Men's Hostel in need of belts
We are so thankful for the many gifts of socks and underwear, but did you know we have a real shortage of another clothing item we don’t often talk about – belts! We have over 1,000 men who stay with us at our Emergency Homeless Shelter. We provide thousands of pairs of socks, underwear, and lots of other donated clothing. However, we don’t see nearly enough belts, something that is quite important to a man’s wardrobe. Any and all sizes welcome. Please bring them to the Men’s Hostel at 828 Cambie Street Downtown, but if you cannot then please bring items to the John Paul II Pastoral Centre
Catholic Teachers Needed
The Catholic Independent Schools of the Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA) representing 40 elementary schools and seven high schools, is accepting applications for teaching positions. Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the CISVA website, www.cisva.bc.ca, to view available postings for September 2018. Our Catholic schools are dynamic, faith-filled communities that provide high-quality Catholic education in our Archdiocese. We ask all parishioners to seek out and invite qualified and talented individuals, those living in B.C., across Canada, and abroad, to consider opportunities in teaching in CISVA.
Stewardship Reflections
“And Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has made
you well.’ And immediately he received his sight and
followed him on the way.” MARK 10:52
Faith is believing in something even though you may not be able to see it. Many people think that miracles don’t happen anymore. But, if you focus on the positive, not the negative, focus on your blessings instead of your hardships, miracles
will seem common and you will see God’s active presence in your daily life.

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
This coming Wednesday is not only the end of the October, but Halloween. I have
included a page 4 to give a little background to that day on our calendar. There are a few things
to summarize about Halloween (and many Catholics and Christians disagree on how to keep
Halloween):
1) It is the feast of “all hollows eve.” This is really important for us Catholics to remember. The
next day is the Solemnity of All Saints. This is the day when the Church gives thanks to God for
HIS victory in the lives of the saints – those known and unknown to us. There are an untold
number of souls in heaven. They are what the Epistle to the Hebrews speaks to us about:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside
every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is
set before us..” (Heb 12:1) To celebrate, the saints give glory to God and then encourages us to
persevere in the race to eternal life. If they did it (with God’s help) you and I can do it as well.
2) It is important to be safe if you will be going out in the evening. Some people strive to
“Christianize” this day by either having private parties for their children, or if they go out
having them dressed up as saints. St Sebastian was a Roman Centurion of the Imperial Guard!
Friday is All Souls Day (Nov. 2nd). This is the day when we pray for the dead – those
who have died in Christ and are now undergoing the final purification for their sins which were
forgiven, but for which they did not do sufficient penance. This is a place of great mercy, but it
is also important to recognize that purgatory can also be accurately described as a “waste of
time”. What I mean by this is that all the souls there – while they are going to heaven – are there
because they did not use the gift of time here in this world to do penance, to offer reparation
(for their sins) in union with Christ when they could have. Let us pray for them especially, but
not only during this month. Let us resolve to use our time well, to give thanks to God, and do
penance for His merciful forgiveness of our sins.
Let us complete these days of October by way of sharpening our devotion to Mary. It is
the “Marian key” that holds the answer to ‘how do I get to heaven?’ The answer is by striving
to live the life that Mary did; “be it done to me according to Thy will.” Doing God’s will. We
can learn from her what this means in our day to day life. Pray the rosary every day; pray it …
not just saying it, but, praying it … reflecting on the mysteries of salvation and contemplating
Jesus through her eyes.
