A Church of and for the Poor

The book of James is one of the hardest hitting in the New Testament. He is a tell-it-like-it-is apostle, warning the early Church not to show partiality to the rich and powerful. This is always a danger, especially in a Church that relies on donations. While gratitude to donors is understandable and proper, it’s easy for gratitude to become preference, partiality, and a different moral standard. James warns the Church against this. Jesus warns us, too. He talks about inviting the poor to a party rather than those who can repay us. He tells us that when we give, that the left hand not know what the right is doing. He warns the rich that the path to heaven is narrow. Jesus’ call to salvation was for all, but his pastoral focus was certainly with the poor. So he dedicated much of his time reaching out to those who could give nothing in return: the blind, deaf, lame, and lepers. And his attention didn’t stop at the materially poor but extended to sinners and those thought to be impure. This love for the weak was a sign of the Messiah as proclaimed by many prophets, including Isaiah. The Anointed of God would come to vindicate the poor, orphaned, widowed, sick, and oppressed. Jesus did exactly that, and it was this solicitude and miraculous power that began convincing Galileans, and eventually those in Jerusalem, that he was the long– awaited One. Pope Francis said he longed for a Church of the poor, for the poor. It seems Jesus did, too. —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES

The phrase “Sunday best” has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

PARISH LIFE

CATHOLIC BOOK CLUB The new season of The Catholic Book Club begins on Friday, September 14, at St. Gregory the Great School. The meeting is from 9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m. All are welcome!

The September selection is Jason Evert’s “Saint John Paul the Great: His Five Loves” (Totus Tuus Press, distributed by Ignatius Press). This summer our parish youth group did a book study on this very readable volume. It really has appeal to all ages. After a close look at the pope’s life, the book focuses on the ways in which John Paul II exhibited his own love for young people, human love, the Blessed Sacrament, the Virgin Mary, and the Cross. The author brings the Saint to life as he shares dramatic episodes from the future pope’s youth and show how his love for God, scholarship, and the arts formed him into the holy man who occupied a world stage.
