Lakers win as Curry goes coldLos AngelesAFP

Lou Williams and Julius Randle scored 20 points each as the Los Angeles Lakers shocked Golden State

117-97 on Friday to give coach Luke Walton a big win in his first game against his former team.

Randle also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for the Lakers, who took full advantage of the shooting woes of Warri-ors superstar Stephen Curry.

Curry, the reigning two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, missed all 10 of his three-point attempts, ending his remarka-ble streak of 157 games with at least one three-pointer made.

D'Angelo Russell added 17 points and Larry Nance contrib-uted 12 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who never trailed against the top offensive team in the league.

Kevin Durant scored 27 points, while Draymond Green had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors, who were com-ing off an emotional blowout win over Durant's former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, on Thursday.

Durant stayed steady, scor-ing 20 or more points for the 70th consecutive regular-sea-son game. That's the longest run since Michael Jordan had a 69-game streak during the 1990-91 season.

Curry finished with just 13 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, while teammate Klay Thompson scored just 10 points -- connecting on four of 18 from the floor and two of 10 from three-point range.

"Obviously for us it was nice that Steph and Klay went two for 20 from three (point range)," said Walton, a former assistant

to Steve Kerr at Golden State who guided the Warriors early last season as Kerr recovered from spinal surgery complica-tions. But Walton also liked what he saw from his young players, including 26 assists and a 51-40 rebounding advantage.

"That means that we're shar-ing the ball, we're playing like a

team and we're fighting," Wal-ton said.

The Warriors rallied in the third quarter, trimming the def-icit to 87-81 after a layup by reserve forward Kevon Looney.

Walton said his message to the Lakers was to keep their heads.

"Let's not let them back in

the game," Walton told his play-ers. "They're good enough they can find a way back in on their own. Let's make them work for everything."

The Lakers had rebuilt the lead to 93-82 going into the fourth quarter, and the Warri-ors wouldn't again get the gap into single digits again.

Porzingis sparks Knicks over BullsChicago AFP

Kristaps Porzingis scored 27 points as the New York Knicks defeated

the Chicago Bulls 117-104 to make it a triumphant return for Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah on Friday.

Porzingis, controversially benched during New York's defeat to Detroit earlier this week, added five rebounds to lead the scoring for the Knicks at the United Center.

Carmelo Anthony was close behind Porzingis, con-tributing 25 points and seven rebounds.

But the linchpin of the victory was the returning Rose, who joined the Knicks in the close season in a block-buster trade after eight seasons in Chicago.

Rose finished with 15 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds in the win. Noah had 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

"It was fun, I'm a compet-itor, I compete," a satisfied Rose said after a win which improved the Knicks record to 2-3.

"The game was big because we'd dropped two games. We needed to figure out how to win.

"We've all got individ-ual skills but figuring out how to win games, we've got to put our skills aside to get the win. I think that's what we did tonight," Rose added.

Noah had also made the same switch from Chicago to New York in the close season after nine years with the Bulls.

Habs suffer 10-0 loss to Blue Jackets in NHLCanadaAFP

The Montreal Canadiens were thumped 10-0 by the Columbus Blue Jackets in

Ohio to match the worst loss in their 107-year history.

The Canadiens entered the game with the best record in the National Hockey League in the young season and had not lost a game in regulation, but that run came to a shuddering halt when they were buried by the rampant Blue Jackets.

It was the fourth 10-0 loss in Montreal's history and the last time the Canadiens lost by 10 goals was in 1995 when they were beaten 11-1 by the Detroit Red Wings.

"There's nothing positive about tonight, nothing ... I don't remember being part of a game like this," coach Michel

Therrien told reporters. Added captain Max Pacioretty: "That was definitely the outcome we deserved tonight.

"It's tough to shake it off when you get scored on that many times, but we'll see what happens when we lace them up tomorrow." The Canadiens have won 23 Stanley Cups, their last coming in 1993.

Meanwhile, rookie Brandon Tanev's second goal of the game, with 1:16 left, broke a tie and led Winnipeg to a come-from-behind win over Detroit at Joe Louis Arena.

Cubs outfielder Fowler is becoming a free agentNew YorkAgencies

Chicago Cubs outfielder Dexter Fowler is becom-ing a free agent but has

not counted out a return to the World Series champion Chicago Cubs.

