Stewardship Reflections

““But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and

lend without expecting anything back.” (Luke 6:35)

Easier said than done, right? But, if we are to imitate Christ, most of us need to practice mercy and compassion more frequently. Start with the little daily annoyances that we

experience, the unkind word or hateful glance we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that person, try saying a quick prayer for that person. Mercy and compassion will put us on

the path to holiness.

7th Week in Ordinary Time

This week Fr. James and I will be testing the students of the

School for their Confirmation. Confirmation this year is scheduled for

May 2nd. The preparation for Confirmation entails going to Mass, this is

the first and most important thing, doing 20 hours of volunteer work,

writing Mass journals and passing this test , which is specifically on the

sacrament of Confirmation. I have said to the students for as long as I

have done this; if you study you will pass and pass easily; if you don’t

study, you’ll have a very tough time. So remember, pray and study!

Last week I spoke about selecting godparents for baptism and

their duties. This week I want to write on following through with the

responsibilities of baptism by the parents. Parents, according to Canon

Law, should have their child, or children, baptized in the first month of

birth. This is not an ideal, but the real. It really is an act of faith to have

infants baptized as soon as possible. The parents, in this parish, take a

Baptismal Preparation “Course”, which involves two sessions. Why? It

connects the couple with the parish and also gives the priest an

opportunity to meet the couple as well, in the session and also by way

of an appointment outside of the “Course”. As well, it is an opportunity

to remind parents what their duties and responsibilities are concerning

baptism. When we receive a sacrament, we are in effect, swearing an

oath, and God is also swearing an oath. God is saying to us, in effect, "I

will help you to fulfill your responsibilities, but you must ask me for

help and cooperate with me in carrying out those responsibilities; the

parents, in this case, are swearing that they will following through on

the promises they make when they have their child, or children,

baptized.

What are the promises parents make in the Rite while the

child is being readied for baptism? This is from the Rite of Baptism:

You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so, you are

accepting the responsibility of training him/her in the practice of

the faith. It will be your duty to bring him/her up to keep God’s

commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our

neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?

Like so many things, we need to unpack this so that it is really

understood. Just like the reality of having a child and raising the child

has many implications (e.g., feeding, clothing, educating, etc.), so to

when a child is baptized, the parents, or parent are promising God that

they will raise their child in the Catholic Faith. They will bring their

children to Mass, they will assume the role that is theirs, of being the

primary teacher of their child in the ways of faith. I will continue this

next week.

The present “Bible Study” is coming to a close. The next one

will begin on March 13th at 7:00pm, and take place on Wednesdays. I

will give a schedule to those who sign up. The Study this time will be

“The Mass” with Bishop Robert Barron. If you sign up on for Word on

Fire ENGAGE, you can watch the Videos, and the Course material is

there in a pdf. So, email the Rectory at [email protected], or phone in.

The Mass is the root of our spiritual lives; the more we understand the

Mass, the more we will love Jesus Christ and the more we will want to

go to Mass.

Lastly – bring your old Palms for the annual burning – to

prepare for Ash Wednesday which is on March 6th.

Fr. Hamilton

Hamilton 神父
