hile April can be a great month fortennis players, kayakers, fishermen, grandparents, and someone who won the state lottery, it is, with-out question, THE MONTH for golfers in this neckof the woods.
(Note: For those who don’t like golf inany form, but especially in April, survival sugges-tions follow.)
While the rest of the world considersThe Masters the official start of golf season, HiltonHead Islanders consider (as does much of theLowcountry) the little tournament in Augusta justa warm up for the REAL EVENT, The Heritage(officially, the Verizon Heritage), April 10-16.Spring flowers are usually at their finest. If some-one hears you have an extra ticket, friends younever knew you had come flocking to your door. Ifyou also happen to have entree to a skybox or hos-pitality tent (especially if there is free food), yournumber of new friends multiplies by ten fold. Theformulas look like this: additional ticket = 4 newfriends; additional ticket plus skybox pass (includ-ing free food) = 410 new friends.
Not that the Island is full of free loaders.Far from it. It would be impossible to hold TheHeritage without, quite literally, over a thousandvolunteers. All those wonderful folks who hold upthose “quiet” signs, all the folks who serve on theHeritage Classic Foundation (which, since itsfounding in 1987, has contributed over $13 mil-lion to charity!), they volunteer because they thinkit’s the “right thing to do.” Wow.
(Note: We are sponsoring a good willtour to 37 countries throughout the world whoseem to be having a variety of problems and we’relooking for volunteers. The only qualification youneed is that you are willing to hold up one of those“quiet” signs in numerous hot spots across theglobe.)
Right after that tournament in Augusta(Note: their winner’s jacket is a nice, but ratherboring, green. Ours, in contrast, is a sprightlyPLAID! I believe we’ve made our point.), ourisland is overrun with golf enthusiasts. We loveyou, we really do. But we humbly offer the follow-ing cautions and survival suggestions to three dis-tinct groups.HHOOWW TTOO SSUURRVVIIVVEE HHEERRIITTAAGGEE WWEEEEKK..
AA .. GGoollff TToouurrnnaammeenntt EEnntthhuussiiaassttss::Welcome to our island! However, remember this isOUR island. Treat it kindly. We are more than golf(though, on the whole, we love the game). Takethe opportunity to visit the Coastal DiscoveryMuseum. When you make reservations at Old FortPub, get there early and “read” the walls. Same istrue at CQ’s. You’ll soon realize this is an amazingisland! Also, tip very well. Some of us have chil-dren working at various restaurants. It goes totheir college fund.
Survival Tip: If you are in the right laneat a traffic circle, do not attempt to cross to theleft. Lowcountry “road rage” isn’t pretty.
BB .. RReessiiddeennttss ((iinncclluuddiinngg vvoolluunn--tteeeerrss)) wwhhoo lliikkee ggoollff .. Is this great or what?
Forget the dust from the buses, the few celebrantswho have celebrated a bit too much. We’re host-ing a PGA Tour event! We get to house and feedsome of the finest golfers in the world! They walkamong us. They make bogies. They make doublebogies. They three- putt on a course we may notplay very often – but we’re proud of it. Our coursechallenges, in many ways, like no other. We’re sortof like Wrigley Field. Not souped up. Just greatstuff.
Survival Tip: Call ahead for reservations.Soak up the week. That’s all you need to do.
CC .. RReessiiddeennttss wwhhoo hhaattee ggoollff.. Theremay be nothing worse than being in the presenceof a golfer, with drink in hand, who is reliving anentire round, stroke by stroke, that he/she playedat some place called Pebble Beach in 1972. Forone thing, a beach made up of pebbles is obvious-ly not conducive to getting a good tan.
Survival Tip: You can bein the North Carolina’s Blue
Ridge mountains in less than six hours.
For everyone else... enjoy the weather, enjoy the game.

