AdoptionPossibilitiesThereareonlytwomajorhomesoftwarevendorsleft:QuickenandAdobe.IfbothweretoaggressivelyporttheirsoftwaretoLinux,homeuseofLinuxwouldpromptlyincreaseincrementally.Interestingly,inEurope,thestandardisthattaxsoftwareissuppliedbythegovernmentasinFinland,Denmark,andGermany. 18. Olduserswantthesamebugs.Anotherfactoristhatpeoplebecomeaccustomedtothepeculiaritiesofthedominantapplications;thesespecial characteristicsare,onsoberreflection,notatallnecessaryforfunctionalityorevenbestuse.Butreviewersoftenactasthough theyare:ifthecompetingproductdoesnotduplicatethefunctionalityofthedominantone,rightdowntothewarts,thenitssaidtobeincomplete.Windowsfaultsandpoordesigndecisionsthusbecomebenchmarksfortheignorant. 19. NewusersshallbemoreacceptingAsmorenewusersareintroductedtoLinux.Theyaretheoneswhichshallleadthetransitiontolinuxandopensource.Theyshallbeconsiderednewbiesbythenoviceusers.Thenoviceusersshallbesurprisedtohearthatthenewbiesfind Linuxtobeeasierandbetterinmanywaystotheoldsystems whichtheyareaccustomedtousing. 20. GrowthofOpenSourceIncreasing. Thegrowthofopensourcealloverisincreasingdailyand inevitablebecauseoftheattractivenessoftheLinuxplatform.Therateofitsentranceintonontechnologicalfirmswilldepend ontheinformationaboutitgettingtonontechnicalusers,who arekeptfromefficiencyandreliabilitybyignoranceofwhichtheyareunaware.StudentslikeyoucanmakethepeopleawareofthebenefitsofOpenSourceforbusinessesworldwide. 21. ManagerialIndifference Managersarelikereporters:theythinktheyruntheworld,butunfortunatelytheyhavenoexpertiseinanyoftheimportant technicalareasthatactuallymaketheworldwork.Manyrecognizethis,andfunctionwellbyconsultingexpertsandunderlingsasnecessary.Manydonotrecognizethis,andtrudgealongunawareofpowerfultoolsandtechnologythatcould maketheirenterprisesmoreefficient. 26. ManagerialIndifference Unfortunately,managerialignoranceofthepower,robustness, reliability,andsuperiormanageabilityofopensourcesoftwareandfamiliaritywiththeUnreliableDesktop,combinedwitha steadyflowoffalsityfromMicrosoftinthemedia,havemeantthatOpenSourcehashadslowgrowthinindustry.OpenSource hadadequatetoolsformostordinarybusinessneedsfiveyears ago;nowthereisnoessentialdesktopfunctionalityunavailable withintheOScommunity. 27. TwoTypesofIgnoranceCluelessnessreferstothestateofbeingignorantbutignorantly crashingalongasiffullyknowledgeable.Thisisaformof innocentignorance.Stupidityreferstothestateofignorancethatisawarethatothersholddifferentknowledgeorconclusions,butassumesthattheyaremisinformedorwrong;stupidityischaracterizedaswellbytakingunwiseactions,oftenbasedonthewrongassumptionoffullknowledge. 28. ALinuxClusterSupercomputingisimpossiblewithOperatingSystemslikeWindows. 29. IgnoranceIgnoranceisadangertoopensource,andbenefitsthemonopolist.Atonetimetheignorancethatopensourceexistswaswidespread,buttherecontinuestobeignoranceaboutthereliabilityoftheOS,availabilityoftrainingandsupport,availabilityoftools,ofthepowerandflexibilityofcollaborativedevelopment,etc. 30. IgnoranceThisisinlargepartduetotheaggressivemisinformationcampaignthatMicrosofthaswagedinthetechnicalandlaymedia.IgnoranceofOpenSourcestrengthsofcoursedelaysappropriateacceptanceandgainstractionfortheMonopolistsvendorlockgoals. 31.
