PART 1 ФРУКТЫ И ОБОЩИ – Fruits and Vegetables - PLURAL FORMS

To form plurals of noun add –ы, or (–и) to the masculine nouns. If the noun is feminine drop the –a ending first and then add –ы or (–и) Some words have irregular plurals and those are provided for you. Other are always singular. Write the ending –и (instead of –ы) after: к, г, х, ч, ш, щ, ж. It is a spelling rule.

7-Letter Spelling Rule: After: к, г, х, ч, ш, щ, ж always write –и (instead of –ы)

After those consonants you will always see –и ( not –ы) in Russian words ( ки, ги, хи, ши, щи, жи )

PART 3 Я ЛЮБЛЮ ... ( I like ……) Я ЛЮБЛЮ ЕСТЬ ... ( I like to eat ……)

Use the verb любить and plural forms of the fruits and vegetables when you talk about liking and disliking them. If you want to say that you like to eat them use the verb “есть” after Я люблю.

Ты любишь яблоки? Да, люблю. / Нет, не люблю. (Do you like apples?) (Yes, I do.) / (No, I don’t.) Она / он любит яблоки? Да, она любит. / Нет, он не любит.

(Does she/he you like apples?) (Yes, she does) / (No, he doesn’t.)

Какие фрукты ты любишь? Какие овощи ты любишь? (What kind of fruit do you like?) (What kind of vegetables do you like?)

Я люблю есть апельсины .

Она /он любит огурцы .

If you want to use the names of fruits which have only singular forms and end with -a (e.g. кукуруза, капуста, клубника, картошка, свёкла, тыква), drop out the ending –a and replace it with –у.

Я люблю: кукурузу, капусту, клубнику, картошку, свёклу, тыкву.

Тебе нравятся яблоки? Да, мне нравятся. / Нет, мне не нравятся. (Do you like apples?) (Yes, I do.) / (No, I don’t.)

Ей / ему нравятся помидоры? Да, ей нравятся. / Нет, ему не нравятся. (Does she/he you like tomatoes?) (Yes, she does) / (No, he doesn’t.)

Какие фрукты тебе нравятся? Какие овощи тебе нравятся?

Мне нравятся апельсины . Ей нравится кукуруза.

Ему нравится картошка.

Always use the singular form of the verb нравиться (which is нравится) if it is followed by a verb.

Мне нравится есть груши. Ей нравится читать книги.

PART 6 THE VERBS ЕСТЬ (to eat) AND ПИТЬ (to drink)

Remember that in Russian verbs have different endings for: I, you (sg), she/he, we, you (pl), they.

Below you may see the endings for the Russian verb for “to eat” and “to drink”

Graded Bell Work On your index card write 4 descriptions of your own words for various Russian foods to be guessed by your classmates. Use as many Russian words as you can while describing your foods. Use Part 5 / B as a model. Provide the Russian word to be guessed at the end of your description. Each description has to have at least 1 Russian word.
