Getting the residents of Sidney to support an effort to improve the downtown core is the impetus behind the third presentation of a retail threats report by an international retail and marketing consultant.

On April 9, the Sidney Tourism Improvement Group (STIG) hosts Sidney resident Richard Talbot as he delivers an overview of the commercial development projects planned in Central and North Saanich and their potential impact on Sidney busi-nesses. He will be joined at the Mary Winspear Centre by Sidney retailer Garry Froese, owner of InTouch Cards and Gifts. Froese will address the issue from the perspective of a business operator.

“Garry is a dynamic speaker and his presentation will focus on the challenges to local retailers,” says Steve Duck of the TIDES Group, which is providing the event management.

Called SOS — Save Our Sidney, Duck said the title is apt in the wake of con-cerns expressed by residents and businesses following Talbot’s two earlier presentations to Town council and the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce.

With looming commercial development, a group of merchants hope the community gets behind an effort to improve downtown Sidney

Retail consultant Richard Talbot will present his case at the Mary Winspear Centre on April 9.

“Yes, it is an SOS,” Duck said, noting recent statistics that show Sidney has an estimated six per cent retail vacancy rate — second in Greater Vic-toria to View Royal.

“This is happening even without (planned commercial develop-ments) at the Jesken Town Centre and San-down Commons,” Duck continued.

He said the munici-pality, the Chamber of Commerce and the Sid-ney Business Improve-ment Area (SBIA) have heard Talbot’s warn-ings and still no action

has been taken. Duck said the evening will include a question and answer session and meet and greet after-wards, with the specific goal of establishing a committee. That com-mittee, he said, will be tasked with creating an action plan and holding a workshop in, ideally, two weeks’ time.

Talbot said it’s impor-tant the general public gets involved, as the business property own-ers — especially those

who live elsewhere and cannot vote locally — often get ignored. He said he sees this effort creating a lobby group that will push for local politicians to get behind improve-ments to the town’s downtown core. Such a group working on the future of the busi-ness core, he asserted, should have the mayor of the community at the fore. Mayor Larry Cross has stated such a plan should originate

from the business com-munity itself. Talbot said in any case, every-one needs to work together for anything to get done.

“This idea was a wake-up call,” Talbot said of his presentation which outlines poten-tial retail sales losses once large commer-cial projects are built. “Residents need to be involved in a big way.”

Talbot has called for a variety of down-town changes in order

to prepare retailers for an onslaught of change. Those include improv-ing the town’s main gateways, upgrading Beacon Wharf, improv-ing storefronts and signage, coordinating business hours and fix-ing Sidney’s convoluted traffic patterns.

Talbot also addressed the mayor’s concern about inap-propriate comments during his presenta-tions — specifically on Talbot saying body

parts should be used to stop the large devel-opments. Talbot said he was referring to the ongoing filming of the murder mystery series Gracepoint on the Saa-nich Peninsula.

Cross, in a media release, stated such comments could be offensive to First Nations communities.

The April 9 session takes place at the Mary Winspear Centre’s Charlie White Theatre from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Anacortes Ferry returns to Sidney this Sunday

SIDNEY — The return of the Anacortes Ferry to Sidney is a sure sign spring — and tourist season — is once again upon us.

This Sunday, April 6, the community gathers at the Sidney International Ferry Terminal to welcome the first vessel of the spring season. At 11 a.m. on Sunday, residents and local com-munity leaders will bring U.S.A. and Canadian flags to the water-front. A bagpiper will greet the first visitors as they drive and walk off of the vessel. The ferry is scheduled to arrive at approxi-mately 11:10 a.m. Red serge-clad RCMP officer will join with Sid-ney’s Town Crier, Kenny Podmore, and criers from Washington State and Anacortes, Wa. are expected to be on hand.

Anacortes is one of Sidney’s three sister cities (the others being Nimi, Japan and Cairns, Australia).

Central Saanich will approve their five year financial plan next week with a 3.11 per cent increase for residential proper-ties for 2014.

The financial plan was presented by Central Saanich Director of Financial Ser-vices, Rosalyn Tanner, at a public meeting on March 24. The first three readings of the bylaw have already been passed and the plan is expected to have its final adop-tion during a regular council meeting on Monday, April 7.