Chemistry. In the day-to-day grind of individual interactions, it’seither there or it isn’t. I’ve often wondered just what exactly makestwo people create and sustain a great rapport. Is it a commonupbringing, shared goals or just mutual respect? What amazes methe most about chemistry is when the pair that exudes it is anunlikely match.
I witnessed this sort of chemistry while spending the afternoonwith Vinnie D’Annunzio (General Manager) and Frank Mottram(Executive Chef) of Antonio’s Restaurant.
Vinnie, with his in-your-face Italian heritage and charisma is usu-ally the smile you see as soon as you enter the restaurant. Frank, onthe other hand, is the “quiet one” – working behind the scenes tocreate the Mediterranean-influenced cuisine. Or at least that wasmy first impression of Frank…

VV:: “We also have tastings with the wine purveyors on a regular basis. The more we know about a wine – the vintage, region, winemaker, etc.,the easier it is to make recommendations. We also do role playing to help the staff prepare for guest issues that may arise.”
FF:: “Vinnie likes to play the angry guest whose table isn’t yet ready -even though they made a reservation.”

It is early in the morning when I arrive at theHilton Head office of Weichert, Realtors-CoastalProperties. I can’t seem to shake the feeling thatI’ve been here before, and wonder why suddenly Ifeel so hungry. A friendly face greets me at thefront counter, and smiles as I say, “I’d like to ordera three bedroom home with a two-car garage onthe side, and go ahead and throw in a large swim-ming pool with that. Oh, and I’ll take all of that“to go”. For some reason, the smiling face nowlooks confused.
Although the look of the building, once known asHardee’s, has changed dramatically from the fastfood restaurant it was before, welcoming facesremain. It has a bright, and open feel and is anideal environment for searching for the perfecthome. The head of the crew here at Weichert isthe husband and wife team of Joe and Karen Ryan, who came thirteen years ago from New Jersey aftervacationing here for several years with their fami-ly. They wanted to get away from the cold andraise their young children in a “small town” envi-ronment. They had no trouble putting behind thefast-paced city and settling down in the slower
Lowcountry. Joe, who had a background in computers andfinance, began working with a commercial real estate com-pany, while Karen put her past sales experience to good useby opening up a women’s consignment store on the island.
The growing residential home market convinced them thatit was the right time to start working together in real estate, and shortly thereafter they met with Weichert, Realtors-Coastal Properties and opened their first office in HiltonHead Island. In just a year and a half, they have grown thebusiness so much that they had to move their 90 agentsfrom an 800 square foot office to the 3500 square footspace that they call home today. They’ve also added anotheroffice in Bluffton.
Even with all that hard work, they still manage to find timeto give back to the community. Joe has taken the time to dosome little league coaching with his kids, while Karen wasjust recently named 2005 Zonta Woman of the Year, 2005Realtor of the Year, and is currently working on aChildren’s Center Capital Campaign. They know how tohave fun too. Their “Cheeseburgers In Paradise” grandopening in November unveiled the new look of the oldHardee’s building.
Joe says the best part about his job is being able to reallyhelp people. “Agents join Weichert because of their corevalues, training, and mentoring. They’re never sent outinto the market to fend for themselves. Potential real estatebuyers come to us because we put the customer first anddon’t stop working hard until they are 100% satisfied”.With that philosophy, I expect we’ll keep seeing more ofthose bright yellow signs popping up everywhere.
Frank DeTurris, Jr. came to Hilton Head in 1998 with hopes ofdoing the right thing for himself and his family. Eight years and a bouncingbaby boy later, he is now able to do the right thing for others, too. Frank isthe Vice President of Pinnacle Mortgage, Inc. at 29 Plantation Park Drive inBluffton. He is coming into his third year in the position and he couldn’t behappier.
“When I was working for other mortgage com-panies, numbers were very important. Now, everyone inthe office has the understanding that the client relation-ship comes first.”
Frank, who is like a big brother to me already(He worked with my mother for a number of years atLighthouse Mortgage), likes to be the trusted advisor. Heloves to help people through some of the biggest deci-sions of their lives. This business is perfect for him.Being the entrepreneur gives him the ability to worry about people too, notjust the numbers. Talking to customers about savings plans, proper cashallocation, and debt payment are just a few of the ways that Frank and hisstaff can help. And they really do treat you like family.
Frank tells me that it comes from the parent company and ittraces all the way back to the customer. He is allowed a great deal of free-dom when it comes to marketing, sales, programs, etc. “Things are quite abit different in the Lowcountry in comparison to New Jersey. The companyrealizes that and gives me the flexibility.”
Frank just eats up the challenge of running his own company.Whether it is being the manager, sales guy, marketer, media buyer, or adozen other hats, he’s more than willing to help. The staff is a close-knitbunch, too. “I think I talked to everyone in the office over the weekend, and it wasn’t just business.”
Pinnacle Mortgage isn’t just local either. Frank’s territo-ry is Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, plus he canwrite loans in 14 other states. I asked him how he stillmanages to do the right thing when he has so much to do,“The technology that we have in place allows me to han-dle quite a bit. We have an automated underwriting pro-gram and get quick approvals. It keeps us ahead of thegame.”
What makes Frank different from the rest of the mort-gage companies around? “You can get me on the phone.
There is always someone there who can help you.” Now that sounds like the right thing to do.

