In-TAC's 8th Annual Appreciation Gala 2017

Celebrating Ten Years of Making an Impact: International Talent Helps Businesses Thrive

On May 11th, 2017, Ottawa’s business leaders, community stakeholders, government representatives, newcomer graduates of In-TAC’s bridging program and 200 associated guests gathered at In-TAC’s 8th Annual Appreciation Gala at the Shaw Centre. In-TAC celebrated ten years of connecting international talent with Canadian businesses, as well as the 100th graduating cohort from the bridge-to-employment program for new immigrants. The gala, emceed by CBC’s Omar Dabaghi-Pacheco, kicked off with a networking reception, followed by dinner and a keynote speech delivered by Serge Cormier, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC). The evening concluded with the presentation of eight

achievement awards. Employment, social prosperity and economic integration were the gala’s keywords. As parliamentary Secretary Cormier said, "We all know when we work together towards the successful integration of newcomers into Canada’s society, the country will benefit.” OCCSC’s Executive Director Sharon Kan reiterated Mr. Cormier’s message in her speech. She shared concrete examples of the services In-TAC and OCCSC provide to newcomers, whose successes are the true measure of its worth. In-TAC was also honoured to welcome MPs Mary Ng and Chandra Arya. Both offered thoughtful remarks that echoed the gala’s key message, that “International Talent Helps Businesses Thrive”. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, along with IRCC Minister Ahmed Hussen, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, and Ontario’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Laura Albanese, sent letters of

congratulations, commending In-TAC for its dedication to help internationally trained professionals achieve their full potential in Canada, its contributions towards strengthening Canada’s workforce and building a

competitive economy. Over the past ten years, thanks to In-TAC and its 400 business partners in Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver, nearly 1,500 internationally educated professionals (IEPs) from over 100 countries have found work in their fields of expertise. The gala was a chance for our clients and partners to create new connections, and to celebrate the contributions IEPs have made to our local economies and the successful relationships we have fostered over the last decade. Canadian economy, and that only by building strong collaborations and partnerships can we create stronger and more prosperous communities in Canada for decades to come. 2017 Newcomers Welcome Fair with a Great Success

Every year the Ottawa Chinese

Community Service Centre

(OCCSC) organizes community

events to welcome newcomers to

Ottawa, and introduces them to

many organizations and agencies

that are able to help them settle

down comfortably and safely in

Ottawa.

On May 28th (Sunday), 2017, the

OCCSC organized the Newcomers

Welcome Fair at Mother Teresa

High School. The event was attend-

ed by Ottawa’s Mayor Jim Watson,

30 service providers, community

partners, and over 800 participants.

It was a resounding success! The

purpose was to welcome newcom-

ers to Ottawa and celebrate Cana-

da’s 150th anniversary

Yu Dance Group.

OCCSC Services for Syrian Refugees Program opened its

Eastside branch to give language training and settlement service to Syrian refugees living in the Eastside. Childminding is provide to the language students.

Syrian Children’s Art Auction Ottawa Chinese Community Ser-

vice Centre’s Support Syrian Refugee Program actively participated in the Children for Peach– Heart to Heart art exhibit in the city hall. All 40 paintings submitted by Syrian refugee children were auctioned off and the $5455 will go to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Our own Hassan Ezdahmad, the coordinator of this program, who has tirelessly organized the support for the Syrian refugees, stood in front of a building where lots Syrian families live with some of the painters.

In April, OCCSC’s Services for Syrian Refugees Program held the Volunteer Appreciation Party to thank all the volunteers, staff and sponsors who participated in helping Syrian refugees.

WOW is an annual, week-long series of dia-logues, cultural and celebratory events, sports activities, documentary screenings, and other fun events designed to welcome and convey the genuine hospitality of Ottawa to newcomers. As part of the event, OCCSC’s Syrian Hosting Initiative will celebration Canada’s 150th Anni-versary on June 28th, 1-3 PM. This initiative connects Syrian families with 150 local volunteers. It will share stories of friend-ship, employment and inclusion and will include multicultural performances and a display of 150 pieces of art made by the initiative’s participants. Location: 750 Ridgewood Avenue. All are welcome!

OCCSC Radio started the following new shows in May for the audience to enjoy; FM97.9 CHIN Radio every Sunday evening 8-11 pm.

On April 30th, 2017, I , an international stu-dent form China, realized a dream. I had the honour to be involved in the Ottawa Chinese Community Service Centre’s radio program on CHIN Radio, and shared the happy moments and challenges of my student life. FM97.9 CHIN Radio is a multilingual radio station. It has Italian, Chinese, Portuguese, Korean, Spanish, Arabic, etc. Each program is edited and hosted by community organi-zations and volunteers. The Chinese program is run by OCCSC. The Mandarin program starts on 8pm on Sundays. It runs 3 hours. The community volunteer hosts will run studio interviews, play works submitted by community mem-bers, and play recorded stories produced by Chinese immigrants. The Chinese Producer

Ms. Jasmine heard that we were curious about radio, so she invited us to give a try in the studio! My friend Stephanie and I arrived in the

studio at 7:50 pm. The station looks small

from outside, but surprisingly open and

bright inside. The decorations are very

modern and comfortable. There is a station

logo at the entry.