The 2014 financial plan maintains cur-rent service levels and continues major projects from 2013 including the inte-grated stormwater management plan, the pavement management plan, the Centen-nial Park Core Redevelopment project and general facilities maintenance, said Tanner.

The 3.11 per cent increase, which works out to about a $50 hike for each house-hold this year, will help fund increases to the District’s reserve funds, specifically the general reserve earmarked for future expansion, as well as the maintenance

and extension of infrastructure assets like vehicle fleet replacements and water and sewer main upgrades and general infla-tionary increases.

On the budget decrease list this year are police services with a 4.35 per cent decrease in expenses (just over $210,000) and the engineering, public works and transportation services department with a 3.10 per cent decrease (just over $133,000).

The fire services department and the planning, building and bylaw enforcement department will both see increases of .86 per cent ($10,800) and 3.71 percent (just over $192,000), respectively.

Business properties will see a 3.12 per cent increase on their tax rates, something which Tanner said the municipality has worked hard to do over the last few years.

“We’ve been able to keep the light indus-trial rates low which encourages busi-ness and says to industry ‘come in to our municipality’.”

Central Saanich’s municipal revenue is made up primarily of property tax which accounts for 61.14 per cent of the District’s annual revenue.

Women helping women, is always in fashion.

The Zonta Club of Victoria’s third annual Fashion Show and Luncheon returns to the Capi-tal City Yacht Club, where local women raise money to help other women in their commu-nity.

“It is important to give back, life has been good to me as a woman but I know a lot of

women struggle,” said fashion show co ordinator Carol Crabb. “Life isn’t good for everybody.”

The 45-year-old society of 22 women, an arm of Zonta Inter-national, an organization aimed at improving the lives of women around the world through ser-vice and advocacy, will donate proceeds from the fashion show’s ticket sales to the Prosti-tutes Empowerment, Education and Recovery (PEERS) society, aiming to raise more than the $2420 they raised for the Victo-

ria Women’s Sexual Assault Cen-tre in 2013.

All fashion is provided by the Marmalade Tart boutique.

“Women as a part of the human race do need help,” she said. “There are still chal-lenges for many women in many communities. For us whatever we can do to help women be healthy in their home and health in their environment.”

Tickets are $45 dollars, for more information visit Zontavic-toria.org.

SIDNEY — After a suc-cessful inaugural Fam-ily Day event in 2013, expectations were high for this year’s three-day celebration.

The Sidney Family Day event committee recently sent the News Review their round up of Family Day in the community, which was held in February and has been growing since its inception in 2013.

With the combined efforts of many differ-ent individuals and organizations, three days of LEGO-themed events were planned, marketed and exe-cuted at various ven-ues throughout Sid-ney’s business core. A conservative estimate of visitors to the com-munity would be in the range of 5,000 to 6,000, with the majority of vis-itors coming from the Greater Victoria area.

Some of this year’s highlights included a

very creative LEGO display at the Sid-ney Pier Hotel, a fan-tastic open house hosted by the Sidney Fire Department, the newly released LEGO Movie playing at the Star Cinema, underwa-ter LEGO at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Cen-tre, an expanded LEGO

treasure hunt featur-ing many of Sidney’s merchants, and a huge LEGO event at Mary Winspear Centre. All of this in addition to the annual LEGO exhibit at the Sidney Museum.

The weekend was a success and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. This event

continues to be an example of the oppor-tunity and potential presented when the community works together. Already, plan-ning is in place for Fam-ily Day 2015.

YOUR VIEW

Re: Retail threats article, PNRMarch 28.

Of course I had been warned that at some point Sidney council would probably try and shoot the messen-ger and turn on me, as they have turned on numerous others trying to promote change in our town.

However I was profoundly shocked to see that not only had Mayor [Larry] Cross issued a media release stating he would not take a leadership role in saving the town from its imminent competitive threats but also used it to launch a personal attack on me citing bla-tantly untrue statements he attrib-uted to me.

For those who attended one or both of my presentations I think you will confirm that I never ever expressed any “blatant disrespect of our First Nations neighbours” nor did I “make light of, or disrespect, the burial practices of First Nations peoples.” In fact I never mentioned First Nations at all. Indeed I under-stand that most of you correctly realised that my body parts joke was in relation to the murder-mys-tery TV series Gracepoint currently being shot in Sidney.