Its spring! “Yippy,” sing little robins.“Alright,” declare avid golfers. “Fantastic,”cheers a clutter closet waiting to be spring-cleaned. “Super,” exclaim beach goers.“Marvelous,” cry out my toes, “its back to flipflops and sandals. We’re free!”
Hilton Head’s springtime means longdays spent meandering on a bike from the beachto the driving range to a back-yard cookout andthe only thing you need is a smile and a pair ofdecent flip flops. But before you put on yourtrusty flops be sure to prepare your feet. It’s not
just our closets that need spring-cleaning, its our-selves.
The much overused critiques of “re-invention” or “the new you” always seem so outof place on the cover of January magazines, Ithink that the best time to start new and fresh isduring the spring. All About Me, Salon, Spa andBoutique is the ideal place to start revampingyourself for spring with head to toe treatments.
All About Me, has a unique set of salonand spa offerings catering to active islanders, laidback vacationers and small groups such as bridalparties. The shop also carries beautiful hand-made jewelry and accessories along with a fullline of 100% natural mineral makeup from, JaneIredle in addition to exclusive hair products fromAlterna, Redken and Goldwell.
Start from the bottom up, with salonowners Rebecca Halley and Rachel Jackson bothgiving a phenomenal pedicure with leg massageto sooth away your tired legs after a round ofgolf or long bike ride. Scrubbing and polishingyou with aromatic sea salts and oils, before fin-ishing your shapely toes with a bright springcolor. Tucked away in the back of the salon, thepedicure area allows you escape into serenity, but still socialize in the welcoming atmosphere.
Through a set of French doors in theboutique, is the private spa sanctuary where thefacial and massage treatments occur. The peace-ful waiting room seems miles away from thebuzz of the salon’s hair dryers and conversation. All About Me offers deep tissue and shiatsu mas-sage, hot stone therapy and reflexology to harmo-
niously refresh your mind and body. Skin caretreatments such as the power peel and oxygenfacials will rejuvenate and invigorate your skinfor spring outings, while easing you into a bliss-ful state.
With the change of season comes achange of wardrobe, mostly translating to lessclothes and more color. Such is the same forwintertime hair; punch it up with a new styleand vibrant color. Stylists Terra Tucker andJeanne Solley, who’s own hair color is dynamicand striking, will help bridge the gap from blaséponytail to an exciting new spring “do”.
The nail loft overlooking the salon iswhere you’ll want to put the finishing touches onyour restored spring-prepped self. All About Meoffers a full line of nail services from OPI,Nailtiques and Creative (I’m partial to OPI’sDutch Tulips for spring), but whether you pickyour nail color based on its name (like I do) orcoordinate with a new spring outfit, start with aparaffin treatment for younger looking and feel-ing hands. And nowhere else on the island canyou get a MD body peel to rejuvenate and stimu-late you from fingertip to elbow. All About Meisn’t just for the ladies with a MANicure, the fel-las will be set for the season too.