The 30-year-old Fowler re-signed with the Cubs last offseason on a one-year, $8m contract that included a mutual option worth $9m for 2017, but he apparently won't be picking up his side of the deal.

"I'm definitely going to be a free agent, but hopefully it hap-pens a little bit quicker than last year," Fowler told ESPN.

"You can't control what goes on, but I loved my time in

Chicago and I'm definitely not counting them out, but we'll see what God has planned for us now."

Fowler opened Game 7 of the World Series with a solo home run off Cleveland Indians starter Corey Kluber in the top of the first inning at Progressive Field on Wednesday night, and the Cubs went on to a thrilling 8-7 win in 10 innings to end their 108-year championship drought.

The Cleveland Indians exer-cised contract options Friday on manager Terry Francona for the 2019 and 2020 seasons to keep him at the helm for at least another four more years.

The 57-year-old Francona just finished his fourth season

with the Indians, who won the American League Central with a 94-67 record (.584) and defeated the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays in the posts-eason to win the AL pennant before losing the World Series to the Chicago Cubs in seven games on Wednesday night. The Indians reached the World Series for the first time since 1997.

Francona was given praise for being gracious after the Indi-ans' heartbreaking loss in Game 7."You know, we ask our play-ers to play the game with respect and to leave it on the field," Francona told FOX Sports' Tom Verducci after the 8-7, 10-inning loss in the game that ended early Thursday morning.

Dexter Fowler grimaces in pain after fouling the ball off his knee in this file picture.

Duminy, Elgar centuries put South Africa on top

Perth Reuters

South Africa's JP Duminy and Dean Elgar both scored cen-turies in a third-wicket

partnership of 250 to drive the tourists to a 388-run lead over Australia at the end of the third day of the first Test yesterday.

Australia removed both cen-turions around the tea break, as well as Temba Bavuma and cap-tain Faf du Plessis in the last hour, but by then the damage had been done and the Proteas will go into day four on 390 for six.

Quinton de Kock, who was dropped by Adam Voges on one, was at the crease unbeaten on 16 at the end of a long, hot day at the WACA, along with Ver-non Philander, who had made 23 not out.

South African paceman Dale Steyn was ruled out of the rest of the series and will play no fur-ther part in the match, reducing the number of wickets Australia need to take.

Duminy's brilliant 141 rammed home South Africa's advantage after they had skittled Australia for 244 in reply to their 242 on Friday.

Duminy faced 225 balls and hit 20 of them for fours with another going for six, overhaul-ing partner Elgar before lunch and reaching his fifth test cen-tury with two runs to deep cover soon after the break.

The end came just as it

looked like the pair of left-hand-ers would bat through to tea, Peter Siddle benefiting from a DRS review when the technol-ogy revealed a nick off the bat that carried through to wicket-keeper Peter Nevill.

Elgar did not have such a good experience on his previous visit to the WACA, having got a pair when he made his test debut at the ground in 2012, albeit on the winning team.

Dogged and determined where Duminy was fluent, the 29-year-old reached his fifth test century half an hour before tea after a prolonged spell in the "nervous nineties".

His career-best 127 came off 316 balls and he had hit 17 fours and one six when Josh Hazle-wood finally winkled him out after tea when he offered a tired shot and got an edge which Mitchell Starc took at gully.

Starc should have caught Elgar on 81 when the batsman skied the ball to mid-off but he lost the ball in the Perth sun, tripped himself over trying to readjust his position and spilled it on the turf, to the despair of bowler Nathan Lyon.

The left-arm paceman also accounted for Du Plessis (32), a fine edge taken behind by Nev-ill, while Hazlewood had Bavuma well caught by Usman Khawaja at deep square leg for eight but the collapse Australia needed never materialised.

Cook hails Anderson return for India Tests Mumbai AFP

Captain Alastair Cook yesterday hailed top bowler Jimmy Anderson's surprise return from injury as he insisted England would

revel in their status as underdogs during their tour of India.

Cook said that Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker with 463 scalps, had been given the all-clear following a shoulder problem and could arrive in India as early as Tuesday.

"It's really good news. He's ready to come so it's just about trying to get him out to Rajkot as quick as we can," Cook, 31, told reporters in Mumbai.

