    aboutparachute

THE COOL, THE CLASSIC, THE ORIGINAL. Parachute landed in , but it wasnt till

that it started operating as a ull-scale type oundry. By then several designers had

    joined in to orm a select group o open-minded, ree-spirited indivinduals/riends. Graphic

designers, illustrators, educators, typographers, with resh ideas and a strong desire to

design sophisticated typeaces which reflect current cultures and trends. Parachute is

based in Athens and is the major ont supplier to most publishing houses and advertisingagencies in Greece. It has built a strong network o valuable relationships with custom-

ers in Europe, United States, Canada and Australia, by providing custom ont services and

corporate ont licensing. Its clientelle includes multinational companies such asIkea, Vo-

dafone, Nestle and Unilever, advertising agencies such as DDB, Leo Burnett, McCann

Erickson, BBDO, Saatchi & Saatchi, Lowe, TBWA, Spot Thompson, publications such

asNational Geographic, Playboy, FHM, Elle, Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Marie Claire,

PC Magazine, Lucky, PC World, Votre Beautand many, many others. In the last

years Parachutes designers (a.k.a. Parachuters) have won three major typeace design

awards, while their work has been eatured and extensively presented in design-oriented

magazines. The year marked the beginning o a new era or Parachute with the

release o a major -page catalog, which contained Greek and Latin typeace speci-

mens. This catalog/book included several classic revivals o historical importance, as well

as many original ont designs. Since then an emphasis was placed on multilingual support

and OpenType technology. In the spring o Parachutes first opentype Pro ont

was released. Archive Proan award winning typeace with multilingual support (over

. glyphs/ont), kerning or all European languages as well as advanced typographic

eatures, was first presented at theAdobe Creative Days orum, which was held

in Athens, Greece. From then on, all Parachute onts have been redesigned to offer multi-

lingual support, which includes major scripts such as Latin, Greek and Cyrillic.

OpenType is a new ont ormat developed jointly by Adobe and Microsof. This tech-

nology is becoming the new world standard or ont development. There are three ma-

jor advantages over older ormats such as TrueType and Postscript: 1.Cross-platorm

compatibility (a single file or both PC and Mac offering absolute compatibility between

the two platorms) 2.Multilingual support (multiple language character sets can be ac-

cessed rom the same ont). This is particularly useul to advertising agencies, publishinghouses, multinational corporations and every other company small or large with accounts

and products with an international lair. Most Parachute onts come complete with a ull

range o characters to support all European languages 3.Advanced layout eatures (an

exciting unction which provides access to advanced typographic eatures such as small

caps, ligatures, oldstyle figures, swashes, etc). They enable the discriminating designer to

set text proessionally and add a touch o class to the page. Parachute openType onts

with advanced layout eatures and multilingual support are distinguished rom the other

simple openType onts by the word Prowhich is part o the ont name. The advanced

layout eatures cannot be accessed unless they are supported by your programs. Currently

(early ), only InDesignCS, IllustratorCS, PhotoshopCS and QuarkXpress7 support these

    advanced eatures.

THE DESIGN OF PARACHUTE FONTS. Parachute onts are designed by indivinduals who

are amiliar with Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. These are designers who have studied the par-

ticulars o each and every script in order to provide sophisticated, well-balanced, properly

kerned and proessionally designed typeaces in all different languages. Parachute online

onts are offered exclusively in OpenType ormat and they are released only afer they

have been thoroughly tested and reviewed.

    How to typeMultilingual text

Its never been easier to type or edit multilingual text. All you need is: 1.a program

which supports opentype onts (see below), 2.switch your keyboard to the languages

you are interested in and 3.use opentype onts which support the speciic languages

(Parachute onts support all European languages). Please note that i you only need to

edit an existing multilingual text i.e. copy/paste or change onts, you dont have to add or

switch keyboards.HOW TO SWITCH KEYBOARDS. First you add the new languages to the system. The

steps are similar on both platorms 1.On the PC (Windows XP) you go to the section and choose . Select and

ollow the instructions to add the new languages (or earlier versions please reer to their

manuals). Once added, you can switch between keyboards through the language bar

that appears on the desktop or through a key sequence 2.On the Mac (MacOsX) you

go to and select . Then you choose

and checkmark the languages you want to add. Once added, you can switch between

keyboards through the language palette which appears on the desktops menu ba r or

through a key sequence. Please visit Parachutes web site or click on the ollowing link to go directly to the support page. View them on screen

    or download or your reerence.

ABOUT GREEK POLYTONIC. Add Greek Polytonic to the system by ollowing above in-

structions. Once added, you need to know the key combinations or typing your text.

Please visit Parachutes web site or click on the ollowing link to go directly to the . View the typing instructions on screen or download

    or your reerence.

MAJOR PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT OPENTYPE. Currently (early ), the programs

known to support OpenType are: InDesignCS, IllustratorCS, PhotoshopCS, Microsof Office,

HANDBOOK PRO. This typeace is the result o an attempt to modernize , by

introducing round smooth corners and distinct design elements to several characters like

a, g, k, m, without compromising legibility. In act this is a balanced typeace which works

very well in long texts at small point sizes. Handbook Procomes loaded with a number

o special eatures. The amily consists o onts -rom black to extra thin- including

true italics. It supports special opentype eatures like small caps, ractions, ordinals, etc. and offers multilingual support or all European languages including Greek and Cyrillic.

There is also a set o very interesting stylistic alternates which can be used to add a

rereshing flair to your designs. Finally, every ont in this amily has been completed with

copyright-free symbols, some o which have been proposed by several interna-

tional organizations or packaging, public areas, environment, transportation, computers,

    1. OLDSTYLE FIGURES: Changes selected figures rom the deault lining to oldstyle i.e. numbers o

varying height. These are appropriate or use with lowercase text. They come in two different styles:

tabular and proportional. Tabular figures have equal widths (useul or tables, so that numbers line

up rom one line to the next) whereas proportional have varying widths and are basically used within

    a sentence.

    5. SMALL CAPS: This eature ormats lowercase text as small caps. These are not computer

generated scaled-down versions o capitals, but rather glyphs which have been designed to match

the weight and proportions o the rest o the amily characters. They are ofen used in combination

with oldstyle figures, or acronyms and abbreviations and stylistically at the beginning o a paragraph
