With the official opening of its Manufacturing Workshop in Va-lenza on 17 March, Bulgari achieved an ambitious goal, a project that blends together not only an industrial investment, but first and foremost a cultural one, with what is now Europe’s largest jewellery Manufacturing Workshop. A real architectural chal-lenge, as the Workshop had to respond to the demands of high quality craftsmanship while reflecting the image and style of an international, highly creative Italian brand like Bulgari. The Jewellery Academy will be a fully-fledged in-house goldsmithing school where new employees, up to 300 over the next three years, will be able to refine their skills and put their talents to work, exploring our brand’s specific techniques and methods. The heart of the project will be the ‘intelligent hands’ of our goldsmiths who will project into the future a craft that is performed with patience and dedication, creativity and passion. A goldsmith is indeed a contemporary artist: a person who uses ancient tech-niques to propose innovative solutions. With the new Manufac-turing Workshop in Valenza, Bulgari brings together the love of beauty and traditional skill that have made Italy the world leader in jewellery and goldsmithing.

At the end of June, in the charming allure of Venice, Bulgari pre-sented Festa, the new 2017 High Jewellery Collection, celebrat-ing the joyful side of the Italian Art de Vivre. In our plans for the new Manifattu-ra, we wanted to especially focus on aspects of both en-vironmental and energy effi-ciency that aim to guarantee respect for the environment and the ecosystem, but also ensure the wellbeing and safety of our employees. The Manifattura Bulgari is also an interesting hub from a production process point of view. Like the ‘islands’, a very innovative concept that sees an item enter as a semi-finished product and exit as the finished article.”Di Roberto closes by recalling the importance of the Bulgari Academy, “We have set up a school for goldsmiths that will allow us to train our new resources for future years, lending more credi-bility to our art of jewellery

making. Objective: invest-ment in an area that has al-ways played an active role in the world of gold jewellery, despite recent stagnation due to recession in small and medium-sized enter-prises. The Academy will help us recruit young peo-ple who want to learn this craft following the Bulgari modus operandi. L’azienda negli anni Cinquanta, Ses-santa e Settanta aveva uno stile estremamente attuale. Oggi ha un segno che è uno dei più contemporanei nel settore della gioielleria. Cambia la dinamica perché il mondo odierno si trasfor-ma di continuo e assai rapi-damente. «La nuova manifat-tura di Valenza – racconta Mauro Di Roberto – è nata perché fondamentalmente ave-vamo bisogno di migliorare la nostra attività produttiva, con-

figurando una verticalizzazio-ne più spinta per gli anni a ve-nire, in base a una domanda sempre crescente. Rispetto a prima avremo finalmente tutte le funzioni sotto lo stesso tetto. Da un punto di vi-sta architettonico si voleva riproporre una struttura moderna che incarnasse l’heritage del brand, in una zona centrale per l’oreficeria italiana. «La Manifattura – osserva ancora il Jewellery Business Unit Managing Di-rector Bulgari – sorge dove c’era la prima Cascina dell’O-refice, costruita nel 1817 da Francesco Caramora, inizian-do la parabola di Valenza come uno dei più importanti distretti orafi al mondo. Nel progettare la nuova Manifat-tura abbiamo voluto prestare particolare attenzione sia agli aspetti ambientali e di efficien-za energetica volti a garantire il rispetto dell’ambiente e dell’ecosistema, ma anche al benessere e alla sicurezza dei dipendenti. La Manifattura Bulgari costituisce inoltre un polo dagli aspetti interessanti dal punto di vista del processo produttivo. Come le ‘isole’, un concetto molto innovativo, dove il prodotto entra come semila-vorato ed esce finito». Di Ro-berto conclude ricordando l’importanza della Bulgari Academy «Abbiamo creato

una scuola orafa che ci permet-terà di formare le nostre nuove risorse per i prossimi anni, dando più credibilità al nostro essere gioiellieri. Obiettivo: l’investimento in un territorio da sempre attivo nel mondo dell’oreficeria, malgrado la re-cente stagnazione dovuta a una crisi delle piccole-medio imprese. L’Academy ci aiuterà a reclutare giovani che voglio-no imparare il mestiere in base al modus operandi Bulgari. E – conclude Mauro Di Ro-berto – ce ne sono più di quan-to si possa immaginare, non solo nel Valenzano, ma su tutto l’ambito nazionale».