The first Test of the five-match series starts in Rajkot, in western Gujarat state, on Wednes-day as India seek revenge for a home series loss to England four years ago.

The powerful Anderson will miss the open-ing Test but could be ready to lead England's attack for the second match, which starts in And-hra Pradesh state, on November 17, said Cook.

Anderson suffered a fractured shoulder blade last summer and had been dogged by a recur-rence of the injury but passed fitness tests back home on Friday while the rest of the England squad were already training in India.

"I was chatting to him yesterday and the sec-ond Test is a good possibility. We'll know when we see how his body reacts when he's out here," said the skipper.

Anderson took more wickets than any other pace bowler on either side when England won the 2012 series in India and Cook believes the fired-up 34-year-old could be the difference again.

"He's worked incredibly hard to get back and has come back so much quicker than we thought.

"He's up for it and is not just coming here to make up the numbers so that's great for us. He wants to make a difference in this series," Cook told a post-training press conference.

India are number one in the world and have not lost a Test series at home since left-handed batsman Cook expertly lead England to a 2-1 vic-tory four years ago.

England's spin attack is weaker than it was back then when Graeme Swann and Monty Pan-esar excelled on Indian soil but Cook is confident that his side can spring a surprise.

"Unfortunately we haven't quite got that experience of probably top quality spinners. (But) Mo (Moeen Ali) has been very successful against India in the past. Rash (Adil Rashid) has done very well in One Day Cricket and we probably haven't seen the best of him in Test cricket yet. (So) we've actually got more options in this squad than we did in the last squad," he said.

Cook warned critics not to write off his team even if they do lose in the opening Test recalling his side's heroics the last time they toured India.

"I remember sitting in a press conference after the first Test and everyone was talking about how you're going to stop India winning 4-0 and we managed to turn it around and win 2-1. It shows that anything is possible."

England are looking to bounce back from a humiliating defeat to minnows Bangladesh last week and Cook believes that being underdogs, rather than favourites, will work in his side's favour.

Dominant All Blacks target Sexton, Murray threat

Rahman set to return on Bangladesh's New Zealand tour

Chicago AFP

New Zealand captain Kieran Read says the All Blacks were targeting Ire-

land half-backs Conor Murray and Johnny Sexton when the two nations battled it out at Soldier Field later yesterday.

The All Blacks were to start as overwhelming favourites to

extend their record 18-match winning streak against the Irish, who have never beaten New Zealand in more than a century of trying.

Read however is wary of the threat posed by scrum-half Mur-ray and fly-half Sexton, who were to resume their potent alli-ance behind the scrum.

"They're a structured side and they use the nine and 10 to

direct them around the field really well," Read told reporters on the sidelines of New Zealand's final training session Friday.

"So we've just got to try and upset that as much as we can and not let them get too much momentum."

The All Blacks were also devising a plan to shackle Ire-land second row Devin Toner, the athletic 6ft 11in (2.10m) lock

who tower over the rest of the lineout.

"He doesn't change the way we'll approach our lineouts," Read said. "But obviously on their ball he's going to be a big target for them. We've just got to get up and put as much pressure on him as we can."

New Zealand had plans to tackle Toner with both of their first choice second row players

- Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick - missing through injury. Luke Romano was also absent after flying home from Chicago this week following a family bereavement.

It left New Zealand starting with a new-look pairing in the engine room of the pack, with loose forward Jerome Kaino starting alongside Pat Tuipulotu at lock.

Read said Kaino had adapted well to the challenge of starting his 75th Test match in a new position.

"His ears are a bit sore," Read joked. "He's excited by the chal-lenge. It's his first start in a foreign jersey but he's excited. He's been willing to do every-thing for the boys. He's got a zip in his step which is awesome to see."

Bangladesh cricket authori-ties yesterday said that they are expecting pace prodigy

Mustafizur Rahman will be avail-able in their upcoming December series in New Zealand as they declared the squad for the tour.

Nicknamed "The Fizz", the 21-year-old left-arm pacer missed the recent home series against England recovering from

shoulder surgery that he under-went in Britain on August 10.

Rahman aggravated an old shoulder injury in July during his short stint with English county side Sussex in the Twenty20 Blast competition when he could only play in two matches before being sidelined.

