  • Description This is a brochure I designed to be a comp card for Jourdan Whitehead of MSA Models in New York City.

Objectives Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images (at least four, not including the logo). One image should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders. Trim for a full bleed and printed in two sided color.

Process I began by creating a new logo for MSA Models in Photoshop. It is similar to the original, but on the original there is no color blocking, and the font is different. Next I cut out the background of one of Jourdans photographs so that she could be freestanding against the black background.

Next I moved to InDesign and created two pages, with a trifold layout on an 8.5x11 page , and added three columns on the two pages, for a trifold brochure. I added a black background. I then added the photos I wanted to use by placing them on the pages, and next I added text boxes, and filled them with placeholder text. Then I manipulated

my photos and text boxes to fit in a stylish design on the pages, leaving plenty of white space, using gestalt, and lining all images and text boxes with something.Next I added my original text, and added headings, separating them from the body text. I used line space style paragraphing. I used text wrap to wrap the text around Jourdans body. After my critiques, I realized I had too many images, so I had to cut a few of them, in order to maintain good balance, and create white space. I spent a lot of time reorganizing the text and photos to fit nicely in the brochure.

  • Description I designed a web page to showcase a personally created logo.

Objectives Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. Customize the Cascading Style Sheet provided in I-Learn to add page formatting that complements the logo design, by changing at least the following: The h1 text color & background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the background color, Font Families and add at least one css comment. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process Using TextWrangler I wrote the basic HTML portion of my code. Then I attached a pre-made CSS document to my code. Next I needed to get the colors from my logo to use on my web page. In Photoshop I found them using the eyedropper tool. I changed the fonts from the default fonts in the pre-made CSS document, and I added some backup fonts just in case the viewers browser does not have the fonts I have chosen. I made the background image by using a gradient fill in a rectangle shape in Photoshop. Then I added some of the fish I created when I designed my logo and stationary. I created the three text bubble images in Photoshop, and added them to the HTML as jpeg images. I used padding around images. I linked this website (leading to Project 6) to the bottom of the page.

  • Description To design three logos for the same company with three variations.

Objectives Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs.Use only the tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fab flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or auto live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting.). Gather opinions from at least ten outside sources about which logo appeals most to them.

Process For the top design I began with the ellipse tool to create the pad of the bear paw. I manipulated the edges using the direct selection tool. I also used the ellipse tool to do the toe paw prints, and the little circles (claw marks) above them. Then I just added the text and changed the text color for an analogous color scheme.

For the middle design I copied the top graphic of the bear foot, and filled it with a red shade. I added a circle and used a neutral tan to fill it, then made the stroke really huge, and colored it the green you see. I added a second stroke to the first stroke by clicking on the object, the selecting the Appearance palate, and adding a palate. I colored it a dark brown. Then I added a water filter to the palate, so it had a rough edged appearance. I used the pathfinder to add the text and I was done.

The third design I chose a cute font for the top line, and a more conservative for the bottom, using all caps and increased the tracking to match the upper text. I used the paintbrush tool to trace around a footprint image I found on the internet, the added it next to the text. Finally I changed the U to a brick color.

  • Description An original stationary with leaderhead.

Objectives Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. (Dont use photos or live trace in your new logo.) Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use your new logo to design two stationery items with consistent design. (Photos are okay on stationery.) Letterhead: 8.5 x 11 (full-bleed optional, but trim only .125) Business card: 3.5 x 2 (print above center on a vertical page) Apply typography rules keeping small copy. Learning to keep thing simple by having watermarks and drop shadows light and white space. Applying contact information: Include name, address, phone, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone #; No parentheses/ hyphens.

Process I created an 8.5 x 11 page and then duplicated my logo and added it to the stationary page. I duplicated the swoosh from the business card, and incorporated it into my heading. I also duplicated the text from the front of the card and added it to the letterhead. Next I added my contact information to the bottom right corner of my stationary. I was careful to leave a 1/2inch border around all my pages.

  • Description A full bleed event ad to promote a charity event using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Objectives Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together) Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process I scanned a Mothers Day card I received from one of my children. I really liked the flower images and wanted to incorporate them into my design. I used Word Publishing Layout to crop the flowers from my original scanned images. There were a few flower types that were positioned on the card so as to be incomplete. To create a complete flower with these images I duplicated them, then rotated one of the copies to fit perfectly over another. Then I grouped that

image. Next I removed the backgrounds of each of the different kinds of flowers I wanted to use with the Remove Background tool under the Format Pictures tab. I wanted a grassyeffect, so I added a rectangle shape and colored it a complimentary shade of green on the bottom third of the page. Next I used the Line and Scribble tools in the Lines and Connectors tab under the Shapes tool to add white lines to offset the green to mimic grass. I made these lines random thicknesses, and grouped several at a time to be able to duplicate them quickly. For a blue sky effect I created another rectangle shape and increased the size to fit the entire page, then filled it with blue. Next I wanted white cut-outs of my flower images to border the grass and sky. I duplicated one of my flower images and then used the Black and White 25% tool under the Recolor tab under Format Picture tab to make it completely white. Next I duplicated that white flower image several times, and even resized some of the duplications slightly. Next I arranged my graphics to the formation I liked. Then I added a banner from the Shapes button, from the Stars and Banners category. Lastly I added my text in boxes.

