King Midas and His Golden Touch

Many thousands of years ago, in Greece, there lived a king called Midas. Midas loved gold more than anything else in the world except his young daughter.

One day, a God called Bacchus offered to give King Midas a reward because he was a kind king. Midas asked that everything he touched be turned into gold. Midas was very happy. He touched a rose and immediately it turned into gold. He touched the rose bush and turned them into gold. He was overjoyed.

The next day, while he was having his breakfast, Midas touched a piece of bread. The bread changed into gold. He was shocked. He then took an apple. It turned to gold. He could not eat anything! Suddenly, he saw his daughter running towards him sadly. He hugged her to comfort her. To his surprise, his daughter had turned into gold statue!

Midas called out to Bacchus to forgive him for being so stupid. Bacchus told Midas to bathe in a magic river, the Pactolus. Midas did so and his golden touch disappeared. All returned to normal including his daughter. Midas learned that not to be greedy anymore.

3.03pmDear Mei Hwa,

Thank you for telling me about the Mooncake Festival. I enjoyed reading about how it is celebrated. It reminds me of the Loy Krathong Festival in Thailand. Like the Mooncake Festival, it is celebrated with lights. Our ‘lanterns’ though, are made of leaves and we float them.

In fact, we are celebrating the Loy Krathong Festival next month. It is held every year after the rice planting season. On Loy Krathong night, people dress in their best clothes and go to the neareat river, pond or lake to float their ‘krathongs’. A ‘krathong’ is a leaf-cup decorated with flowers, candles and joss-sticks. ‘Loy’ in Thai means ‘to float’.

Thai people believe that when a person floats his or her ‘krathong’ in the water, their troubles will float away with the ‘krathong’. I don’t believe in that myself. But I enjoy going to the stream near our house with my friends and setting our ‘krathongs’ there. It is a wonderful sight to see hundreds of ‘krathongs’ floating and giving out their light. On that night too, we let off fireworks and the sky is brightwith them.

I hope you can come to Thailand and see how the festival is celebrated. I would like to visit Malaysia and see how the festivals are celebrated. Festivals are such fun!

Well, that’s all for now. Please write soon.

Your friend, Somchit