"He has already started bowl-ing in the nets and we hope he will be fully fit before our New Zealand series starts," said selec-tor Habibul Bashar.

Bangladesh will play three one-day internationals, two Tests and two Twenty20 internation-als in New Zealand from December 26 to January 24.

Prior to the visit, Bangladesh

will hold a camp in Sydney where they will play two Twenty20 warm-up matches against local teams Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunders.

Selectors included Rahman

in Bangladesh's 20-member squad for the Australia and New Zealand trip that was announced late on Friday. Unheralded Tan-veer Haider is the only surprise inclusion in the squad, which also retained paceman Subashis Roy, who was in the squad for the recent second Test against Eng-land but did not play.

Leg spinner Haider impressed in a recent two-day warm-up match against England when he picked up 4-53.

"We were looking for a good leg spinner for quite some time. We hope Tanveer would deliver it," said Bashar about the 24-year-old who has six first-class centuries. Selectors also included uncapped pacer Ebadat Hossain and teenage batsman Nazmul Hossain as a developing prospect though they are not officially part of the squad. The squad did not include bastman Nasir Hossain and pacemen Al Amin Hossain and Rubel Hossain in the team.

Kenyans aim to conquer NY Marathon

New YorkReuters

Kenyans Stanley Biwott and Mary Keitany chase repeat victories - and more - as the major mar-

athon season concludes in New York City tomorrow.

Success would ensure Kenya of a fourth consecutive sweep of New York titles and give Keitany her third straight victory but both runners have some added motivation.

Biwott, the fastest man in the field, won his first major mara-thon on the New York streets last year, but must erase any doubts about his fitness after dropping out of the Rio Olympic marathon mid-race in August.

"This will be my chance to prove I am still a worthy bet in running," the 30-year-old Lon-don Marathon runner-up told reporters in Nairobi.

Keitany bids to become the first woman in three decades to

win New York three consecutive times. Nine-time winner Grete Waitz was the last, her streak of five in a row ending in 1986.

But the 34-year-old Keitany, an overwhelming favourite, also is looking to remind Kenyan selectors once again of their mis-take in not picking her for the Rio Olympics.

"I thought I earned a ticket to Rio," Keitany said on Friday. "So let me just focus on the mar-athon for New York and come to defend my title."

Ethiopian Aselefech Mergia, the 2015 New York City runner-up, should again challenge Keitany with the former's com-patriot Buzunesh Deba and Kenyan Joyce Chepkirui also in the mix.

US Olympic triathlon gold medallist Gwen Jorgensen and Molly Huddle, the American record holder at 10,000 metres, will make their marathon debuts in the women's race.

Biwott's biggest threats among the 50,000 runners

expected to participate in the race through New York City's five boroughs are likely to come from fellow Africans Ghirmay Ghebreslassie of Eritrea, Ethio-pian Lelisa Desisa and Kenyan Lucas Rotich.

Ghebreslassie finished fourth in Rio and at the London Mara-thon after becoming the youngest ever world marathon champion last year at age 19.

Desisa, 26, has twice won the Boston Marathon and finished second there this year.

He placed third in New York last year.

The 26-year-old Rotich's credentials are not as impres-sive, but he continues to improve on the roads and is one of only five men in the field who have broken two hours and eight min-utes for the marathon.

One other is three-time Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein, who with a personal best of 2:07.47 is the top hope for the United States, which last won the race in 2009.

New York City bolsters security after threats New YorkReuters

New York City will enhance security at the world's larg-est marathon tomorrow by

deploying more police officers, bomb-sniffing dogs, helicopters and patrol boats than last year fol-lowing a reported threat of militant attacks ahead of Tuesday's election.

The city was on heightened alert after federal authorities said on Friday they were aware of an unspecific threat of attacks by the al Qaeda militant group around Election Day. For tomorrow's mar-athon, the number of uniformed and plain-clothes officers assigned to the race will be 10 percent more than for last year's and other resources have also been increased, police said. The increases were first announced on Wednesday.

Tensions in the biggest US city were raised in September when a pressure cooker bomb exploded on a sidewalk in Manhattan's Chel-sea neighborhood, wounding 31 people and evoking memories of the 2013 Boston Marathon bomb-ing. In New York this weekend, police will run screening check-points near the start and finish of the race, as well as mobile cam-eras and units to detect radiation, the department said. Some offic-ers will be on horseback, as is common in the city.

