〈Home〉2010

The place I stayed for 40 weeks. Not once did I ever try to come out because I was indulged in this place, and because I needed this place. This place fed me, I was dependent on it, I even breathed through it. This place was my first home, and I define this felling as “being at home.”

What is pot earth?

The time when i begin to understand pot earth. I think it is unstable and contradict.

Which symbol could you use to describe “Pot Earth”?

Presenting the wok with personification. Through my work, I would like man to identify pot earth. It is a product with process, thus it has forms. With its forms, I soaked it into the water, which made people observe how the earth could dissolve within the water.

Transition process of transition present the story in progress with different stages of work

Subject X Trasition

Necessary process

Based on the fundamental prototype, but presented in different forms

We cannot define what is or what is not necessary during the process, because all the processes have their own meanings.

Why would I choose “Transition” as my subject?

I was in a transition, thus I understand that all phases may seem different, but they connect. In addition, through this progress, the transformation begins but not with mutation.

Why would I choose to present the wok in three pieces?

I want to present the work so that people could see the connection and transformation within the process.

Questions

Does the connection present order, or the positive and negative side of people?

It is presented in the order of time, but I do not define the beginning. It all depends on the point of view of people, which also brings out the both sides of human beings.

When we say that this is a transition period, we know there will be breakthrough afterwards. This is just an intermediate process, and that is what we call a transitional period. Through this piece of art, viewers can see a process made up of stories, and we begin to think about which stage of the transitional period they are in, and what will they become after that.

Through this piece of art, I want to experiment by using an art that is less emotional in order to interact with the audience. For me, I want to give the viewer questions, by standing on my own stage and leaving some space for the viewer to observe. Finding questions are great, but the process to find the answers is more fascinating. Through gradual art, there is no exact beginning and end, before and after, or forward and backward. The viewers can find their own statements, and point out their direction of the answer. Finding is a process, but each step is worth being expected.

When the viewer or even I began to face our own problems and began to walk out to search for our next step, this process will help people discover transformation. After walking out of the shell, the surroundings will be totally different. Although they are unfamiliar, the journey before the breakthrough is not suffering, it is transition.

The Truth Republic (Plato): The fable in the cave

The Truth

Man who does not believe what he saw

Man who could see it, and mistake it for something else

Man who could not see

Which reality should I describe?

The truth and illusion in the fableThe truth does exist, but due to man’s behaviour and interpretation, it has different standards.

Which symbol should I use to describe it?

The glass is a medium in the adjustment. It made man see everything clearly. From blurry to clearThrough it, I present the illusion and the truth.

QuestionsHow to make man see the truth with the medium?

Through the colour filter method, my work presented the difference between what one sees and the truth of what it really is.

tension of art

To me, what's the difference between ceramic and clay ?

One with tension that is too real to exist and bring out the inspiration and response. The other needs to coexist with life in order to bring out the beauty in the truth.

Thus what “word” could I use to describe my work?

“Conflict”

QuestionsWhat “element” should I use to bring out the “conflict”?

In my concept, I think I can use “hub” as my element. It is a tool that could simplify our daily supplies. Thus, it could be put to more use in the artistic world.

The concept

A choice that has to be made by everyone

The choice of an eagle: should it wound its beak and die: Yes

My final answer was present as the eagle bumped against the cliff with a man on its back.

How does the story make a huge impact on me?

In life, we could choose to avoid a lot of things; but through the story of an eagle, we learnt that some choices are a matter of life and death. What is the connection between the eagle and myself?

The price of making a decision is the breakthrough that I think man should to experience. When the price concerns life and death, I should make the same choice as the eagle. I should not run from it; but through my work, we could understand what the price I will have to pay, if I choose.

QuestionsWhy did I chose to present the work as half of a man’s body in the wall?

It is the expectation that I have to my work as to myself. As this is the matter of life and death, I hope that through high morals, and the gesture of riding to war, I could run through the wall.

Subject X The connection between the story and myself

When I learnt about the story of how an eagle faces its death, I started to think of the connection between myself and the story.“Face”: a choice that has to be made at every stage

I t represen t s a man riding to war on horseback.

〈The wall I bump against is not just a wall〉2013

With the passing of age, my beak has grown long and it has curved. All I have are two choices, I could use all my strength to fly and bump against the cliff until I wound my beak and die. Or, I could wait till my beak grows long and curves enough to impale my chest. Thus the choices are, being reborn or wait to die.The wall I bump against is not just a wall, and the beak I wound is not my beak.

Or, it could wait until its beak grows long and curves enough to impale its chest. Thus the choices are, being reborn, or wait to die.

At every stage of life, there is a moment that we have to strike. To me, those moments are not as easy as they appear because they present challenges. To an eagle, it could just be a wall; but to a person, every wall is different, and has its own meaning. At that moment, the wall I bump against is not just a wall, and the beak I wound is not my beak.

The concept

The result through the e x p e r i m e n t c o u l d b e quite interesting. Through these results, we could understand the conflict between the materials

Conflict

shattered and tough

If a process is not just a process, what is it?ow does the story make a huge impact on me?

I think the meaning of the word “process” means it is not finished, it cannot happen independently, and it cannot represent as any results. Thus, in my work, to me, the process is not just a process; it is an attempt, a try. It is an existence that should not be neglected, nor should it be taken lightly. Does it seem complete if I presented it in the whole?

