Do you think you have what is needed to run a company?In previous articles I have talked about how to start your own business and how to raise money to get the business off the ground so that you can reach your goals and desires.Today, we want to see if you have what is needed to survive, what is needed to run a company, what is needed to stay in the business, what is needed not to let go of your dreams, and is needed to beat all the odds.There are certain attributes and characteristics which are necessary for a business owner to survive through the storms, hard times, competitions, recessions, shortages of money, and hammering by shareholders. Truth be told, having a good time in running a business is very rare: you must be on your toes all the time and ready; you must be ahead of the competition all of the time.It is a jungle out there, one in which you either eat or are eaten.

Clarify your visionRunning a business is like climbing a mountain to the top. You have to know where you are heading. You have to see the top all the time and keep an eye on it.You have to know what it is that you are fighting for, what it is that you want to reach, what it is that you want to accomplish.How to get there comes next, a matter of strategy and planning.There will be uncertainties, and unknowns.You may have to retreat a little bit to find another way to go back up to the top, but if you cant make up your mind on what is that you want, if you cant imagine the picture in your head, if you cant clearly see yourself five years from now doing what it is that you want, then we have a problem.

Be full of determination When was the last time that you really really wanted something, when you didnt

Know what you are doingAs obvious as it may be, still, some miss the point that you must know your stuff very well.If you are not knowledgeable in your field, if you are not an expert in your field, if you dont know how to get things done in your field, then you had better go back to where you were and learn your stuff and come back later.Even if you know what you are doing, you have to learn to differentiate yourself from the competition; you have to create a competitive advantage; you have to offer something that competitors either cant do or have to sweat a lot to catch up with you; even when they do, you must use your creative mind to offer a new service

to your customers.Dont forget -- besides knowing what you know, you must know what you dont know.The bottom line is that if you dont know something, you must admit it to your customer, as your customer will otherwise, sooner or later, realize this himself.

Get to know your customerWhile we all have a general idea of who our customer is, your success relies on

narrowing down your customer.If you are saying that you dont care and that you serve whoever knocks on your door, then you are on the wrong path.You have got to ask yourself who your typical customer is, what size of business he is running, what he is looking for (High Quality or Low Price), what he looks like, what his habits are, what he does and doesnt like, what he does after work for fun, with whom he is doing business, where can you meet him, and so on.If you look at your customer as a person

Dating, marriage and relationships are inherent within each and every culture, no matter how taboo the subject may be. With our inner human desires to seek those who we feel close and connected to, it should not come as a surprise to see budding relationships beginning to form starting as early as high-school. Growing up in Canada has revealed to me however, what appears to be a new cross-culture phenomenon in the Persian community. As Iranians living and growing up in a Westernized Canadian society, it seems that our second generation of Iranians have retained some of our parents old fashioned family values while modifying certain family beliefs. I wonder whether or not our parents ever pondered about our future relationships when they made their decisions to immigrate to Canada, but regardless of whether they considered it or not, one thing is very clear: most Persian parents would prefer their children to marry into other Iranian families. From the words of my own mother: I can only say whats truly in my heart in Farsi, thus explaining her grounds on why she would prefer me to date an Iranian man. I empathize with her; immigration appears to be one of those things that continue to have profound effects regardless of how much time has gone by, and I know that deep down she just wants the best for me. I say all this because I know the same goes for most families out there as well; after making a decision to pack and move to an all new land, I think its safe to say that other Iranian immigrants care gravely for their children as well. The problem arises from the fact that in wanting the best for their children, many parents may

unintentionally end up blocking their childrens path to happiness in finding the right person. Of course, sharing ethnicity and culture, especially one of Iranian descent, can have large impacts in a relationship between two people. The problem arises from the fact that many parents believe that the vast majority of differences will stop there. In wanting to speak their hearts language to their childrens partner, they neglect to see that the most important communication that needs to exist is the one between their child and his/her chosen partner.

Growing up in a land of diversity, it is unreasonable to expect ones children to only relate to members of a specific community. Relationships and love are complicated, and relating to someone can stem from far more many things than mere shared descent. From my own personal experiences as well as my friends, the only times when being Iranian has had the effects that our parents have desired has been in times when the other person also immigrated to Canada around the same time as us. It seems that differences in this period of time, from merely finishing grade one in Iran or up to grade five, can have significant effects on whether or not individuals bond or relate. In the twelve years that I have lived in Canada, Ive slowly grown into a particular niche of women who do not completely or satisfactorily fit the standards of Iranian women in Iran, or the Westernized ones of Canadian women in Canada. I am foreign to Iranians in Iran, with an English accent that subtly clouds my Farsi speaking, all the while living as

