PAPER PRESENTATION COMPETITION

GUIDE BOOK

Participants: High School and Undergraduate Students

Quota: Max 30 Individual Participants

Dress code : Semi-Formal attire (1st day Batik Semi Formal) (2nd

day Semi Formal)

Venue : FISIP UIN Jakarta, Jl. Kertamukti No. 05 Pisangan, Ciputat,

Jakarta Selatan

Background

As the next generation, youth is considered as the key of the progress

of a civilization; with youth’s contribution we can improve the quality of a

society. This is what makes youth required to think more critically and be

aware of every problem that is faced by their countries, or even the global

society. For example, in order to face global issues, youth is asked to be able

to overcome these problems. Especially in dealing with humanity issues that

is really crucial, youth should have a voice that can help find solutions which

can uphold and resolve these problems.

There are three humanity issues we will focus on in this occasion, first

is cyber human trafficking, second is food shortage, and the last is

misconceptions by native people against immigrants. These three issues have

different level of urgency, but we must admit that as the future of this

generation we must contribute to solve these problems together..

Coming from the demand of youth awareness on global humanity

issues, Research and Development Division of International Relations Student

Associations (HIMAHI) State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah

Jakarta, will be holding an event, International Relations Championship

(IRON 2017). This event has three competitions; one of it is Paper

Presentation.

Main Theme and Sub-Themes

Main Theme of IRON 2017: “Millennials Role to Uphold Humanity”

The sub-themes of the competition cover three of the areas of humanity

issues, thus:

a. Resolving Cyber Human Trafficking in Modern World

b. Alternative Way to Strengthen Food Security despite the Increase

of Population

c. Breaking Discrimination and Misconception About Immigrants

Caused by the Stigma of Native People

With the following choices of sub-themes, there is one simple question that is

compulsory to be answered in your essay.

How can we, as a millenials, make an impact in the matter

you have chosen?

Eligibility

All students with active ID cards of their respective educational

institutes (both public and private High School or Varsity students) are

allowed to participate in Paper Presentation IRON 2017.

One eligible educational institution may send MORE THAN ONE

participants.

Registration and Payment Procedure

1. Registration for this event can be done by downloading the registration

form in the link www.iron-uinjkt.weebly.com and submitting to our

email:[email protected] NO LATER than 6th of May

2017 with Competition_Name_University/High School as the

subject format

(ex: Paper Competition_Nisrina Nafisah_UIN Syarif Hidayatullah

Jakarta)

2. After registration form is submitted, payment of registration fee: Rp.

125,000.- can be done to Bank Account (1640001770223 p.p

Winda Shabrina Adani, Bank Mandiri).)

3. Participants who have paid the registration fee should send the scan or

photo of their payment receipt and the scan or photo of their student

card to:[email protected]

General Procedure Guide of Paper

Presentation Competition

1. Registration for this event can be done by following the registration

and payment procedure above.

2. After the registration and payment is completed, kindly send the essay

of your chosen sub theme with a minimum length of 2500 words and

must not exceed 4000 words (excluding the cover content) in either

formal English or Indonesian vocabulary to [email protected]

with the format in PDF no later than 6th May 2017.

3. Only 10 participants who qualify in the preliminary presentation round

based on the judging of the essay will be eligible for the finals in IRON

2017.

4. The final presentation on the day of the competition should be in

Power Point slides format and has to be in English.

5. Presenter should be in their formal attire during the presentation

6. Participants who are through to the final 10 round have to attend the

Technical Meeting which will be informed by the committees.

7. Maximum total presentation time is 20 minutes with 15 minutes of

paper presentation and 5 minutes of Q&A session.

8. Late attendance during the day of the event will receive 10 points

deduction

9. The judges will only choose 3 best presenters who will win the prizes.

Paper Specifications

1. The subject for the essay (and oral presentation) is to

be determined by the participant from the two available themes

that have been provided.

2. Essay can be written in either ENGLISH or INDONESIAN

3. The essay should be no longer than 4000 words and

should contain minimum 2500 words.

4. Essay should be original and any form of plagiarism and cheating

WILL NOT be tolerated and will be DISQUALIFIED without refund.