Australia's Rod Pampling fol-lowed up his scintillating first-round 60 with a three-

under par 68 on Friday to maintain a one-shot lead in the US PGA Tour tournament in Las Vegas.

Second-round play at TPC Sum-merlin was suspended because of darkness with 19 players still on the course. Pampling's 14-under par total of 128 put him one stroke in front of American Brooks Koepka, who carded a 67 for 129.

Aaron Wise was 12-under for the tournament with four holes remaining when play was halted, and Chris Kirk was in the club-house on 11-under 131 after a 65.

Pampling appeared to feel some letdown after challenging for a 59 on Thursday, opening with two bogeys in his first five holes.

He recovered by playing his last 13 holes in five-under with six birdies.

"Just two silly mistakes that I made," Pampling said of his slow start. "I knew things were still good. I didn't panic. I made a good one on I think it was our sixth hole for birdie and then made a great up-and-down on 16."

That just kind of righted the ship, and then after that I was fine, and we played nice after that."

Koepka, ranked 22nd in the world, grabbed a share of the lead after an eagle at the par-five 16th, but dropped a shot with a closing bogey. Kirk, whose 36-hole total of 131 was his lowest since a 130 at the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii, briefly held the clubhouse lead.

Manny Pacquiao announced his retire-ment seven months

ago but after serving his first stint as a rookie senator, the fire was rekindled and the stage set for a return to boxing.

Pacquiao is hoping to reclaim the WBO welter-weight title for the third time. But juggling two jobs, includ-ing his new gig as a full-time politician in the Philippine Senate, has cut into his train-ing camp.

Pacquiao, who turns 38 next month, is going up against the younger WBO champ Jessie Vargas, who has a height, reach and weight advantage.

Pacquiao tipped the scales at 144.8 pounds (65.7 kilo-grams) in front of a crowd of about 900 at Friday's weigh-in at the Encore Theater inside the Wynn hotel and casino. Vargas (27-1, 10 knockouts) weighed in at 146.5 pounds.

"I know I am the chal-lenger going in and I have to fight that way," Pacquiao said Friday. "It is not enough to do well, I have to take the title away from him."

Pacquiao arrived first stripping off his black and gold track suit and stepping on the scale wearing grey boxer shorts and trademark white socks.

"It want to make history. It would mean a lot for me to win this fight," he said.

Pacquiao won the WBO title for the first time in 2010 when he beat Miguel Cotto. He lost it two years later to

Timothy Bradley, then got it back by winning the rematch with Bradley in 2014. He then lost it to Floyd Mayweather last year.

Pacquiao (58-6-2 with 38 KOs) still has a lot left and a seven-month hiatus can hardly be considered a retire-ment. But he's not getting any

younger and hasn't had a knockout victory since 2009.

No fighter can go on for-ever. It remains to be seen if his part-time training routine and the wear of 66 profes-sional fights finally brings Pacman to a halt against Var-gas, who is 10 years younger, five inches (13 centimeters)

taller and has a four-inch reach advantage.

Pacquiao said he was retiring following his April 9 two- knockdown victory over Bradley in their third fight.

Pacquiao looked impres-sive in stopping Bradley, showing that he has recov-ered from a shoulder injury which hampered him in his fight against Mayweather in May 2015.

Now it remains to be seen what Vargas' youth and size advantage means against the highly skilled and more expe-rienced Pacquiao.

Vargas is making his first title defence after winning the vacant WBO crown by beat-ing Sadam Ali.

"Manny Pacquiao has had a great career," said Vargas, who is from Las Vegas but says he is fighting for Mexi-can pride.

"Everybody that beats him becomes a legend and I look forward to becoming a legend."

Troubled Spurs face in-form Arsenal in fierce London derby LondonAFP

Buoyed by the return of Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur will look to arrest

their current slump and improve their dismal record at the Emir-ates Stadium in tomorrow's derby against Arsenal.

Though they remain the last unbeaten team in the Premier League, Tottenham have gone six games without victory in all competitions since their stun-ning 2-0 defeat of Manchester City a month ago.

Wednesday's 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen left them in third place in their Champions League group and manager Mauricio Pochettino concedes preparation for the 179th North London derby has not been ideal.