an Iranian in Canada who is often viewed as exotic to the typical Caucasian male. It seems that neither culture can view me as authentic, which is why Ive personally always connected best with other Iranians who immigrated from an early age. Although my mother would personally prefer for me to marry an Iranian man, it is nevertheless apparent in my family that such an expectation is unreasonable and detrimental. I am independent and self-motivated; I can be aggressive at times, a quality that is undoubtedly labelled as unladylike in Persian culture, and yet I am not the free spoken and solitary white woman archetype that is often imagined by Iranians. It seems that for our generation, it really will come down to personality. Similar cultures, religions, hobbies and families will certainly influence how a relationship develops, just as in any relationship, but for our generation that is experiencing a world of different cultures and people, it will no longer be about finding your other half within your own culture. As an Iranian-Canadian, I cant help but be drawn into the various cultures that I constantly experience, and the same goes for others who are not Iranian but are drawn to Iranian people and culture.

It seems that if we all tried to, even slightly, tether away at the architecture of taarof and public scrutiny that we have built towards the idea of dating within Persian culture, we could create an environment that is more open and accepting thus allowing us to have more honest relationships. The influence of society changes on cohabitation and other forms of partnershipMarriage, like other things in human life, has a social aspect. In its simple definition, marriage is a sexual relationship accepted by a society. This relationship results in a social institution called family, which has social functions and structure. The emphasis on the social aspect of marriage and family brings one thing to mind: that these functions will change with any change in the society or in its cultural aspects. However, these changes can occur both simultaneously and in time. Changes in time are the ones we see when different forms of sexual bonds between people with different sexual identities are accepted by societies gradually, as time goes by. For example, homosexual marriage is being increasingly accepted despite all its cultural obstacles. These changes have a temporal aspect: homosexual marriage has been legally accepted in Canada for almost ten years, while France only declared it legal this year. Another kind of change is the one made over a period of time, but due to changes in the social context of the individual. The Canadian media has long been giving a lot of news, reports, and analyses about a never-ending series of events related to a scandal involving Stephen Harper and the conservative government. Harper was appointed as the leader of the conservative party in 2003. Next, in 2004, when the party became the official opposition to the then Liberal government after getting some seats in the Canadian parliament, he strongly criticized the Liberals wrongdoings, corruption, and financial scandals. In 2006, when the conservative party led by Harper participated in the electoral campaigns, confronting its main rival, the Liberals, he managed to receive a lot of votes, through promising an accountable government and transparency in running the country. Yet what the prime minister has done from 2004-2005 till now amounts to him being head of an administration that has experienced similar issues astonishingly contradicting what he had been claiming. Women or Men, Which Are More Successful? Vahid Namazi, PhD

Iranian women or Iranian men, which are more successful in the host country? Research conducted about how immigrants integrate into their host country indicate the many problems they encounter and show that these problems can have different forms and levels based on the economic and social characteristics of the host country. Besides national and international characteristics effective in this process, the personal characteristics of the immigrant, including his/her gender, are also effective in this regard. While many studies admit that male immigrants are relatively more successful than female ones, some others indicate the opposite. This issue and the reasons behind it can be investigated from different viewpoints. The results of university research conducted by the author on a number of Iranian immigrants residing in Montreal supports this point and analyzes some of its reasons. The Side Effects of Dual Citizenship Abdul-Rasoul Dayyani, PhD, attorney and university assistant professor in Iran

Dual citizenship means that someone has two or more citizenships, i.e., he is the subject of one country, yet at the same time, another country considers him as its subject. Dual citizenship or dual nationality may cause some problems for the subject. These problems include the issue of having to pay taxes twice and having to do military service twice. Moreover, it may cause some conflicts between the two corresponding countries over political support for the person. It may not only disrupt the relations between the two countries, but also cause some problems because the rights and duties of the subject are not clear. When we talk about citizenship, the most important thing is the relationship between the individual and the government. A person who has two or more citizenships cannot fulfill his duties regarding two or more countries. Countries that do not explicitly inhibit dual citizenship for their subjects have thus tried to solve the problem, answering some questions in this regard. Here, we are going to take a look at these answers. Chapter 1: theories about the solutions for the problems of dual citizenshipSeveral theories have been presented for solving the problem of dual citizenship, two of which are especially important, namely the theories of lack of liability, and effective citizenship. In other words, some experts believe that because the governments are equal in terms of the right to rule, no government has the right to politically support an individual against his underlying government. Conversely, some others believe that the regulation effective in international law in this regard is the effective or dominant doctrine, in line with which the citizenship of the government the individual has closer connections to is preferred. It should be noted that the turning point in this regard is the 1930 Hague Convention (regarding issues related to the conflict of citizenship laws). Even two years after the festival, the memory has stayed close and dearly to me and I look forward to once again taking part in the celebration this year. I think attending the festival with my parents and a non-Iranian friend was particularly influential in my experience as I was able to take part in both helping to teach my friend about our culture as well as learning about our history from my parents. Tirgan Festival is also a nice way to help Canadians separate their views towards the government of Iran from the actual people of Iran as there is an evident dissonance between the two entities. Free and far from repression, Iranian-Canadians are able to celebrate their ethnic roots without worries about becoming prosecuted for their attires, music and behaviour. In fact, it was extremely interesting to see, and to feel, such a sense of togetherness and unity as the Iranian community has often been criticized for its strong criticism and disunity within itself. It seems that without a dominant government or religious influence, the people can temporarily set aside negative thoughts and competitiveness in order to come together and merely be happy.