If the Mayor was indeed commit-ted to Team Sidney in this coming battle and was truly concerned that my joke at council on March 17 might be misinterpreted and nega-tively impact out efforts, why did he

not say so then or, at the very least, phone me the next day to say that my remarks might be misconstrued and give offence?  No, this was a deliberate attempt to discredit me and, more importantly, my message.

In my view the Mayor should retract his allegations against me and apologize in writing in this pub-lication.

Richard D. B. TalbotSidney

Once it’s gone, it’s gone Before we develop and build

more condos on the waterfront areas of Sidney, let’s just wait a moment and reflect.

The ocean view belongs to everybody, not just those who can afford it. What makes Sidney so special is our small waterfront town appeal. If merchants are worried about big box stores, we have to keep and nurture what we have, because once it’s gone it’s gone.

Personally I’m thrilled when I can find a free three hour parking spot where I can enjoy the cinema, eat at a restaurant and shop without moving the car.

As my dear Dad used to say, it’s better to keep the customers you have than look for new ones.

Jan NelsonSidney

Sunken flotillas of wreckage

Allow me to share with readers about another crisp beautiful day viewing Tsehum Harbour from my kitchen. Let’s see, cavorting seagulls, blue herons, seals, legitimate boaters and, oh yes, another sunken flotilla of wreckage. Not to worry, once the diesel fuel and other toxins disperse and wash onto the beaches, it won’t kill too much wildlife.

Please explain why, should I spit off the side of my fully-licensed, self-contained boat, three levels of officious governance gleefully descend on me? In their inflatables they materialize brandishing clip-boards and ticket books, reciting infractions. Seemingly oblivious to the irony they motor right past the harbour train-wrecks in their enthusiastic, misguided rush to hassle law-abiding boaters.

Squabbling on this issue must stop now. Our beautiful harbours and anchorages are being slowly poisoned, littered with this material debris.

Dr. Peter MeuserSidney

Mayor should apologize for comments

Distracted driving hang-ups

At some point, most of us have been guilty of some form of distracted driving — whether that comes from using hand-held electronic devices or just being too emotional behind the wheel.

After statistics revealed this week that there have been 81 deaths in B.C. linked to distracted driving, we had all better wake up a little.

Those deaths outnumber the drinking and driving-caused deaths in this province over the same time period (2012). And according to B.C.’s Attorney General Suzanne Anton, this province had more distracted driving deaths than Ontario — which has a much larger population. Could it be that Ontario’s steep fines (higher than those in B.C.) are a better deterrant?

That’s being looked into and this province could very well see fines and vehicle suspensions increased to combat the scourge of hand-held electronic devices.

Will that be enough? It’s a start, certainly, but until the practice becomes

as much of a social faux pas as impaired driving has become, people will keep chatting and texting instead of paying attention to the road.

Getting into a vehicle and driving somewhere is probably one of the most dangerous things most people do all day. And yet, most of us take it for granted.

Operating a large, heavy and fast vehicle is a huge responsibility, however the fact is, driving has become very easy. With the latest fancy gadgets designed to look behind you, parallel park for you and even detect objects all around you and then issue a warning, it’s easy to turn to your mobile phone or other device — instead of keeping an eye on the road or what the other drivers and nearby pedestrians are doing.

The fact that with all the drivers on the road there aren’t more crashes and deaths is staggeringly amazing, considering all the things that could go wrong.

It’s easy to take driving and the actions of everyone else on the road for granted.

But no one should expect to get behind the wheel and rely on anyone else to stay safe. It’s up to each driver to pay attention, no matter the circumstances in which they find themselves.

It should not be that difficult, then, to put away the phone for the relatively short time of a commute.

Better to return a call later than have that cost you hundreds of dollars, one impounded car or even your life.

PENINSULA NEWS REVIEW - Friday, April 4, 2014 www.vicnews.com • A7

Do you have a per-fect green  lawn, spread out

smoothly in front of your home? But, wait. What is that yellow spot? Actually there are several — could they be dandelions? I believe they are! They’ve gotta go!