SSHHOOPPPPIINNGGIslanders are spoiled. Admit it, we are. If
you consider Hilton Head home for generations, years, months or even a few weeks, you’respoiled. There is no better time to witness howour island spoils us than during the springmonths. The beach is long, wide and peaceful. The sky is powder blue, streaked full of cotton-like clouds that make the sunrise over theAtlantic a magical daily occurrence and the sun-sets over Skull Creek a glowing crimson finish toa day well spent. The Carolina moon slowlybrightens up a cobalt night sky as the days growlonger and the warm weather brings out aplethora of stars. Dogwoods of pink and whitedot lush green wooded areas with vibrant lifeand azaleas in a multiplicity of colors greet youaround every corner, entranceway and front yardof the blossoming island. It’s a beautiful place.
With so much to do here, from the beaches togolf courses, shopping to playing tennis, kayakingto dining out, it’s a wonder anyone has time tomaintain the landscape. An easy, convenient andbeautiful place to start is at Avant Gardens.Owner Gayle Caporale has created an enchanti-ng space where all of your gardening and flowerarranging needs can be met with both classic andmodern flair. As the daughter of a wholesale
greenery owner, Gayle grew up with her handsin the dirt, but it took her a few years as anaccountant before she was called back to theearth, flowers and gardening. Her shop has beenon Hilton Head for eight years, growing andchanging just as the passing seasons do.
Upon entering Avant Gardens on one of thefirst warm, truly spring-like days of the season, Iwas greeted with a fantastic natural aroma offresh cut flowers. Taking it all in, I stopped for amoment to listen to the gurgling fountains andwater sculptures lining the walkway into thestore. For a moment I wasn’t in the Shelter CoveShopping Center, I was in a French provincialgarden and it took me a few steps before I real-ized that the flowers my eyes were dazzled bywere, in fact, silk and the scent that filled the airwas a nearby burning candle display. Gayle andher staff are custom silk floral arrangmentexperts who are able to intermix faux moss, exotic plants and vibrant flowers for lastingshowpieces that accentuate your home.
Avant Gardens carries a huge array of con-tainers, vases, baskets and urns for use on a patio, sunroom or porch but all are of such elegantquality they could adorn any dining room table. The shop doesn’t neglect our coastline roots and
stocks numerous island themed décor items suchas votive holders, picture books, napkin rings anddrink coasters. The selection of lovely homeaccessories, fragrant candles and skin carelotions for avid gardeners make it difficult to pickjust one thing as a gift so Avant Gardens is awonderful place to put together a gift basket.
As an authorized Smith and Hawken retailer,Gayle is able to offer the finest in gardening tools, accessories and products to expand your outsidespace and make your time spent in the gardenmore pleasurable and productive. The collectionof birdhouses, rain gauges, stone statues andhummingbird feeders make perfect additions toany green space; Avant Gardens also sells “BirdGirl,” the bird feeder by artist Sylvia ShawJudson made famous on the book cover of“Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”.
In general, we are spoiled on this island by itslasting beauty, long season of warmth andgrowth and for clever shops like Avant Gardens, keeping us all manicured and landscaped withpanache, elegance and passion.