Pochettino is yet to lose a league game against Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, win-ning one and drawing three of their four encounters, although he did taste defeat against him in last season's League Cup.

Spurs have won just once at Arsenal since May 1993 -- a 3-2 success in November 2010 -- but will draw encouragement from Kane's return to fitness after seven weeks out with an ankle ligament injury.

The 23-year-old England

striker has scored four goals in his three league games against Arsenal and although he is understandably short of match fitness, Pochettino says he could start.

In Kane's absence, Spurs have scored only three goals in their last six games and have not scored from open play in the last five. Midfielder Mousa Dembele faces a late fitness test on a foot problem, but centre-back Toby Alderweireld (leg) and winger Erik Lamela (hip) are definitely out and Moussa Sissoko is suspended.

Arsenal go into the game carrying momentum, Wenger's side having won 10 of their last 11 matches in all competitions.

They came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Ludogorets

Razgrad in the Champions League on Tuesday, when Mesut Ozil's sumptuous 87th-minute winner took Arsenal into the last 16 for the 17th season running.

Spurs have not finished above Arsenal since 1995, hav-ing been pipped to second place behind Leicester City by their rivals on last season's final day.

But Wenger was reluctant to entertain suggestions his side have any kind of mental hold over their foes from the other end of the Seven Sisters Road.

Winger Theo Walcott is expected to overcome a ham-string problem to start, while midfielder Granit Xhaka returns after a three-game domestic ban. But Wenger has doubts over Santi Cazorla (Achilles), Nacho Monreal (muscular), Hec-tor Bellerin (knock) and Kieran Gibbs (shoulder).

Olivier Giroud, meanwhile, is putting pressure on Alexis Sanchez for the lone striker's role, having scored three times in his last two appearances.

There has been just one 0-0 draw in the last 43 meetings between the teams and the omens for goals are good. The last time Arsenal and Tottenham met at midday was in November 2004, when an 81st-minute Robert Pires strike was enough to give Wenger's men a dizzying 5-4 vic-tory at White Hart Lane.

Boro halt City, Moyes breathes again ManchesterAgencies

Marten De Roon's dramatic stop-page-time header cancelled out Ser-gio Aguero's

first-half goal and earned Mid-dlesbrough a point with a 1-1 draw at Manchester City yesterday

Aguero touched in his 150th City goal from Kevin De Bruyne's low cross to cap a dominant first-half performance from Pep Guardiola's side.

But they could not match it in the second, despite creating several good chances, and were caught late on as Dutch mid-fielder De Roon powered in George Friend's cross for his first goal since joining Boro from Ata-lanta for £12m (€14m, $15.5m) in the summer.

The point was enough for City to go a point clear of Arse-nal and Liverpool, who both play today.

It secured a terrific result for Aitor Karanka's side, but was

desperately disappointing for Guardiola, four days after his side had produced an outstand-ing performance to defeat Barcelona in the Champions League.

Guardiola decided to give centre-back Nicolas Otamendi and winger Raheem Sterling a rest after a hectic recent sched-ule, while Claudio Bravo returned in goal, having been suspended for the midweek win over Barcelona.

There was no place in the squad, though, for Yaya Toure, despite his apology for criticism aimed at the manager by his agent Dimitri Seluk.

City dominated the opening half, but had to be patient in the face of some resolute defending and inspired goalkeeping by ex Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Valdes was helpless two minutes before half-time as Aguero nipped in between two defenders for the opening goal. Navas nearly added a second with the last kick of the half, as his rising drive hit the outside of the near post.

Middlesbrough, who lacked any kind of attacking intent in the first half, began the second more positively.

Guardiola's team battled to reassert themselves, without regaining their first-half levels of superiority.

City could have made sure of victory, with Aguero missing a good chance to make certain of victory has he floated a shot wide

from a Navas pull-back, and De Bruyne blazing over after Valdes had failed to gather a long cross on the edge of his penalty area.

In other Matches, Crystal Palace suffered a fourth succes-sive defeat when they lost 3-2 to a last-minute goal at Burnley after fighting back from two goals down yesterday.

The home side scored twice in the opening quarter of an hour through Welsh international Sam Vokes and Iceland's Johann Berg Gudmundsson, though goal-keeper Steve Mandanda was at fault for the second.