With ev-er-higher expectations we need to keep quality and manufacturing at top levels.”

Mauro Di Roberto feels that icons such as B.zero1, Tubo-gas and Serpenti are as total-ly linked to evolution in crea-tivity and quality as they are to the wake of the inimitable Bul-gari savoir-faire. In the fifties, sixties and seventies, the com-pany had a very up-to-date

style. Today it has one of the most contemporary looks in the jewellery sector. The dynamics have changed because today’s world sees continual, rapid transformation. “The new manufacturing unit in Va-lenza,” says Mauro Di Roberto, “was set up because basical-ly we needed to improve our production activity, with configuration of a more ag-gressive verticalisation for the years to come, based on increasing demand. Unlike previously, this would finally bring all our divisions under the one roof. This allows us to improve and optimise synergies to the max.” From

wonderful hand-painted ex-otic skins.” Garments in silk and eyewear round out the col-lection. “The manufacture that goes into our scarves and ties always manages to surprise me,” comments Mon-toya. “Hand-painted by an artist who works exclusively for us, they become unique pieces. While eyewear are totally Bulgari in different looks. La nuova Serpenti bag arricchi-sce il mondo Serpenti con una creazione complemen-tare alla classica Serpenti Forever, la chiusura con mo-tivo a scaglie è impreziosita da smalto e pietre di colore. La vera novità della stagione è però la DIVAS’ DREAM, che si rifà all’omonima col-lezione di gioielli: «Il segno che la caratterizza è reinter-pretato nella chiusura, ancora più preziosa. La collezione per l’autunno del 2017 lancia più varianti, dalla Quilted Studs di imprinting rock a quelle re-alizzate con preziosi pellami esotici dipinti a mano». Non solo il serpente – Roma e Bulgari condividono il pa-vone, sacro e profano, tra mi-stica paleocristiana, opu-lenza cinquecentesca e stilizzazione art nouveau. Un pavone la cui coda a venta-glio iridescente di colori densi come le pietre delle creazioni Bulgari. Ancora: la maestà, la nobiltà e la poten-za del leone, onnipresente monarca di questo bestiario fantastico ed emblematico. L’artista e designer lombar-do Luca Artioli, che del mondo animale ha fatto il proprio principale ambito poetico, ha saputo interpre-tare questo tema specifico con una serie di collage poli-materici. Texture sapienti e

armoniche che accostano tessuti e carta da parati o da pacco, intrecciando astrazio-ne e ricerca figurativa in un narrativo solco animalier. Bulgari è Roma e Roma è Bulgari. È un gioco cangian-te che apre territori onirici, delineando dimensioni di suggestione. Una reciproca e profonda appartenenza, quella tra la Maison romana e la Città Eterna, che si rivela attraverso un universo di simboli e di ispirazioni, di frammenti e allegorie prove-nienti dalla letteratura, dalla poesia, dall’archeologia e dall’architettura.

Symbols for Rome and Bulgari are filled with real or fanciful images of animals. Linked to centuries-old names for streets, buildings and important mon-uments in Rome, they feature on heraldic patrician shields or in the dialogue between mar-ble, travertine and splashing waters in the many renaissance and baroque fountains that provide the soundtrack for everyday life in the city. The snake represents eternity and the power of seduction, and lends its name to a street not far from Piazza del Popolo. A dis-tant, timeless sign that unites Rome and Maison Bulgari, continually revealed in paint-ings and the decorative arts, hypnotically and cunningly emerging in mosaics, frescos and sculptures from the classic period. But the snake is not

alone—Rome and Bulgari also share the peacock, sacred and profane, borrowed from paleo Christian mysticism, six-teenth-century opulence and art nouveau stylisation. A pea-cock whose fanned tail is iri-descent with dense colours like the stones in creations by Bul-gari. Plus the majesty, nobility and strength of the lion, the ever-present monarch of this fantastic, symbolic bestiary. This specific theme has been

ably interpreted with a series of multi-material collages by Luca Artioli, the artist and de-signer from Lombardy, who has turned the animal world into his main poetic muse. Skil-ful, harmonious textures that team fabrics and wall or wrap-ping paper weave abstraction and figurative research in an animalier narrative trend. Bulgari is Rome and Rome is Bulgari. It is an iridescent game that leads to dreamlike territories where awesome di-mensions take shape. A recip-rocal and profound sense of belonging shared by the Ro-man company and the Eternal

City, revealed in a universe of symbols and inspirations, of fragments and allegories bor-rowed from literature, poetry, archaeology and architecture.