It’s springtime at Pedals Bicycles and thatmeans lots of work to be done at the Pope Avenuestore. With the warm weather coming, businesswill be picking up and there are hundreds ofbicycles that have been unused all winter to becleaned up, checked over, and sent out to rent toour visitors.
But rentals aren’t the only side to Pedals’ busi-ness. In addition to the used rental bikes for sale, the store is crammed full of shiny new bicycles ofall shapes and sizes, and every accessory onecould need or think of. From locks—an unfortu-nate necessity even on safe Hilton Head—to bas-kets and bags, cycle computers to car racks,Pedals has what you need.
The most popular bikes for island cycling arebeach cruisers, balloon-tired bikes with widehandlebars, big comfy seats, and an upright seat-ing position for touring our beachesand bike paths in style. The cruisershave a retro vibe, and are availablein many colors and styles from plainblack single-speeds to flame-paintedchopper-style bikes with internalgearing. What’s internal gearing, youmay ask? Instead of having the gearsand shifting mechanism on the out-side, where they are vulnerable tothe sand and salt from our miles ofbeaches, all the com-ponents are sealedinside the rear hub. That way, you can takeyour multi-speed bicy-cle on the beach with-out fear of destroyingall those little parts!
Looking for some-
thing a little faster? More aggressive, perhaps?Pedals also stocks a full range of mountain bikesand hybrid bikes. Mountain bikes feature tough, knobbly tires and front suspension to take youover all those off-road bumps without getting anybumps of your own. Hybrid bikes are a combina-tion cycle, with a narrower road tire, 21 or 24speeds to tackle that cross-island bridge, but anupright seating position so you don’t have tostrain your back while getting your workout. Forthe Lance Armstrongs among us, road bikes arealso available, and if Dave Mirra is your idea of acompetitive biker, Pedals sells Haro BMX bikes aswell.
The latest thing at Pedals is a bike called theElectra Townie. Designed for those of us whohaven’t ridden a bike in years or just don’t feelthat secure anymore, the Townie’s pedals are set
forward so that you canstop and immediately placeyour feet flat on theground, while still gettingproper leg extension whenyou’re pedaling. Pedalsplans to feature someTownies in the rental fleetthis year, and they’ve beenthe hottest item on the salesfloor.
We think you’ll agreethat the best way to seeHilton Head Island is froma bicycle, and Pedals has abike for everyone!
At no time of the year is golf morewidespread than on Hilton Head Islandin April. The Verizon Heritage of GolfTournament descends upon our littleIsland, bringing with it several well-known golfers and thousands of golfenthusiasts. Even before I started golfing,I was sure to make an appearance atThe Heritage every year. I expect withmy newfound hobby I’ll have even moreappreciation for the game and be sureto pick up a few tips by watching thepros carefully.
Many April visitors come not only towatch the tournament, but to play aswell, on the fabulous courses HiltonHead is known for. As the most famouscourse is unavailable this week, I wouldlike to suggest an alternative: TheGeorge Fazio course in Palmetto Dunes. This beautiful and challenging coursehosted our most recent golfing expedi-tion.
Upon arrival, what really impressed mewas the warm welcome from every staffmember. After playing many of theIsland’s courses, I find that the mostmemorable experiences weren’t neces-sarily based on how well I played, orhow perfect the greens were (becauselet’s face it – Hilton Head courses aregenerally in great condition) but howfriendly and helpful the staff was. Theteam at the Fazio course, under HeadProfessional Samm Wolfe’s leadership, gets an A+. We especially enjoyed chat-ting with Tay from Pennsylvania while
we waited to tee off on the first hole. The course itself was in pristine condi-tion. I tend to lose many a ball to thelagoons and the alligators that dwellwithin, so I’m happy to say that veryfew of the holes had water hazards, which helped my game immensely!Holes 3 and 7 run parallel to each otherand while on the seventh Becky and Iboth managed to slice, ending up in themiddle of the 3rd Hole. The gentlemenon the third graciously let us interrupttheir game to get back on course (liter-ally). They also offered to give us a fewpointers while they watched – even thegolfers on Fazio are friendly! Jean had abit of a set-back on the 7th, losing herball in a large green Palmetto bush (notthe actual name of this foliage…). Somuch for “lucky” number seven.
So to all you golf enthusiasts, expertsand beginners here for the month ofApril: Revel in all the golf excitementthe Island has to offer. Well it is true…there is a tool or device tomake all aspects of life better in someway….a device to aid you in some fash-ion…my latest discovery (although thesefolks have been around for over ten years) isLowCountry Solar, Storm & Security WindowFilm (LowCountry Film). Don & Mary LouWesthoven have sunscreen for your house.Think Ray Ban’s for your windows.
Their window films are unique - multiplelayers of strong clear, special grade Mylarpolyester bonded together with special adhe-sives and finished with a durable, scratch-resistant coating. No matter the property, whether small business, commercial sky-scraper, or traditional home, LowCountryFilm’s Llumar-Dupont Film delivers immedi-ate benefits. Once fitted to windows and glassdoors – it offers sunscreen-like protection toeverything inside.
Window films also protect from damagecaused by hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakesand windstorms and will withstand 145 mphwinds. Since the shattered glass is heldtogether better with window film, the threatof injury from flying glass shards is reduced.
Are you concerned with smash and grab atyour home or business? An alarm systemmay sound the police; but, how long will ittake for the police to respond in your neigh-borhood? Why not keep the bad guys out of
your home or business by installing securityfilm on your glass? Safety and security filmshelp deter would-be thieves by withstandingblows that would shatter untreated glass.
LowCountry Film’s products block almost100 percent of damaging ultraviolet rays, keeping your expensive furnishings and art-work safe from fading and deteriorating. Thesolar control series can reject up to 79 per-cent of total solar energy, helping to reduceenergy and HVAC expenses. Most existinginstallations have seen savings so great thatusing the window film has paid for itself injust two years.
So you’ve spent a ton of money on yourfabulous windows or oceanfront views – start enjoying the view without the heat andblinding light, by calling LowCountry Solar,Storm & Security Window Film today for afree consultation. They will provide you witha sample by applying the film on your actualwindow. Just as you sample paint colors, youshould sample the different shades availablefor your windows. Once you’ve decided whatworks best, your job can be completed in aday or two.LLoowwCCoouunnttrryy SSoollaarr,, SSttoorrmm && SSeeccuurriittyy FFiillmm((884433)) 226633--FFIILLMM ((33445566))((884433))778855--8877777711--886666--335544--FFIILLMM ((33445566))

