LE PASSÉ SIMPLE
The passé simple, translated in English as either "simple past" or "preterite," is the literary equivalent of the passé composé, which means that it is used only in formal writing (e.g., historical and literary writing) and very formal speech.
In such writing and speech, the passé simple is used alongside the imperfect, just as in everyday speech/writing, the passé composé and imperfect are used together.

CONJUNCTIONS
Conjunctions provide a link between similar words or groups of words, such as nouns, verbs, people, etc. There are two types of French conjunctions:
1. Coordinating conjunctions: join words and groups of words with an equal value.- J’aime les pommes et les oranges.- Je veux le faire, mais je n’ai pas d’argent.2. Subordinating conjunctions: join dependent clauses to main clauses.- J’ai dit que j’aime les pommes.- Il travaille pour que vous puissiez manger.

LES EXPRESSION DE TEMPS
As you advance in French, you will need to know how to use expressions of time to clarify or specifically indicate when something is happening.
LES EXPRESSION DE TEMPS
Preposition + nounPendant : duringQu’est-ce tu as fait pendant les vacances?
Conjunction Pendant que: whileQu’est-ce que tu as fait pendant que je jouais au golf?Lorsque: whenJ’ai rencontré Paul lorsqu’il travaillait à Paris.Au moment que: just asJe suis arrivé à la gare au moment où le train partait.
LES EXPRESSIONS DE TEMPS
The French word pairs an/année, jour/journée, matin/matinée, and soir/soirée can be confusing to students because each pair has a single English translation.
The important thing to understand is that the difference between the words in each pair has to do with two different ways of considering time.
LES EXPRESSIONS DE TEMPS
The short words an, jour, matin, and soir (note that they are all masculine) indicate a simple amount of time or division of time. For the purposes of this lesson, I'll call these "division words."
Je suis en France depuis deux jours. I've been in France for two days.
Il est fatigué ce soir. He's tired this evening.
LES EXPRESSIONS DE TEMPS
In comparison, the longer words année, journée, matinée, and soirée (all feminine) indicate a duration of time, usually stressing the actual length of time. I'll call these "duration words."
Nous avons travaillé pendant toute la matinée. We worked all morning.
Elle est la première de son année.* She's the first in her year / class.
*Though année is feminine, since it begins with a vowel you have to say son année (not "sa année")

TEMPORAL EXPRESSION : IL Y A ET DEPUIS
Depuis, meaning "for" or "since," can be used in the present or past in order to express an action that began in the past and continued to the temporal reference point used in the sentence, which can be the present or some point in the past.
Depuis is thus used for actions that were incomplete at the referenced time, and can refer to two different kinds of time:
Il y a means "ago" and can only be used for things that are already completed. The verb in the sentence must be in the past and il y a must be followed by some reference to time.
DEPUIS
When followed by a period of time, depuis indicates the duration of an action and is equivalent to "have been + -ing (perfect progressive) + for"*
Nous attendons depuis une heure. We've been waiting for an hour.
Il parle depuis 5 minutes. He's been speaking for 5 minutes.
DEPUIS
When followed by an event or point in time, depuis indicates the start time of an action and is translated in English by "have + -en/-ed (perfect tense) + since/for“
Je suis malade depuis mon arrivée.I've been sick since I got here.
Il était fâché depuis l'annonce, mais maintenant...He had been angry since the announcement, but now...
IL Y A
Je suis arrivée il y a une heure. I arrived an hour ago.
Il a parlé il y a 5 minutes. He spoke 5 minutes ago.
Il a travaillé il y a 10 jours. He worked 10 days ago.
J'étais malade il y a une semaine. I was sick a week ago.
Il y a deux jours, j'ai vu un chat noir. Two days ago, I saw a black cat.
J'ai déménagé ici il y a longtemps. I moved here a long time ago.
INFORMAL SYNONYMS
*Il y a ... que, ça fait ... que , and voilà ... que are informal equivalents for the first use of depuis - they mean to have been doing something for a certain amount of time.
Il y a cinq ans que j'habite ici. I've been living here for five years.
Ça fait deux heures que nous attendons. We've been waiting for two hours.
Voilà six mois que je travaille avec Marc. I've been working with Marc for six months.