Thus spoke the irri-tated home owner! It is said that a weed is just a flower in the wrong place and that’s the way I feel about dan-delions because they really are beautiful.

There is a large con-gregation of them across the street from a church on Fourth street. They probably started out with one or maybe two plants and now there’s a size-able family. I suppose someone who objects will come along and spray weed killer on them. I’ve heard that in England people actu-ally plant dandelions in their flower gardens.

It is amazing that we humans seem to try to improve on what nature has provided. What about calendula, and ranunculus, which

look like aristocratic dandelions?

I was at a nursery and in a display there was a sassy-looking gold ranunculus. I swear it smiled at me so, of course, I bought it. Its first bloom is over but there are two buds left. I should never be allowed in a nursery when I have my purse with me, otherwise I come home carrying something that is going to require loving care.

If you have your veg-etable bed ready, you could plant transplants of broccoli, cabbage,

Brussels sprouts and cauliflower any time now but please don’t seed your corn. Wait until lilacs bloom — an old gardener’s hint and I found it works. Corn wants a warmed soil to get it growing. Still too early for tomatoes, pep-pers and green onions unless you are going to cover them with a row cover of remay cloth  or plant them in a plastic tunnel where they are sheltered. They could also be placed in one of those tomato cages with a plastic coat wrapped around the

sides. I used to use clothes pegs to hold the plastic in place.

Remove the tun-nel when nights are warmer than they are

right now and either remove it during the day or open the tunnel ends so that there is good air circulation.

Tomatoes and pep-pers are only safe out-side at night in early May and even then watch the weather for nights cooler than 10 degrees. Cover them for sure if that tempera-ture is forecast.

I remember one spring when I had just set the tomato plants outside to harden off during the day when, without warning, we

had   hail. I was panic stricken as it beat down on my precious toma-toes. They survived but their leaves were pit-ted with tell-tale white marks where the hail stones had hit them. Just one of the hazards a home gardener has to face.

Then there are wan-dering dogs who tend to relieve themselves on your sturdy pep-pers. If you see them doing it, scream at them and rush out and turn the hose on the peppers. The dog will

be startled but unlikely to take offence, think-ing you just a trifle strange! But the pep-pers will be saved and probably taste exactly the same as the others not piddled upon.

SIDNEY — Yoga Under the Salish Sea kicks off again next week at the at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Cen-tre (SODC).

On Wednesday, April 9 the classes begin and will now be offered in conjunction with Pan-orama Recreation Cen-tre. The program has been popular since it began at the SODC in 2012, said the Centre’s Marketing Manager Christina Smethurst.

“The underwater habitats lend them-selves so well to a serene yoga experi-ence,” said Smethurst, adding that there has always been great

response to the class.Smethurst continued

to say that, as it has in the past, the class will be taught in a Hatha-

style yoga and wel-comes all skill levels.

The major differ-ence with Panorama’s involvement is that the

rec. centre will now col-lect registration.

“Panorama is the go-to place for fitness and wellness classes on the Peninsula and we’re thrilled to be working with them on this,” she said.

Those interested in signing up for the eight-class program can do so through Panorama. SODC annual pass holders and Panorama members will receive a 20% discount (SODC members must sign up in person at the rec centre to receive the discount).

Yoga Under the Sal-ish Sea takes place at the Shaw Ocean Dis-covery Centre every Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. staring April 9 and will be led by experienced instructor Jackie Rioux.

Kia taking on the small cars from the big guys

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA – Kia rounds out its attack on the country’s best-sell-ing cars with the launch of the final two models to the Forte lineup.Last year Kia introduced their all-new Forte sedan to compete with such top sellers as the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Hyun-dai Elantra. This week, the 5-door hatchback version called Forte5 and the coupe, called Forte Koup begin arriving in dealerships. The launch of these two vehicles took us from Huntington Beach, California, through the mountains and desert to Borrego Springs and then back through the mountains to San Diego. The terrain varies from massive California highways to very twisty mountain passes and vast desert valleys. Stunning scenery and a recommended drive for any sightseer or driving enthusiast. LooksThe Forte5 is the more practical of the two new Kias with a hatchback design that sets it apart from the competition. Many competitors don’t offer a hatch so this is sure to be noticed by people who need extra storage and passenger room. Sold with a new base 2.0L engine or an optional 1.6L turbo engine, there are varied looks depending on which trim is chosen. The non-turbo Forte5 gets a front grille similar to the sedan with a smaller lower intake and a larger grille opening. The Forte5 SX turbo gets the same grille as the Koup, with the opposite