We are selling more Bluffton and DaufuskieIsland properties right now and they tend to be less expensive. My feelingis that we will have another great year. However, villa sales may be a littlesoft as it’s been the busiest part of the marketplace here for the past several years and the inventory of villas for sale has recently increaseddramatically.”

I don’t believe we are at great risk here in Southern Beaufort County. While there has been a terrific amount of appreciation in the last fewyears, it hasn’t been disproportionate to the value. In spite of what somepeople think, our prices are still reasonable when compared to the areas at risk.
Also, regardless of pricing people just want to be here. The lifestyle, natural beauty, temperate climate and world-class amenities are hard tobeat anywhere.”

As therates go up, so do the monthly payments on the principal balance.Presently the buyer’s dollars go further than they will in the near future. In other words, buyers get more house now for the monthly paymentrequired.
Another good reason to buy now is selection. Last year there werefar fewer properties for sale. Some areas in the local resorts didn’t haveany property for sale. This was especially true in the villa market. Today buyers have choice.”

BBii ll ll :: “Dunes Marketing offers Home Warranties for both buyers and sellers. The policy covers the Seller during the listing period and covers theBuyer for one year after closing on their new property. While the policyhas some limitations, most of the items that usually fail in a home are covered. There is a small deductible but essentially the insurance companyarranges for the repairs to be quickly completed and pays for same.
Home Warranties are good for both sellers and buyers as they offer our clients piece of mind regarding the condition of their properties.” DDuunneess MMaarrkkeettiinngg GGrroouupp DDiirreeccttoorr ooff SSaalleess && MMaarrkkeettiinngg BBiill llBBaallddwwiinn hhaass oovveerr 2255 yyeeaarrss ooff eexxppeerriieennccee iinn tthhee LLoowwccoouunnttrryyrreeaall eessttaattee mmaarrkkeett ..

Ann Hayes, New Owner of Bruster’s
I just so happen to know that Bruster’s almostalways has about 25 different flavors to choose
from. And it’s made fresh every day, whichmeans fewer preservatives and more of thegoodness we love! Bruster’s doesn’t just sell
ice cream either. They make shakes, sundaes, blasts, cakes, and pies! Just talking about this is making my dieting power weaken.
Oh wait, I forgot about their no-sugar-added, fat-free
and low-carb flavors! Yay! I’m saved!
It also has an awesome location! It is in Shelter Cove Plaza(next to Guiseppi’s),
just a minute away from the mall! The new owner of Bruster’s, Ann Hayes,
is really looking forward to the coming ice cream season
and so am I! SShheelltteerr CCoovvee PPllaazzaa,, SSttee BB

I know what you’re thinking; “It’s only April, why are we talking about ice cream already?”My answer to that would have to be - Hilton
Head. It’s hot here almost all of the time! But besides that, ice cream was destined to
be enjoyed year round! After all who doesn’tlike to snuggle up on the couch watching
movies with a pint of their favorite ice cream in hand? And even better than that, is
getting a pint of fresh creamy ice cream from a local ice cream shop. Bruster’s
has about a gazillion flavors (okay maybe less) to choose
from to put on cones or in pints, quarts,
or gallons!
