual Computer Business Applications class in a lab type setting. Students choose their focus are in any of the computer application that range from Keyboarding, Introduction to Computers, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The instructor will assist students in the application of choice. Once you have a solid foundation in one application you can move on to another application. Each subject is a separate course and depending on your skill level, may require more than one 8-week session to complete. Evening classes are bilingual English-Spanish.

This course is divided into four sections: Intro to Accounting, Accounting 1, Intro to QuickBooks, and QuickBooks 1. At these clas-ses, more than taking a software class, you will build skills you can use immediately. Learn to analyze, plan, record, and interpret financial information such as journals, worksheets, income statements, balance sheets, banking, and payroll. The QuickBooks course teaches you to create company files, work with customers and vendors; and work with inventory, payroll, time estimates, and time tracking; as well as customizing and integrating QuickBooks, and more. It is highly recommended that students take low-er level classes prior to registering for Accounting 1 and QuickBooks 1. The City of Oxnard City Corps has teamed up with Oxnard Adult School to provide young people the opportunity to earn money and work experience while they work towards attaining their High School Diploma or High School Equivalency. Students will be expected to attend classes at Oxnard Adult School on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. The City of Oxnard City Corps will be providing transportation to and from Oxnard Adult School. Together Oxnard Adult School and the City of Oxnard City Corps will help guide and mentor students to increase college and career aspirations. To be eligible you must be between the ages of 18-25 and be no more than 50 credits away from graduating.

The City of Oxnard City Corps program is designed to give youth between the ages of 18 to 25, entry level work experience. Youth will learn team based work experience and interpersonal skills, while serving their community. The City of Oxnard City Corps offers the following learning opportunities: Town keeping, community gardens, after school education, event logistics and multimedia. The participating youth gain self-confidence, job preparation and self-discovery as they gain valuable work and life experience. Youth perform jobs around the community at a pay rate of $13.56 an hour.

Intro to Networking

This course will cover the fundamentals of computer hardware and software and advanced concepts such as security, networking, and the responsibilities of an IT professional. Students who complete this course will be able to describe the internal components of a computer, assemble a computer system, install an operating system, and troubleshoot using system tools and diagnostic soft-ware. Students will also be able to connect to the internet and share resources in a networked environment. Topics include mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones and client-side virtualization. Expanded topics include the Microsoft windows operating system, security, networking, and troubleshooting. Hands-on lab activities are an essential element of the course.

Agricultural and Natural Resources

There will be a bus provided to transport students to and from the Career Education Center in Camarillo. The bus will be departing from OAS main office on Second Street Monday through Thursday evenings. Only OAS students registered in CEC classes will be allowed to use the bus. Bus schedule will be provided at the OAS front counter as soon as it becomes available.