front treatment, a bigger lower opening and a smaller, more aggressive grille. The great news is that all Forte5 and Koup models come with alloy wheels; 16-inches on the Forte5 and 18-inch alloys on the turbo version. The Koup has 17-inch base alloys or 18-inches on the turbo.InsideI drove the top Turbo version of the Forte5 and the base, non-turbo version of the Koup. Both have an amazing level of interior refinement. If you have ever questioned that Kia knows how to make good quality cars, just look at these new products. The switches and dials look and feel first rate and the layout is logical and easy to use. Koup can actually fit adults up to six feet. The dash has either a conventional radio layout with a smaller screen but when the backup camera is added on either model, the screen jumps to 6-inch-es and becomes a touchscreen device. If the buyer wants the navigation system, then the top turbo model with luxury package is needed. The front seats sit high off the floor for good outward visibility. What continues to amaze me is the level of equipment Kia offers from standard Bluetooth and satellite radio to optional heated and cooled seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, power folding outside mirrors and more. True luxury touches.DriveKia has put some punch into both the base and turbo versions of the Forte5 and Koup. The base engine is a large 2.0L direct injection engine with 173hp. In comparison, the top selling Civic has 143hp. The turbo model gets a 1.6L direct

injection engine with a solid 201hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque that comes on at a very low 1750 RPM. The turbo also gets a stiffer suspension, bigger wheels, sharper steering feel and shorter gear ratios from first to third gear. This makes the car livelier and handles better but it also makes the car a bit twitchy on the highway when driving straight.

The base 2.0L would be my choice. 173hp is loads for a car of this size and the smaller wheels and less aggressive suspension might be a better day-to-day driver. Ei-ther way, Kia has kicked things up a notch and both are fun to drive and never feel underpowered.

VerdictThe Forte5 starts at $19,495 and tops out at $28,395 for a turbo with navigation. The Koup comes with a few extra standard features and it runs from $20,895-$28,695. Some might think that the higher end models are getting expensive but they have features such as dimming rearview mirrors, power outside mirrors and heated rear seats that are not generally avail-able in this class.Kia has been growing steadily since it entered Canada 15 years

ago, and with new products like the Forte5 and Koup, there’s no reason to believe the trend will [email protected]

Helping get through motoring madnessDear Reader:After I get this off my chest, I am going to feel a whole lot better but I doubt you will. For it is my hope that you will be mad as hell and want to tell. We will get to that later so bear with me.I have been writing about cars, driving, and traffic safety for more than 25 years. I got into this by acci-dent, no pun intended. I had been covering the often-grisly crime beat for some years when the late Vancouver Police Supt. John Lucy told me in the late 1980s that he was transferring to the traffic division. I blanched. This guy had set up the strike force and dealt with vice in the big city. “You want blood and guts, Morgan, come and talk to me in traffic,” he said dramatically.I did and he was absolutely right. The needless carnage on our roads was, and is to this day, almost unbelievable. I say almost because the more you observe human nature the less incredible motoring mayhem appears. Simple math reveals that in order to shave even five minutes off a typical commute you have to exceed the speed limit excessively and run some very late reds. That kind of driving drives me crazy and now we get

to the nub of this column. Telling you what sends me off the edge is a form of therapy that invariably evolves into group therapy. Hence, our weekly “What Drives U Crazy?” spot in Driveway, in which we encourage you to reveal what poor driving habits send you off the deep end. Your correspondent also has a less selfish wish that by identifying this appalling behaviour we could educate the sources of our collective annoyance. I know that might be considered dreaming but let’s give it the old college try. When I talk about what burns me at gatherings, people usually say “don’t get me started” then pro-ceed to regale me with their pet peeves. As that is the purpose of this exercise, let me get you started.Five things that drive me nuts, a short putt I know. 1. Those who either won’t move more than their front wheels into an intersection on a green light or remain behind the line.2. Drivers who let cars stack up behind them because they want to make a left over a solid white centre line.3. Weaver birds who race down the curb lane then cut into traffic when they near a parked car.4. Impatient folks who try to swing around you dangerously as you proceed to park at the curb. 5. People who signal a left as the light changes to green. That last example makes me want to ram the offender through the intersection. Many more manoeuvres needle me. However, I’ll get off the couch now because I think I may have got you riled enough to share your road rage. What Drives U Crazy? – Tell me. You will feel much better for having done so. I promise.