Festa di Bulgari, così la Mai-son annuncia la nuova colle-zione di High Jewellery 2017 che verrà presentata a fine giugno a Venezia. Un mondo che rievoca principesse dall’animo rock e la tradizio-ne delle feste italiane. In oc-casione dell’evento anche l’anteprima di The Joy of Gems, primo libro dedicato alle collezioni High Jewel-lery, alle pietre preziose e alla manifattura che li hanno resi celebri in tutto il mon-

do. Più colorato che mai: Larger than Life, secondo il mantra che racchiude la filo-sofia Bulgari. La collezione, creata da Lucia Silvestri, di-rettore creativo della gioiel-leria della Maison – che con-fida «realizzarla è stata una gioia assoluta» –, consta di circa cento pezzi e omaggia i centosessant’anni dalla na-scita del fondatore Sotirio Bulgari. Un mosaico di gem-me, approdate negli atelier di Bulgari da ogni parte del mondo. Zaffiri, smeraldi – tra cui Il Grandioso, colom-biano di 57 ct –, rubini, come quello circondato da dia-manti dell’anello omaggio a piazza Navona o l’altro, mo-zambicano di 12,10 ct, che impreziosisce il collier Cuore di Roma. Una sezione della collezione è dedicata a prin-cipesse vissute a Roma in varie epoche, a cominciare dalla più avventurosa prota-

gonista dell’età del barocco, Anna Maria Mancini, moglie del principe Lorenzo Ono-frio I Colonna. Ecco rivivere il suo gusto nel sautoir Royal Pearls. A Paolina Bonaparte, la ‘Venere Imperiale’, si rife-risce invece il necklace Il Magnifico, con l’omonimo zaffiro ‘pain de sucre’ di 180 ct, incastonato in una catena di diamanti. La regina Mar-gherita di Savoia, consorte di Umberto I, amava una lunga catena doppia compo-sta da nodi in diamanti. Ben otto pezzi della collezione High Jewellery 2017, fra i quali spicca la triplice cate-na di perle con due fermagli a nodo in zaffiri e diamanti, guardano a questa simbolo-gia, mentre al disegno esa-gonale della Sala da Ballo rococò di Stupinigi rimanda il pendente in smeraldo co-lombiano a cuscinetto di 59 ct, fulcro della collana Royal Ball Room.

A world that evokes princesses with rock in their soul and the tradition of Italian festivals. The event will also feature presentation of The Joy of Gems, the first book dedicated to the High Jewellery collections, to pre-cious stones and the crafts-manship that has brought them fame the world over. More colourful than ever: Larger than Life, according to the mantra that embraces the Bulgari philosophy. De-signed by Lucia Silvestri, crea-tive director of the company’s

jewellery—who confides that “designing it was an abso-lute joy”—the collection in-cludes some one hundred piec-es and celebrates the one hundred and sixtieth anniver-sary of the birth of the founder Sotirio Bulgari. A mosaic of gems that have come to the Bulgari atelier from every part of the world. Sapphires, emer-alds—including the 57 ct. Il Grandioso from Colombia—rubies, like the one surrounded by diamonds on the ring that homages Piazza Navona or the other 12.10 ct. one from Mozambique, which decorates the Cuore di Roma choker. One section of the collection is dedicated to princesses who lived in Rome at various times in history, starting with the most exciting character from the Baroque period, Anna Ma-ria Mancini, wife of Prince Lorenzo Onofrio I Colonna. Her taste lives on in the Royal Pearls sautoir. Whereas Paul-ine Bonaparte, the ‘Imperial Venus’, is honoured by the Il Magnifico necklace, with the 180 ct. ‘pain de sucre’ sapphire of the same name set into a chain of diamonds. Queen Margherita of Savoy, wife to Umberto I, loved a long double chain made of diamond knots. This symbolism features in no fewer than eight pieces from the High Jewellery 2017 col-lection, including the outstand-ing triple pearl chain with two knotted sapphire and diamond clasps, while the pendant with its 59 ct. cushion-cut Colombi-an emerald on the Royal Ball-room necklace copies the hex-agonal design of the rococo Ballroom at Stupinigi.

