My Dear Parish Family,
On November 26, Faith Formation planned and hosted a family dinner and reconciliation service for parishfamilies with children in grades one through eight. We had about 220 people for a lovely pasta and salad dinner inthe Serra Center. The children made a craft that they then used for the procession into church. We had a beautiful, rich 13-minute prayer service with Fr. Patrick presiding assisted by two young lectors, Taylor Vanasse and DavidModrovich from Faith Factor Live, Dominic and Jeannine MacAller on music, and six additional priests to hearconfessions. We provided babysitting supervised by mom Coleen Barsley and two break-out groups for children ingrades 1 through 8 who are still preparing for sacraments led by Anita Green and Catherine Shadduck. All of thiswas done with the loving help of 12 high school Confirmation candidates. A true community effort!
It was a beautiful way for parents to witness their faith to their children by their actions and perfect timingpreparing for Advent. The moments that touched my heart were the thunderous fellowship during dinner, the joyfulsmiles creating crafts, the prayer service itself truly beautiful, the parents shepherding their little ones off to thevarious rooms or to a line to see a priest, the young mom picking up her toddler in the babysitting room who wasgrateful to have had a chance to go to confession after many years, and the wife who confided that her non-Catholic husband went to talk with a priest.
If you did not have a chance to be at this lovely evening and receive the enrichment and calming peace through thegoodness and grace of this sacrament, please do check the schedule on page 6 and try your best to go to confessionat one of the four parishes on the list this Advent season.
A week ago, a young mom sent an email to the office letting us know that unfortunately her first grader would notbe able to attend the family dinner and reconciliation service. She explained that she is almost due to have a babyand the doctor told her to rest. Scheduled to have the baby the following week, she was also concerned that herlittle daughter would be missing her usual grade one center as well. She hoped that these absences would notjeopardize her standing in Faith Formation classes. Of course immediately the answer was it was perfectly alrightfor her daughter to miss her class.
This little scenario has been on my mind ever since. I have been pondering the microcosm of lessons in this oneexperience. Imagine that mother being anxious about her daughter missing class the first week of Advent … thelesson planned that day was about anticipation, preparation and the coming of the baby Jesus as a sign of God’sgreat love for us. I bet that little girl learned all about all of those things first hand with the coming of her own babybrother or sister. God’s great love for us made manifest in the birth of a baby. How rich for her to experience thatlove!
I imagine that little girl home with her family, her mommy and new baby during the Advent season … encirclingeach other with warm arms, soft smiles and gentle sighs … not unlikeMary and Joseph long ago. By the way, as the Spirit would have it,that little girl’s name is … Faith.
Advent Blessings,

Protectthe Children
Shopping mall safety tipsIt’s easy for kids to get sidetracked with all the sights, sounds, andsmells surrounding us at holiday time. It is especially important tomonitor your children when taking them through the mall during theChristmas season. If children become separated from you, teachthem to look for a “safe stranger” who can help them. For example, amom with kids or the cash register person can help a child who islost. Avoid telling children to go to the “manager.” Any adult in asuit, who looks important, can look like the manager to a child.Children must be told never to leave the mall or store to go lookingfor you in the parking lot. Let them know that you would never gooutside or leave until you are reunited — no matter what anyone elsetells them.
FingerprintingIs mandatory for all adult staff and volunteers who work directlywith children. Thursday, December 13, 2012