Five misleading car namesFew things in the develop-ment of a new car are more crucial than the name.

In the case of a bland or mediocre car, it’s the last chance the marketers have

to generate some buzz. That may well be why some of the most ordinary cars have wound up with some of the

fiercest and flashiest names. Here are five inappropriate-ly named cars:1. Chevrolet Sprint – The

Sprint was built by Suzuki for Chevrolet. Pow-ered by a rather anemic three-cyl-inder engine, its acceleration off the line resem-bled not so much a sprint but more of a drunken stumble. Its Suzuki-badged counterpart was known by an equally inappro-priate name, the Swift.2. Mercury Bobcat – A bobcat is a rather fierce North American wild cat. The Mercury Bobcat, on the other hand, was essentially a fancy Ford Pinto over laden with chrome trim and other options that added on additional pounds, sacrific-ing what little performance the Pinto possessed. While the feline bobcat is plentiful in the wild, the Mercury version is all but extinct.3. Hyundai Excel — The Excel was first car sold by Hyundai in the U.S., and given the top-to-bottom excellence of the current Hyundai lineup, it’s prob-ably a car they’d prefer to forget. Other than cheap-

ness, the Excel essentially excelled at nothing — unless someone handed out an award for “crudest interior” or “oddest-smell-ing plastic.”4. AMC Hornet – The hornet is one pugnacious insect, and as anyone who has ever been on the wrong side of one can attest, they definitely can sting. With the exception of the rare S/C 360 version from 1971, the AMC Hornet was a pleasant-looking and practi-cal compact sedan/wagon/hatchback without much of a sting.5. Hudson Jet — Jet planes were on the mind of nearly every car designer and ad man in

the U.S. during the 1950s. Fins, bogus jet intakes, jet exhausts and jet hood ornaments found their way onto countless cars from that decade. Curiously, the Jet wasn’t among them. There was nothing even slightly swoopy or jet-like about the Hudson Jet. It was a thoroughly upright and conventional compact from a company that later became part of American Motors.Rob Sass is the vice-presi-dent of content for Hagerty Insurance. PENINSULA NEWS REVIEW - Friday, April 4, 2014 www.vicnews.com • A15

The Dodge Dart has held its own in a sporty compact segment where competition is fierce.Perhaps it is because of its value, the various engine choices or that it has some pretty cool features (like available under-the-front-seat-cushion storage) and a fresh style – inside and out – the Dart seems to be a hit.Two years in, Chrysler has loaded it up with an engine full of gusto, unique styling cues and added a couple of letters on the back and now we have the Dodge Dart GT.What sets it apart from its siblings are a stretched-down grille and LED head-lights. You’ll find the rear clad with the ‘racetrack’ LED lights that run the full length of the trunk. Then there’s a set of 18-inch wheels come standard on this vehicle along with a 2.4L, MultiAir, four-cyl-inder Tigershark engine, matched with a six-speed manual transmission, that brings to the pavement 184 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. Of all the characteristics I like about this trim of Dart, I think its transmission is the weakest link. In previ-ous reviews of other Dart models – like the 1.4L, Tur-bocharged version with 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque – the gear throws are, in my opinion, too long to really give it that edge and sporty vibe that it needs to compete with vehicles like the VW GTI, Honda Civic Si or even the Ford Focus ST. The gear throws are long and the clutch has little weight to it, taking away the performance aspect of the GT that it should have.On the flip side, the light clutch works favourably in the urban environment. This setup makes being stuck in traffic bearable.Getting back to the gear-box, I really wanted to like