A Valenza, in Piemonte, nel territorio del Monferrato, città orafa per eccellenza, in soli diciotto mesi è nata Ma-nifattura Bulgari, il nuovo avveniristico stabilimento del brand romano. Un com-plesso pensato dallo studio di architettura Open Project, che si compone di otto corpi di fabbrica con caratteri completamente differenti, in cui sono situa-ti diciotto laboratori corri-

spondenti ad altrettante fasi del processo creativo di un gioiello. Manifattura Bulgari è una realizzazione senza precedenti, che ideal-mente, già nelle sue linee progettuali, getta un ponte fra tradizione e innovazio-ne. Punto di partenza, la Cascina dell’Orefice, che risale al 1860, primo vero laboratorio orafo valenza-no. Una struttura dotata di un forte valore storico e simbolico, che è stata rico-struita e ampliata con una texture tecnologica intera-mente concepita in acciaio e vetro, che in chiave con-temporanea ricalca i con-torni originari di quell’anti-

ca fucina di meraviglie. La Glass House, che per Bulgari avrà funzioni rappresenta-tive e di ospitalità, sia a li-vello di architettura che di interior design, tramite moti-vi e materie simboliche, ri-flette l’inconfondibile con-notazione stilistica della Maison. Il secondo edificio, articolato su tre piani e in-torno a una luminosa corte interna, miscelando esteti-ca ed efficienza high-tech ha invece una destinazione prettamente produttiva. La nuova Manifattura per Bul-gari non è soltanto un inve-stimento industriale ma, oltre al profondo significato di tradizione, riassume in sé il senso di un’identità, del DNA sia del marchio che di un luogo con una spiccata vocazione. Grande attenzio-ne è stata prestata ai criteri di sostenibilità e impatto ambientale, benessere e si-curezza delle maestranze. Un ulteriore aspetto di ri-cerca di innovazione volta a perseguire il raggiungi-mento della certificazione internazionale LEED (Lea-dership in Energy and En-vironment Design) entro la fine del 2017.

In Valenza, in Piedmont, eighteen months was all it took to build the Manifattura Bul-gari, the futuristic new factory belonging to this Roman jew-ellery brand, located in Mon-ferrato, the city of gold jewel-

lery par excellence. Designed by the Open Project firm of architects, the complex com-prises eight units with com-pletely different characteris-tics that house eighteen laboratories, each one corre-sponding to a separate stage in the creative process of a jewel. Manifattura Bulgari is an unprecedented creation that ideally, even at the design stage, provides a bridge be-tween tradition and innova-tion. The starting point was the Cascina dell’Orefice, a building dating back to 1860, the first real goldsmith’s work-shop in Valenza. With huge historic and symbolic value, this farmhouse was rebuilt and expanded with a techno texture entirely conceived in steel and glass, a modern-day copy of the original outlines of that ancient birthplace of wonders. The Glass House, which will be used by Bulgari for reception purposes and hospitality, features motifs and symbolic materials in its architecture and interior de-sign, a reflection of the unmis-takable style personality of this Maison. The second build-ing, three storeys set around a light-filled inner courtyard, mixes aesthetics and hi-tech efficiency and is destined purely for production. The new Manifattura is not just an industrial investment for Bul-gari as, beyond its deep signif-icance in terms of tradition, it embodies the sense of an iden-tity, of the DNA of both the brand and a location with a

distinctive vocation. Top prior-ity has been given to the crite-ria of sustainability and envi-ronmental impact, and to health and safety in the work-place. This further aspect of pursuit of innovation aims to achieve international LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environment De-sign) by the end of 2017.
