Thoroughbredracing inCanada is one ofthe largest andmost thrillingequestrian sports,drawing enthusiasts to thesidelines where they cheer on their favorite horses.

Canada has a long history of Thoroughbred racing. TheQueen’s Plate race was first held in Canada in the year1860, making it the oldest Thoroughbred race in NorthAmerica. Since 1959, the Canadian Triple Crown for 3-year-old horses is the most prestigious series for aThoroughbred in the country.

The most successful Canadian-bred Thoroughbred wasNorthern Dancer, the winner of the 1964 Kentucky Derby,Preakness and Queen’s Plate. His record time in theKentucky Derby was not beaten until 1973. Twenty-oneyears after his death, Northern Dancer is regarded as themost successful Thoroughbred sire in modern history andhis descendants continue to dominate racing the worldover with numerous champions on four continents.

Visit the province of Ontario and enjoy the Canadian TripleCrown by attending the Queen’s Plate at WoodbineRacetrack in June, the Prince of Wales Stakes at the FortErie Racetrack in July and the Breeder’s Stakes at theWoodbine Racetrack in August. Between the months ofAugust and November, seven Thoroughbred horseauctions will be held in British Columbia, Alberta,Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

Barrel Racing is known as one of the fastest horsecompetitions, requiring tremendous athleticism from both thehorse and rider as they race against the clock through acloverleaf pattern.

In Canada, these horses are specially bred for speed andacceleration and they have the ability to turn quickly. Goodbarrel horses must be willing to learn, respond quickly to cuesand be able to perform.

Canada is affiliated with the National Barrel Horse Associationand each year a national championships for barrel racing isheld.

In show jumping the rider guides the horse over jumps that canexceed 1.6 meters in height and width while testing the horse’sskill, speed and obedience and the rider’s horsemanship. Thewinner is the competitor who finishes the course with thefewest number of penalties in the fastest time.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Canada’s Eric Lamaze won theindividual gold medal and the Canadian Team captured thesilver medal.

Show Jumping Again in 2010 Spruce Meadows of Calgary, Alberta, was votedthe world’s number-one outdoor show jumping venue. The tophorses and riders from around the globe spend upwards ofthree months each summer competing at Spruce Meadowsbecause it offers the best facilities and the greatest prizemoney in the world. Its television broadcasts are seen by morethan 820 million viewers in 100 countries.

Canada’s annual indoor show jumping competitions can befound at the Maritime Fall Fair in Nova Scotia and the RoyalManitoba Winter Fair in Manitoba. The Canadian ShowJumping Championships take place at the Royal AgriculturalWinter Fair in Toronto, Ontario, each year. Since its inceptionin 1922, the Royal has become the world’s largest indooragricultural and international equestrian competition. BetweenNovember 4-13, 2011, join more than 300,000 visitors at theRoyal.

Originating from theskills that horses andcowboys use on working

cattle ranches, the sport of reining involves a horseperforming intricate patterns while the rider makes barelyperceptible cues.

Competitors are scored on how well they execute themaneuvers of a designated pattern. Each pattern consists ofcompulsory movements performed at the gallop such as slow,small circles, fast, large circles, changes of lead and rollbacks. Sliding stops and rapid 360° spins are the mostexciting for spectators. In freestyle reining, they perform athree and half minute routine to music.

For decades Canadian expertise has been proven at the

Reining international level. Most recently, 2006 gold medalist, DuaneLatimer, won the individual bronze medal at the 2010 AlltechFEI World Equestrian Games riding the Canadian-bredQuarter Horse called Dun Playing Tag.

Canada’s Lisa Coulter earned the top spot in 2010 on both theInternational Equestrian Federation’s FEI Reining WorldRanking and World Standing lists. Canada has its sights set onthe 2014 World Equestrian Games that will be held in France.

Competitions suitable for beginners as well as professionalsare held across the country including at the Equestrian Park ofBlainville in Quebec and Miracle Ranch in Manitoba.

The sport of eventing is best described as an equine triathlon.It began as a military exercise for cavalry horses and officersto test their endurance, agility and ability to get between twopoints in the countryside. Today in the modern equivalent, thesport of eventing encompasses three separate tests:dressage, cross-country and jumping.

Dressage competitions are becoming increasingly morepopular. In western Canada you will find the Capital City Classic in British Columbia and the 2011 Western RegionalChampionships in Alberta. Canada was built with the labour of draft horses and it has a longhistory of breeding and competition. Associations representingthe breeds of Clydesdale, Percheron, Belgian and Shire wereformed in Canada between 1886 and 1910 and still exist today.

Draft horses are shown in halter, under saddle and in teams ofupwards of eight horses.

The Canadian-owned Cape Cod Percherons won the SupremeGelding Six Horse Hitch at the 2010 World Percheron Congress.

Along with the Royal Agriculture Winter Fair, Canada hostspremier competitions such as Rockton’s World Fair in Ontario,the Canadian Western Agribition in Saskatchewan and the RoyalManitoba Winter Fair in Manitoba.

参加者量身制定项目，使得参加者能够激发全部潜力、提高参加者与马的终身

Equine Canada is the official national equestrian

federation. In all of its activities, the protection of

horse welfare is most important.

Equine Canada is recognized by the Government

of Canada, the Fédération Equestre

Internationale, the Canadian Olympic Committee,

the Canadian Paralympic Committee, and the

Coaching Association of Canada.

It has the authority to:

a Create and implement programs that educate

and support all levels of participants in the sport

from beginners to the World Championship and

Olympic level

a Publish national riding tests and standards

a Determine and administer the rules of horse

competitions held in Canada

a Uphold the standards of horse welfare and

ethical sport

a Support horse breeding and the horse

industry in Canada

Horse Competition Judges and Stewards

Equine Canada is responsible for accrediting, monitoring and upgrading all

sport officials responsible for sanctioned competition in Canada.

Coaches

Striving for excellence, Equine Canada’s coaching program is developed in

partnership with the National Coaching Certification Program, the

Coaching Association of Canada and Sport Canada.

The program provides coaches and instructors with the tools necessary to

make the equestrian experience safe and enjoyable for all horses and

human participants.

Long Term Athlete Development

Equine Canada has adopted the Long Term Athlete Development program

which is a systematic approach to maximizing a participant’s potential and

involvement in activities with horses.

The framework aims to define optimal training, competition and recovery

programs that are based on biological age rather than chronological age.

By tailoring programs to address participants’ physical, mental, emotional

and technical needs, especially during children’s early years of

development, the program enables participants to reach full potential,

increase lifelong participation in activities with horses and improve their

health and well-being.