I look forward to learning more about Persian culture and history in this years festival and sincerely encourage readers to participate in the event as well. It is our duty as Canadians, and more importantly as human beings, to be open and understanding and to help break down the walls of stereotyping and racial discriminations. Tirgan Festival is a fantastic way to acquire a new view on Iranian people and Iran; a view that is separate from the one portrayed by the media. For Iranians, Tirgan is a great reason to get together with friends, family and loved-ones in order to see Toronto in a whole new light. Canada is truly a land of multiculturalism. With a large and diverse population and the opportunity to practise and celebrate ones cultures and beliefs, it is no surprise to see so many Canadians eager to take part in various cultural events. One of the amazing things that make Canada special and unique is the fact that despite the evident diversity that is unmistakably displayed amongst its population, there nevertheless exists a strong sense of unity between the Canadian people especially when it comes to celebrating. In fact, a quick drive through Toronto can be a cultural experience within itself; with areas such as Little Italy and Greek Town, Canadians are able to derive a little taste and experience from each culture. After attending many of Torontos events, including the Toronto Caribbean Carnival Parade Caribana, Taste of the Danforth, and the Spanish Festival, I was more than delighted to hear that the Iranian community is also a participant in Torontos festival life. The Tirgan Festival is a large celebration of Iranian arts and culture and was one Torontonian festival that made me exceptionally proud of my Iranian roots. I had the pleasure of

attending this event two years ago along with my parents and a non-Iranian friend, which largely contributed to all the fun that I had that day.

My friend and I had a chance to explore the downtown Harbourfront Centre area which was decked out with bright lights, fashion pieces, food and music, and I was able to familiarize her with all the parts of our culture that I knew about. The experience itself was also extremely enlightening as there were many aspects of our Persian history and culture that I did not know about. The large array of arts and delicate Persian rugs and carpets on display were truly a sight to see, not to mention the fact that we probably ran into every single Persian person that I had previously met! The festival was a true success and seeing so many fellow Iranians celebrating the culture and essence of being Iranian was particularly refreshing to see, especially during times when our Iranian government dominated the news with talks of its nuclear program thus causing some feelings of discomfort or shame. Seeing so many Iranians celebrating the festival with their friends and family evoked many feelings for me and I could not help but to feel nostalgic about certain events. After leaving Iran shortly after completing the first grade, I was never again able to establish the same close relationship that I had with my cousins and family members which consequently left a certain void for me that was only deepened by the fact that I am an only-child. Seeing Toronto filled with so many Iranians eating things like Faloodeh, listening to music and dancing

made me miss my distant family that much more, and I could not help but to feel sad that they could not be there to celebrate the festival with me.

From a different perspective, it was also extremely joyous to see so many non-Iranians taking part in the warm and live celebration with their non-Iranian as well as Iranian friends. From friends, to boyfriends and girlfriends, and husbands and wives, its clear that our Iranian-Canadian population is clearly intermingling with other cultures and backgrounds, and it was nice to see this ultimately reflected back in the crowds of people as well. We finished our day off with some authentic and delicious Persian food and started heading back to the car with our tummies full; my friend was particularly happy to leave the festival with some newfound Persian dance skills as well. All in all, it was an experience that I would highly recommend for all Canadians regardless of whether they possess Persian ethnicity or not. It is clear that as the Iranian-Canadian population changes, this change will then become reflected back in the Canadian population. Statistical analysis reveals that the Iranian population in Canada is growing and Farsi is quickly becoming one of the top languages spoken in Canada today. Because of this strong influence in Canada, I would most definitely encourage and urge other Canadians to familiarize themselves with the culture behind the race. Iranians may be divided on various topics but if there is one thing that we know how to come together to do, it would be celebrating.