I do not think to present the whole work as a work completed. I think my final experiment has a flaw. However, the work I presented is a work in the whole.but through my work, we could understand what the

QuestionsWhy do I choose to present it this way?

At first, I was expected to present the conflict between the experimented materials, but in the end, I would like to present the “process”. In result, I found that all processes have their own conflicts; therefore, I think this is a better way to present my work.

What do I see through the conflict between materials? I think I could make people think and realize?

In truth, I did not think of realization at first, but at the end, the way I presented the work made people notice the process, and not just the result, which I think it is quite interesting. I think it is also one’s point of view of life. However, to me it is somehow ironic, because all I have focused on is the result.

Subject X RelationshipThings we cannot see or invisible

Supplier and demander

A small but huge conversation

What kind of relationship do I want to describe?

IThe relation between the Creator and man

Why would I choose to present the wok in three pieces?

Through the irreplaceable element: oxygen. My work starts as the invisible, odorless, the product of nature - tree.

Questions

How do I use and transform this symbol - tree?

Based on the basic element of a tree - root. I used the invisible, and yet one of the suppliers of life.

the most important relationship in life

Page 39: PAN,YU-CHIEH profolio

39

Based on the roots, I tried to find another similar material.

Through experiments, I found that after soaked it in water, rope could become curly and rough.

After the proper procedure, the rope could look similar to a tree, becoming the same structure as the branch, and becoming as strong as the tree. Another method (like encircle) might reduce the tension in vision.

2013

Due to some personal reasons, the final picture of this work was not taken. However, I quite enjoyed the process of creating this work. The whole concept and the time I put into this work was one of my favourite moments. Through this work, I started to think of the power of rising from down to up, and the lack of tension. This could be mended and from now on, I could think of the things that we could not see, and yet is the most important element of life.

The concept

Fragile

through the process, there were some failures, and a lot my pieces were shattered. Thus, after I successfully completed the work, it became hard as a rock, and yet I still deemed it as something fragile.

What kind of work would I like to create in the contradiction?

I want to keep the double qualities in contradiction.

What i s the resu l t I was expected through the experiment in the work of “The beauty of Contradiction”?

For example: the insecurity and stability, fragile and strong. These are the main reasons that affect me the most.

Questions

Thick

Subject X Feelings toward the material

I want to present a work that cou ld express my feelings toward the material- ceramic I have a lot of experiences with different kind of

materials, and ceramic gave me an image as a hard, steady and irreplaceable material. However, through the process, I felt contradicted, and with high sense of insecurity.

It was hard and yet fragile, along with the contradiction between the process and the result. It illustrates the different affections between the writer and the reader.

Are these affects good or bad?

This could be an influence to my work. I expect it to be wonderful. Although, this is something I am trying to overcome.

Page 42: PAN,YU-CHIEH profolio

〈The beauty of contradiction〉2013

Man’s weight could sometimes be light and sometime be heavy; just the same as how man feels toward the ceramic; it could sometimes be light and sometime be heavy as well. But the words “light” and “heavy” are with opposite meanings, the instability and the confusion is what man feels toward the ceramic. The measurement is between the creator and the viewer. Man could be in contradiction, but the fundamental of ceramic is still the same.

The harvest of man

Subject X Final project

Harvest:the beginning that seems to be the end. Difficult circumstances

and process

My work was inspired from one of the twelve points of the traditional Asian Lunar Calendar - Shuangjiang. Shuangjiang are the dates between the 23rd to the 24th of October every year. According to the calendar, these are the dates of the last harvest of the year. These dates are also near winter, and the last dates for the crops to survive.

the joy that came from the difficulty of process

What do I want to present this as my last work using ceramic before graduation?

This is the blessing for my life after graduation; and the thing that I want to hold on to for life. What kind of message or symbol do I want to use for description?

There are two reasons why I want to create my work with height. One of them is because it could reflect on man’s height in order to point out the object I want to present, and the other is because it could be self challenged.

QuestionsWhat kind of message or symbol do I want to use for description?

I chose the word “harvest” for the description. To me, it contains different meanings, one is the beginning that seems to be the end; the other is the difficulty and pleasure during the moment of the harvest.

〈The harvest before Shuangjiang (solar term)〉2014

The condensation of humid air in cold conditions, frost form from dew; this is moment we called, Shuangjiang (solar term). The affection I got from the last harvest before winter, is when the weather started to coagulate and freeze, and yet men still work hard in this dreadful conditions and receive the harvest.

Although man may think that it is the most difficult period in ones’ life; however, the moment to harvest and the moment before the harvest are the most important time in my life, and is also my belief that carries me through the dreadful conditions.

This idea was gained from the experiment. This is the main reason that I like Art. Through every stage of creation, I could remind myself and discover something new in myself.

Through experimenting, I present the beauty from a huge amount of accumulation. Through association, it was linked to the beehive. Thus, I started my research and I found that it is not just the amount of accumulation from the surface; it is also the amount of accumulated quality. It does not matter if it is from nature by choice, or the evolution of change, it made me see the “beauty” and “amount” behind the accumulative quality.

Accumulation - never be blind in pursuit, the accumulation of wisdom, more than what one has accumulated.Accumulation - when blind, to accumulate for accumulation is not accumulation.

There are many materials that could be representative of my creation, and I thought that “Embroidery” could be appropriate. It is an art that is presented with line, and it can be an appropriate element to present my concept and resemble my creation.
