Brochure DescriptionUse Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to create a custom brochure and logo.

Programs UsedAdobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop

Date CompletedMarch 27, 2016

CourseComm 130-14 Visual Media, Jason Stucki

Objectives• Set up and align a two-sided, folded document in InDesign.

• Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.

• Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped

in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of

the image.• Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, including

headers, and subheaders.

• Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

ProcessUsing the pen tool, I drew some lines and shapes until the skeleton of the logo

came together. Once I had the outline of the logo complete, I fiddled around

with the Live Paint tool to color the individual sections. I

then came up with the company name and concept as well as the

colors to fit with the logo. Using InDesign, I began constructing

the brochure layout, then found photos on the Internet to place

throughout. I Photoshopped the backgrounds out of all the

images to ensure the colors matched the color scheme I chose.

I wrote original content and organized the two-fold layout

with a modern, fun, and professional look.

Logos DescriptionExperiment with colors and font choices to design three variations of a logo for an

organization or company.

Programs UsedAdobe Illustrator

Date CompletedFebruary 27, 2016

CourseComm 130-14 Visual Media, Jason Stucki

Objectives• Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image

that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.

• Perform market research by gathering opinions from at least ten people about which

logo appeals most to them.

• Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.

• Refine logo with variations for color.

ProcessI used Adobe Illustrator to test different font, color, and graphic combinations. After

creating several different variations, I asked close friends, my classmates, and my

business partner which logos they liked best. I finally narrowed it down to the black

and white versions of these three, which I then revised further with

different color combinations. These colors are the main colors used

on the company’s existing website, so I decided to stick to theexisting color scheme and use varying fonts and graphics to

convey meaning. The company seeks to attract a professional

audience and these sleek colors effectively convey

professionalism.

Event Ad DescriptionThe flier is an event advertisement I designed using only a scanned image

Programs UsedHP scanner, Microsoft Word, PDF2JPG.net

Date CompletedJanuary 30, 2016

CourseComm 130-14 Visual Media, Jason Stucki

Objectives• Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)

• Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

• Create a full-bleed design.

• Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.

• Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

ProcessThe event flier was designed to appeal to college-age students who are interested in

developing marketable skills. It was designed to be fun, lively and eye-catching. I found

the image of the girl with the thought bubble above her head, scanned it into my design

software, and designed the ad around it. This was a “low-budget” project, so I was asked to

use Microsoft Word instead of professional tools. I used the crop tool

to delete any dark space as a result of the scanning. I hid the visible

page number and heading text with white boxes. I used the color

picker function in Microsoft Word to match the blue and green

colors that were found in the image. I used the repeating

bubble pattern to stay consistent with the feel of the scanned

image and aligned each of my text boxes with the image.

Photodesign DescriptionDemonstrate photo editing skills. Design a full-bleed print layout by choosing a color

scheme based on an original photo.

Programs UsedAdobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Date CompletedFebruary 6, 2016

CourseComm 130-14 Visual Media, Jason Stucki

Objectives• Learn basic photography skills.

• Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors

into the layout.

• Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE

(non-destructive editing.)

• Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5x11 page layout.

• Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

• Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 0.125in. from all four sides.

ProcessI took this photo when hiking through antelope canyon and noticed the monochromatic

color scheme of the natural rocks. I used the pen tool to create curvy

shapes for the background of the poster, to match the asymmetrical

waves of the slot canyon. I used the eyedropper tool to pulldark to light brick hues from the image, highlighting the

monochromatic color scheme of the entire flier. I used tasteful

typography choices, implemented a drop shadow, and

strategically placed all elements on the page where I felt

they best contributed to the overall design of the flier.

DescriptionI designed a logo, matching business card, and stationary (letterhead) to match.

Programs UsedAdobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Date CompletedFebruary 27, 2016

CourseComm 130-14 Visual Media, Jason Stucki

Objectives• Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or

use previous designs. Don’t use photos or live trace.

• Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.

Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card

should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.

• Apply typography rules, keeping body copy small.

• Keep designs simple with light watermarks, drop shadows and plenty of white space.

• Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece.

Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.

ProcessI started the project by choosing an analogous color scheme. I then used Adobe

Illustrator’s to create the logo for a fake company called Prism Graphics.

I applied several color variations until I determined the red, yellow,

gold scheme would make it stand out the most, because it isnot what you expect. Once the logo was created, I designed the

business card, testing the color combinations and fonts to

use. I used Adobe InDesign to create the page layout for

the matching letterhead, copying various elements from

Illustrator into the InDesign program.

Flier Description Design a grayscale flier to promote an annual graduate leadership conference using the

FOCUS principles of design.

Programs UsedAdobe InDesign

Date CompletedJanuary 23, 2016

CourseComm 130-14 Visual Media, Jason Stucki

Objectives• Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

• Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

• Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in

InDesign intact.

ProcessMy first step was to gather all information, analyze the message, choose a target audience,

and create thumbnail sketches for the flier design. The flier is intended to inform

graduates about an upcoming opportunity to learn skills on leadership as they prepare

to enter the workforce or take on leadership positions. After I first sketched designs, I

chose one with triangular elements to create a focal point and provide visual interest. I

then digitized the flier in Adobe InDesign. I met with a class member

through Skype to perform a visual critique, and then edited and

refined further. I paid closer attention to my alignment, whitespace, and placement during my edits. I also simplified much of

the original design to make it less busy and easier to read.

Business Card DescriptionUse principles of typography to design a professional business card.

Programs UsedAdobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop

Date CompletedFebruary 15, 2016

CourseArt 230-02 Principles of Typography, Debra Funk

Objectives• Learn how to use typography in both a decorative and informative way.

• Use the letters of your name/initials as a creative design element.

• The information on the business card should be informative, organized, and

complete.

ProcessIn Adobe Illustrator, I created more than 30 thumbnails experimenting with different

variations of the business card design. I selected the top three most effective designs and

created 30 more thumbnail iterations, experimenting with typography and color choices.

I got feedback from my peers and my instructor and chose the three most effective

designs. I then found a business card mock-up template online. I downloaded the template

and used the smart object layer to add my business card design into the mock-up

template.

Web Page DescriptionBuild a simple web page using HTML and CSS to display a custom logo you created and

explain your design process.

Programs UsedSublime Text Editor, Photoshop

Date CompletedMarch 13, 2016

CourseComm 130-14 Visual Media, Jason Stucki

Objectives• Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

• Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a

target audience.

• Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. Include all required tags.

• Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. Customize the provided CSS provided to format

the HTML to complement the logo design.

• Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.

• Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch

margins for printing.

ProcessAfter writing the HTML code and inserting my logo design, I attached

the stylesheet using the “link rel=” tag and added the various design

elements to the CSS file. I used Photoshop to get the hex codes ofthe colors used in my logo, then implemented the colors in the

CSS file. I chose fonts that matched those used in my logo to

create consistency. *I edited this project to make the webpage

differ more than the sample html and css files I was given.

I changed the size of the logo and the color of the headings.*

Montage DescriptionCreate a spiritual photo montage using Adobe Photoshop.

Programs UsedAdobePhotoshop

Date CompletedFebruary 14, 2016

CourseComm 130-14 Visual Media, Jason Stucki

Objectives• Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message

• Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow

• Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks

• Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image

• Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements• Apply typography principles

• Select good quality images

ProcessI found the spiritual quote I wanted to build my message around, then selected images

from Adobe stock and Google searches. I started with a white background and added each

image to the background by creating a feathered selection of each individual image and

adding it to the Photoshop document. I resized the images

to utilize elements of good design (focal point, alignment, rule of

thirds, etc). I then cleaned up the blending by using a layer mask

and the brush tool to delete sections of the background of each

image. I played with the placement, opacity, and selections until

it felt right.