the Dart more. I really did. So I concocted scenarios in my mind to figure out a way to not be so sad about its lack of panache. I think I found one. Buyers of the GT will like what they get for the value. After all, it has a starting MSRP of $21,995. That’s thousands less than the aforementioned compet-itors. And some buyers of vehi-cles who want that extra kick don’t necessarily need all the sports sedan-like characteristics. They want power but in a comfortable and affordable package.Furthermore, they enjoy added touches like a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, GT specific sport leather seats, a park view rear backup camera and more. The interior has a pleasant look to it and it’s very agreeable to drive. On the highway, special attention from designers and engineers were paid to make sure you drive in a quiet cabin.Minimal road noise entered the GT’s cabin, allowing my passengers and I to enjoy the musical stylings of var-ious bands being listened to on the Alpine premium stereo system with nine speakers (an additional $1,295 for this sun and sound package.) The sun

portion of the package adds a power express open/close sunroof to the mix. After I switched into this mindset, I found I was able to alleviate my frustrations of what the GT didn’t have, but what it did have.Additionally, a feature that I love about the Dart – and all other Dodge/Jeep/Chrys-ler products – is the Uco-nnect media interface. The GT comes standard with the 8.4-inch touchscreen and

is a dream to work with. Large icons, easy prompts and a no-fuss approach to pairing your handheld device to the Bluetooth system all come standard.Whether taking the GT for a drive in the city or on the open road, it does have some solid legs to stand on. Visit www.dodge.ca for more information.

Buying used? We’re looking out for you. Find out how at WatchoutforWalt.com

Noodling on the web one morning I found out that I was selling vehicles illegally. If I was in the business of selling, I need to be licensed as a dealer.Oh well. Everything’s been working out just fi ne for me. I skated through those recent bad deals. My previous sales were a distant memory – I was eager to start selling more. So, I decided to up my game a bit. I got a low-end truck and a car from an auction and another car from a new parking lot friend. I put ads for all three vehicles on Craigslist. Of course my ads said they were all real gems. You’d think people might see through my ads. “Need to sell fast, so price is fl exible. Call with best offer.” And my cell number was the same for all three. Would anybody notice? The fi rst two cheaper vehicles sold quickly. The last one took a bit longer to sell. Of course, it was the one I was most eager to sell. Why, you ask?Well, not that I passed the information along, but the auction provided vehicle history reports for the fi rst two. I had no information on the last. So, I bought ICBC and CarProof vehicle history reports. I wanted to educate myself. To my surprise, there was a statement in both reports that the vehicle was possibly “stolen*.”I knew I had to sell it fast. I mean, I’d paid for it and I knew my new “friend” wouldn’t take it back.Four days later, I got a call from a young

woman. She asked if the car would fi t a family of four. “Defi nitely!” I practically screamed. I was a wreck during this sale. I just needed to get rid of this car – fast. I told the nice lady the details of the car. Apart from being stolen, it was pretty nice!I told her I was in a hurry to visit my mum in the hospital. She was in a hurry too – her three-year-old was anxious, pulling at her pant legs. She seemed to not want to be there as much as me. Finally, she agreed to buy the car. Phew! I was saved. Whatever happens next, I don’t care. It’s her problem not mine.I quickly changed my phone number (again). Weeks later, I saw her on the news – with kid still at pant legs – talking to a reporter. Apparently, the car was towed away by the police. And yes, she was trying to fi nd me. Had I covered my tracks? I agonized.

*How can a stolen vehicle be sold? Curbers often break the law by bridging a title. Instead of registering a vehicle in their name within 10 days after a purchase, as required, they leave it in the name of the previous owner. This keeps their name out of the chain of title and from being caught with a stolen vehicle or one that would not be able to be registered or insured for another reason.

Confessions of a Curber

“Apart from being stolen, it was pretty nice!”

Rugged beauty is more than skin deepThe all-new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a luxury sport utility vehicle that attracts a lot of attention. The body styling went through some major chang-es this year and is very different to the previous version that had more chis-eled and square edges. This

vehicle is refined and more rounded. If it wasn’t for the traditional Jeep grille you would think this was a Volvo or an Audi. The first thing you notice is the new LED lighting that wraps around the HD headlamps, it gives it a sophisticated look.

