• It does not literally mean the creation of drugs or medical devices that are unique to a patient but rather the ability to classify individuals into subpopulations that differ in their susceptibility to a particular disease or their response to a specific treatment.

• HLA專指人類的MHC，是第六對染色體上的一個基因座所編碼出與免疫系統有關的一大群抗原。在HLA基因座中，包含了六個基因，其中對應到MHC class I的，分別為A、B、C。其中的B基因，即稱為「HLA-B」。HLA基因有高度多形性，光HLA-B就有上百種版本，必需要有一套命名系統，才能以茲區別。「WHO命名委員會」決議，以四碼數字代表，前二碼數字為血清型，後二碼數表相同血清型的不同基因亞型。這組數字與基因名稱之間必需以「＊」加以區隔。因此， HLA-B*1502乃指：HLA-B第15號血清型中的第2號亞型。


• 藥物Carbamazepine在某些情況下，會引發Stevens-Johnson syndrome及 toxic epidermal necrolysis等嚴重副作用，據國人在漢人族群的研究，此種情形與個體帶有HLA-B*1502基因亞型有100%相關性。因此，HLA-B*1502可作為Carbamazepine藥害的基因標記。