  • Description This was an assignment to demonstrate photography and editing skills, and incorporating color into a poster layout with original photo.

Objectives Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop. Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 inch (0.125) from all four sides.

Process First I chose the monochromatic color scheme. I really like clean colors and simplicity. I used the best photo from my last assignment of an apple blossom. After importing into photoshop I slightly increased the vibrance. For the poster I opened a new page 11x 8.5. For the first layer I added the photo, then duplicated that layer for safety. The third layer was the same photo duplicated, but I used the selection tool to cut out the blossom and deleted the background. I added the text, then the color swatches, and the swoosh. I wanted the swoosh to be between my two copies of the blossom, so I arranged it to go there. I then changed the layers of color and the image layers all to oil paint.

  • Description Incorporate my original logo in a business card design

Objectives Business card: 3.5 x 2 (print above center on a vertical page) Apply typography rules keeping small copy. Learning to keep thing simple by having watermarks and drop shadows light and white space. Applying contact information: Include name, address, phone, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone #; No parentheses/ hyphens.

Process In Illustrator I used shapes to create the fish as well as the line, stamp and brush tools. I used the pathfinder to combine some of the shapes. I added strokes to all the shapes on the fish to make them stand out a little more. I added a stamp for the circular background, and then a swoosh from a brush as a watermark to go behind the text. I simply duplicated the fish by holding down the command key and dragging.

I created my business cards next by creating my making card templates, then adding my logo to the center. For the back I used a gold background on the back to match the color of the fishys lips. Then I added a stamped image inside a rectangle that matched the same stamped background image on the front of the card. I duplicated another fish, then resized it. I then added my text.

  • Description Black and white flier for Vouant Communications promoting their upcoming Graduate Leadership Conference.

Objectives Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process I began by drawing sketches of various designs. I used one of my sketches to begin the design you see here. The layout was created in Adobe InDesign using the frame tool. After I had the framework the way I wanted it I added the images, logo and text. I like the movement of the orbs which direct the flow from the heading (focal point) to the text, to the photo, and finally to the details at the bottom. I left ample white space, aligned my objects and text boxes, and I used contrast by shading the shapes.

  • Description Create an inspirational montage combining two or more images, and using typography.

Objectives Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow. Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message. Learn to blend images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image Apply typography principles. Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s) Select good quality images. (Note background should be at least 16501275 pixels)

Process After finding my photos I cropped the background image to 8.5 x 11 then created a duplicate background layer.I wanted the edges to look mysterious and blackened, so I created a layer between my original and background layer and filled it in with black. Next I moved back to the duplicate layer and used the rectangular

marquee tool to frame the image. Then I selected the inverse, feathered the edges by 100 px, then removed the inverse area.I added and adjusted the following layers: brightness and contrast, levels, vibrance, and hue and saturation.I used the lasso tool to select the image of the girl, then I clicked and dragger her into the cemetery photo. I reduced her size a little and positioned her. I added a layer mask to this layer and then used a soft brush and black paint to soften and blend the edges.I reduced the opacity of the layer.Next I added the text. To the smaller texts in blue I used the blending options panel to bevel, emboss, and add a drop shadow. Again I used the selective color tool. I had to repeat this process for the girl and the grass around her feet.I adding a stroke and an inner shadow to the background copy image. This slightly increased the shadow of black around the edges.25% tool under the Recolor tab under Format Picture tab to make it completely white. Next I duplicated that white flower image several times, and even resized some of the duplications slightly. Next I arranged my graphics to the formation I liked. Then I added a banner from the Shapes button, from the Stars and Banners category. Lastly I added my text in boxes.

    Montage 1

  • Not all those who wander are lost...J.R.R. Tolkien

All that is gold does not glitter,

  • Description This is a re-do of my Montage project. Although I met all of the requirements for the original project, in the end I just was not in love with it. I knew I could do better. So again, this is an inspirational montage combining two or more images, and using typography.

Process First I found my two images on the internet, and then I created a word cloud using tagul.com. using the words to the song, Savior Redeemer of my Soul by Orson F. Whitney. I opened a new file in Photoshop using the requires pixels. Then I placed my background picture, which is the girl holding a white lotus. I duplicated that layer so I would have a background image, then placed the word could I created between the twin layers. Next I added a mask layer to the top twin layer, and removed the entire backdrop behind the girl, which revealed all the words. Then I imprted my Tree of Life image, placing it behind the word layer. I added a layer mask to the Tree of Life image, and then feathered and removed the edges to soften it. I flattened the image and saved as a .jpeg.