Jeep did not sacrifice its off road capabilities. Options are; Quadra-Trac 1 that features full time on de-mand four-wheel drive with single speed transfer case and equal torque split (50 front/50 rear) with brake control. Quadra-Trac 11, with a two-speed transfer

case with low range and variable torque distribu-tion that delivers up to a 100 per cent front or rear. Quadra-Lift air suspension that lifts four corners of the vehicle to provide the best in class ground clearance of 272 mm that will allow you to negotiate just about any

terrain you encounter. The Summit model has a gorgeous interior, all the bells and whistles. Premium leather seats with heated/vented 12 way power front seats. The steering wheel is heated and wrapped in leather and wood. The instrument panel, doors, and centre console are also leather stitched. The power lift gate can be controlled via the remote to make life easier loading and unloading cargo. Be careful at night, with the lift gate open it’s hard to see the bottom and if you’re not careful you will be wearing the lock mechanism as a tattoo on your forehead. Don’t ask how I know. With this model, you get the navigation screen complete with a backup

camera. There is also an optional rear seat DVD system. There is an optional stability control with anti-roll, hill start assist, trailer sway control. Front air bags with reactive head rest restraints, and side curtain airbags. Forward collision warning system detects whether you are approaching another vehicle too rapidly and alerts you to take action. Parkview/ Park-sense Park assist systems that help see what perhaps you would not see when backing up. Four engine choices here. The first is a 3.0L Ecodiesel V6 that an amazing 420 lb-ft of torque and 240 horsepower. My tester was equipped with the fuel fru-gal diesel – 9.8 /7.0 L/100 km (city/highway).

I remember as a kid, wear-ing my Sunday best and then going out and playing in the mud. With this Jeep, you push a button, hike up the truck, and go have some fun.I was surprised it was able to perform off-road given the dramatic changes but like all Jeeps it is built to take a punishment. The days of bidding wars on Greater Victoria homes and deals being written on the kitchen table after a viewing seem like the distant past when considering today’s resi-dential real estate market.

Agents who have spoken to Home-finder in the past have said that’s a good thing, in that it not only allows them to spend more time working with clients to determine the right price for which to sell their home, it can give sellers more certainty and understanding of the market.

“In this kind of market, if a seller is really well prepared, for example, if the house is really well presented and ready to go, they’re going to find their experience is that much better than someone who isn’t prepared,” said Victoria Real Estate Board presi-dent Tim Ayres.

The stability of the market these days means sellers are not having to take a huge drop from their asking price, he said.

With no real upward or downward pressure on prices, the decision to sell can be one that comes when moving “feels right” to the home-owner, Ayres said.

There are still people who are not as motivated to sell and delay put-ting their home on the market, in an attempt to ride an upward wave and maximize the amount they’ll receive. Doing so can be a mug’s game, he said.

“I think timing the market is always impossible. You’ll never

know whether it was a good time to buy or sell until a few months down the road.”

In general, there is still enough product out there for buyers to be able to take their time. Conversely, sellers are also going to have to be patient, he said.

There are some exceptions to that rule, however.

As Ayres said, well-prepared, well-priced homes are still getting snapped up quickly. As well, prop-

erties in Oak Bay, Fairfield, Gordon Head and the family friendly Saanich West neighbourhoods of Glanford, Layritz and Northridge are proving popular right now, from a price and location perspective.

As well, the $400,000 to $600,000 price range seems to be a “sweet spot” for homes right now, he added.

Looking at the sales figures for Greater Victoria, sellers have reason to be optimistic.

In March, 575 properties were

sold, spread through the vari-ous residential categories. That’s a bump of nearly 20 per cent over March 2013, when the trickle-down effects of the global recession were being felt more strongly and such factors as tighter mortgage restric-tions were still pretty fresh.

Looking longer-term, the five-year average for March is 607 sales, show-ing that things are gradually getting back to normal in the region’s real estate market.

BUYING TIP | Read a blank sales agreement ahead of time to familiarize yourself with what’s involved

A stable market can work for sellers, tooSimilar homes that

have recently sold in your neighbourhood – Your real estate agent

can determine how close the seller was to receiving their asking price, and in general what people are willing to pay in your area

Take a good look at the competition –

Current listings will tell you what similar properties are on the market and which might be in competition

Homes for which the listing has