Substitute Connor Wickham pulled a goal back for the Lon-don side with his first touch and Christian Benteke converted a penalty for handball.

Burnley, however, secured a comfortable mid-table spot with a dramatic winner in stoppage time by Ashley Barnes.

A late equaliser by Bojan Krkic continued Stoke City's improved run with a 1-1 draw at West Ham United on Saturday.

After a dull first half, West Ham manager Slaven Bilic sent on substitutes Ashley Fletcher and Edimilson Fernandes and soon afterwards Dimitri Payet's cross finished up in the net.

Michail Antonio thought he had scored it but the official ver-dict was an own goal by Stoke's Glenn Whelan.

Bojan Krkic equalised after West Ham goalkeeper Adrian, having a poor match, came out of his goal and failed to claim the ball.

Mourinho's United seek Swansea boost ManchesterAFP

Manchester United are in need of a lift as they travel to Swansea, but

must seek it without the pres-ence of their manager Jose Mourinho on the touchline.

Mourinho must watch from the stand at the Liberty Stadium tomorrow, having been given a one-match ban for confronting referee Mark Clattenburg at half-time during last weekend's goalless draw with Burnley.

These are not happy times for the United manager, who was fined £8,000 ($10,000, €9,000) for that incident, and ordered to pay another £50,000 for comments made about another referee, Anthony Tay-lor, before the goalless draw at Liverpool on October 17.

Mourinho has become embroiled in controversies off the field as his team labour on it. In the Premier League, United have dropped to eighth place after going four matches without a win

and three without a goal.In the Europa League, they

are in danger of being elimi-nated at the group stage, falling to third place in their section fol-lowing Thursday's 2-1 defeat by Fenerbahce in Istanbul. The concern for United is that they are not scoring despite domi-nating the ball; they had 72 percent possession against Burnley, and 70 percent in Turkey.

It does not help that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is going through one of the worst goalscoring

spells of his career. He has gone six league matches without scoring for the first time since December 2007.

The one positive attacking note in the last week was Wayne Rooney's spectacular consola-tion goal against Fenerbahce, his first since August. nited will def-initely be without Ander Herrera at Swansea as he serves a one-match ban incurred for a sending off against Burnley. They may also be missing his fellow midfielder Paul Pogba, who limped off against Fenerbahce.

Those concerns will not, though, signal a quick return to the team for Bastian Schwein-steiger, who has only just rejoined first-team training this week after being cast aside fol-lowing Mourinho's arrival.

Bob Bradley's appointment as Swansea manager has not stopped their slide as they have not won a single game yet this season, collecting just two points from their last nine matches, and sit next to bottom of the table.

Exhausted Atletico lose to Sociedad

Southgate might reject England job LondonReuters

England's interim man-ager Gareth Southgate has cast doubt on

whether he will accept a full-time position if it is to him.

The former England Under-21 boss was put in charge for four matches after the scandalous sacking of Sam Allardyce.

"I think when you are in the position I am in you need to be clear of what is being asked," Southgate told a Foot-ball Journalism degree class at the University of Derby.

"There is a big difference, for example, between being asked to take the team over the summer or to take the team for three years or take the team for a year and a half.

"I don't think it is as easy as saying, 'yes I would like the job'. I would also like to see how it is affecting my family and my health probably," said Southgate.

Southgate is left with two games in charge Scotland in a World Cup qualifierand a friendly against Spain.

Atletico Madrid's La Liga title hopes suffered another serious setback

as two Real Sociedad penalties inflicted a 2-0 defeat on them yesterday.

Carlos Vela opened the scoring nine minutes into the second-half before handing responsibilities from the spot to Willian Jose to seal Socie-dad's third straight win 15 minutes from time.

A second league defeat in three games means Atletico remain three points behind league leaders Real Madrid, but their city rivals can extend that advantage to six when they host Leganes on Sunday.

Atletico host Real in a rematch of the Champions League final after the interna-tional break on November 19.

Sociedad dominated pos-session in the opening 20 minutes, but it was Atletico who had the best chance before half-time when Kevin Gameiro was played in by Yan-nick Carrasco and was unfortunate to see his chip over Geronimo Rulli come back off the post.