5. The submitted essay should also include keywords and proper title,

references that is added using APA style format and should also be

included in the Bibliography.

6. Basic footnotes, Bibliography, titles, subtitles will not be

counted as part of the word limit.

7. Explanatory footnotes must be included in the word limit

The essay should follow the following format:

Font : Tahoma, 12

Space : 1.5

Margin: Top and Bottom (3cm) Left (4cm) Right (3cm)

Paper Size : A4

8. Guide for structure which essays are generally

written in:

o Cover

o Declaration that the following essay is original and that

the length is between 2500-4000 words. (Better to

specifically state the exact length)

o Introduction : Brief summary of the main

topics/argument/points made in the essay

o Body Paragraph :

- Topic Sentence 1 : elaborated with

argument/explanation that supports and explain the

point made in the topic sentence 1

- Topic Sentence 2 : elaborated with

argument/explanation supports and explain the point

made in the topic sentence 2

- Continue until conclusion is reached

o Conclusion: comprised of restatements or summary of

the main point made in the body paragraph and final

comment (if appropriate).

9. Essay has to be submitted by no later than 23:59 WIB

on 6th May 2017 to [email protected] Late

submission of paper will receive penalties.*(see penalties

section)

10. Only 10 participants who qualify in the preliminary presentation round

based on the judging of the essay will be eligible for the finals at IRON

2017. The participants who are through will be announced (the latest)

2 days before the technical meeting. (date is still tentative)

11. ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT, the qualified candidates are required to

bring along with them the following:

o One soft copy (on CD) of their essay and presentation document

o 4 hard copies of their essay.

12. One participant can only submit ONE ESSAY.

13. The decision of the judges and the event head will be treated as final

and binding on all.

Oral Presentation

1. All process of essay writing and preparation of oral

presentation must be conducted solely by the participant.

Although they may receive advice and assistance in advance

with their presentation skills and style.

2. Presenter should be in their formal attire during the presentation

3. The presentation will consist of two parts:

a. First, the participant will present their paper without

interruption for 10-15 minutes. Participant may start

speaking when green card is held up. Time warnings will

be given at the following intervals:

i. A knock on the table will be sounded when 10

minutes has elapsed

ii. 2 knocks on the table will be sounded when there

is 5 minutes remaining

iii. Continuous knocking will be sounded if the 15

minutes time limit has been reached.

b. Next, the judge will question the participant on their oral

presentation for 5 minutes.

4. Presentation has to be conducted and delivered in

English

5. The presentation has to be substantively based on the

essay that has been written by the participant

6. Presentation has to be in .pptx format. Or equal

format that can be opened in Microsoft Power Point.

7. The following equipment may be available for use by the

participant during the presentation:

a. An infocus connected to laptop/computer equipment for

electronic presentation.

b. A microphone.

8. The decision of the judges and the event head will be treated as final

and binding on all.

Judging

1. Every effort will be made to ensure that judges are not

biased towards the participants, for a fair and equitable

competition.

2. The judging criteria will generally consist of:

a. Depth, significance and originality of subject matter

b. The paper portion of the competition will constitute 50% of the

final score, while the oral presentation constitute the remaining

50%.

3. Judges will be provided with

a. Each participant’s hard copy of essay.

b. Score sheet.

c. A copy of Paper Presentation Competition rules and

regulations.

Penalties

The following penalties will apply:

1. Exceeding maximum word limit or failure to meet

minimum word limit will receive 2 marks reduction penalty.

2. Late submission of the written essay:

a. One day late submission, participant will receive 10

points reduction to their total marks

b. More than one day late, essay will not be accepted and

refund will not be given.

3. Late attendance during the day of the event will receive

2 points reduction per 5 minutes lateness to their total marks.

4. Participants, who do not turn up at all during the day of

the competition, will be considered as forfeiting and refund will

not be given.

5. The head of the event and the permitted committees

has the discretion as to the deduction of marks if there are

violations of rules.

6. There will be point deduction for those who did

not attend Technical Meeting (one institution may send

only the Representative to attend Technical Meeting).

Forfeiture

Any participants who forfeits are deemed to be out of the competition

and to have a mark zero.