Greeting us were the two hosts, Yi Jiang and

Jiong Tu. This was the first time we met

hosts. We were a little nervous. But they

were very friendly and warm. The live

studio is so cool!

(from Page 7) The lights were dim but all the buttons glowed mysterious little lights. The man in the photo is the operator, very kind, and his smile is just lovely! He welcomed us warmly. Knowing that we were nervous, he kept encouraging us. He was also a DJ! The program started at 8pm. After the community news and events, it was our turn. I didn’t know if Stephanie was nervous, within the 10 minutes, I was ex-cited, nervous, shaking with a smile! Because it’s live on air, we couldn’t let out any unrelated sound. Stephanie and I communicated during the 10 minutes with body language and typing on our phone.

The 10 minutes passed quickly. I don’t remember what I said. Fortunately, the hosts led us well, and we kept talking.

The interview was quite smooth. I am so happy that I had this opportuni-ty to get involved in radio. The experi-ence was fun and significant! Now I can check off another item on my life list! By the way, the program welcomes the Chinese community to contribute, and helps promote community events. The best way is to email in a recording. If you like to sing, use your voices and give a speech, if you would like to try your hand on radio reporting, record it and send it to [email protected], and it’s highly likely that the program will show off your talent!

OCCSC Chinese Radio on CHIN Radio

Collaborative painting, Celebrat-

ing Canada’s 150th Anniversary”

OCCSC invited Ottawa Tiancai Arts School to design and coordi-nate a huge collaborative mural, the theme was Celebrating Canada’s 150 Anniversary, and it attracted many children. The painting is 10 feet by 6 feet, combining Canadian cultural elements. It will be given to Mayor Watson after the painting is completed; participating children can sign their name on the painting and card that will be presented to Mayor Watson.

Extremely Popular Talent Show; It was the first year that OCCSC offered talent show opportunities to the immigrant children and youth. Over 40 children from Ottawa per-formed, which included Hiphop, Tap, Cucurbit Flute, Pipa, violin, piano, singing and rhythmic gym-nastics by the Barrhaven Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. It showcased the talent of immigration youth and children in the community. All performances drew attention from audience. More importantly, all parents and children appreciated the opportunity to perform, while offering the younger generation the opportunity to showcase their talent and develop their self-confidence. All performers were very excited to receive souvenirs and appreciation certificates from OCCSC.

Hand-Made Delicious Food from Happy Kitchen Our "Happy Kitchen, Healthy Liv-ing" project is held every Friday at the Nepean Community Health Center, where new immigrants learn to cook, make friends, find out information, volunteer, and par-ticipate in society. The students sold their handmade goods in a bake sale with various delicacies such as twisted bread, cinnamon bread, special Chinese Shaanxi cold noodles and more. We raised $581! The proceeds of the sales go towards Happy Kitchen projects.

Each year, the OCCSC Newcomers Welcome Fair receives great community and volunteer support. Special thanks go to our 65 volunteers who helped make our event a huge success. We would like to acknowledge Mayor Watson for his continued

On May 19th, we gathered for another

Happy Kitchen Cooking Day. To pre-

pare for our sale at the Community Wel-

come Fair organized by the Ottawa

Chinese Community Service Centre

(OCCSC), we got up early to get ready.

Under the direction of Ms. Han, a settle-

ment worker of OCCSC , we were going

to prepare cold dishes made from bean

starch and flour.

Cold dishes are popular, but difficult to

make. For

example,

Liang Pi,

made from

bean starch,

requires

hours of

manual

work, and

one must

pay atten-

tion to de-

tails. Spicing it up is another science:

color, shape, texture and taste need to

mix into perfection.

Mr. Hongfu Yin arrived first. It was his

birthday, so we all sang Happy Birthday

for him while working. Ms. Wendy, who

was called “Foodie”, also showed up to

support us. Mr. Jian Yan and Mrs. Meifu

Zhao, despite of jetlag, joined us to mix

the food. Also in the crowd were Shaozhi

Liu, Yunfeng Gao, Hengli Li, Wenying

Yang, and the 6-Grade nephew of Ms.

Han.

It took us the whole morning to finish the

work. We put the final products into

containers. Mr. Han applied the labels of

Happy Kitchen onto each lid.

Soon after this cooking session, we

learned that our products had all been

sold out. We were thrilled that our hard

work had

paid off.

LINC Newsletter, June 2017 LINC continued with a busy schedule in May. The weather was surprisingly unpredictable, with very low to very high temperatures in one week, but it did not prevent our teachers and their students from visiting Dows Lake with the beautiful tulips in fool bloom. We had a very interesting presentation to our highest-level evening classes, by a Speaker Bureau at Aga Khan Founda-tion Canada (AKFC) member, who talked about international development and Canada's role in it. Some other higher-level classes will have the same presentation in June. For all newcomers who want to register for LINC, please note that you first need to have your English assessed, at the YMCA Language Assessment and Referral Centre (240 Catherine St., Suite 308; Tel: 613-238-5462) – when you fin-ish the assessment, please ask to be sent to our school, OC-CSC LINC. We are still the only LINC provider in the city that has evening and Saturday classes, for those who work or go to school during the day and the week. If you want to join them, please contact us as soon as you have the results of your language assessment.