A tight game swung deci-sively Sociedad's way when left-back Yuri burst into the box just after the break and was upended by Atletico cap-tain Gabi. Vela stepped up to coolly sent Jan Oblak the wrong way for his fourth goal of the season.

Vela was also key for the second goal as he led another break and was chopped down by Angel Correa.

Jose also sent the helpless Oblak the wrong way from the spot to move Sociedad to within two points of Atletico in sixth.

Iraq's Air Force Club clinch AFC Cup

The Peninsula

Hammadi Ahmed scored the only goal of the game as Air Force Club became the first Iraqi club to

claim an AFC Cup title with a 1-0 win over India’s JSW Bengaluru in the 2016 final yeserday at the Qatar SC Stadium.

Hammadi scored in the 70th minute from close-range to secure the trophy for the Iraqi side, who had become the sec-ond club from their nation to appear in the AFC Cup final after Arbil finished as runners-up in the 2012 and 2014 editions.

Played out in front of a lively contingent of supporters, many of whom had travelled from India to support Bengaluru, Air Force Club edged an even opening exchange with Amjed Radhi curl-ing a free-kick narrowly wide inside the quarter-hour mark.

The Iraqis found the crucial

goal with 20 minutes remaining as Ahmed Kahdim picked out Radhi on the edge of the area, the Iraq international delightfully dancing past three defenders on his way into the box before squaring for Hammadi to fire home his 16th of the tournament.

Radhi then thought he had gone from provider to goalscorer shortly after when Emad Mohsin played him in, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

As time ran out, Bengaluru struggled to create opportunities for the leveller with CK Vineeth failing to connect with Cameron

Watson’s free-kick on 89 min-utes and, despite their increasing desperation, the I-League side were unable to find a way through and Air Force Club held on to claim an historic victory. The Iraqi club collected $1m while Bengaluru got half of that amount.

Magnificent Murray on top of the worldParis AFP

Britain's Andy Murray became the new world number one yesterday after Milos Raonic withdrew from

their Paris Masters semi-final because of injury.

The walkover will see Mur-ray, 29, move to the top of the rankings for the first time in his career after replacing long-time incumbent Novak Djokovic.

The Scot's climb to the ATP rankings' summit caps a remark-able year which has seen him win a second Wimbledon crown and mount a successful defence of his Olympic title in Rio.

"I think that's the most sat-isfying thing, really. It's been such a difficult thing to do dur-ing my career because of how

good the guys around me have been, the guys ahead of me," said Murray.

"Obviously it's unfortunate the way that it happened today. I would have liked to have done it on the court, but it's been many years of work to get here.

"I never thought I'd be No. 1 in the world and never imagined that was something that was going to happen."

Murray had needed to reach the final to supplant Djokovic at the top following the Serb's defeat to Marin Cilic in the last eight. But he didn't need to hit a single ball as Raonic announced his withdrawal in a hastily-arranged press conference.

Raonic said he had suffered a muscle tear in his right leg in his previous match, sending Murray through to face John Isner in today's final.

"This morning I had trouble waking up and getting out of bed," said Raonic, who hurt him-self in Friday's quarter-final win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

"I had some tests and an MRI half an hour ago and they found that I have a tear, Grade 1 tear in the right quad.

"Unfortunately, I'm not able to compete against Andy today in the second semi-final."

Murray will be confirmed as the new number one -- the 26th different player in history to hold top spot -- when the latest rank-ings are released on Monday.

He is the oldest first-time number one since 30-year-old John Newcombe of Australia in June 1974.

Djokovic, whose 122-week reign at the top is set to come to an end, praised Murray's remarkable rise which coincided with a tumultuous second half of the year for the Serb.

"He's definitely a player who deserves that. Undoubtedly

much respect for what he has done," said Djokovic.

"To see how he has raised his level in the last 12 months is quite extraordinary."

Murray will meet Isner as he targets a maiden Paris Masters title after the big-serving Amer-ican toppled Cilic 6-4, 6-3 in the first semi-final.

Isner, who also reached the last four in 2011, broke the ninth

seed at 4-all before serving out for the first set. Cilic sealed his place at the Tour Finals in Lon-don this week and then snapped a 14-match losing run against Djokovic, but the Croat couldn't maintain that level against Isner.

The American seized control again at 3-3 in the second set and inflicted his first defeat on Cilic in seven attempts with another break of serve.
