The 53-mile-long Houston Ship Channel

is one o the nation’s busiest waterways,

providing a link between the world and

Houston, the ourth-largest city in the U.S.

The most prominent fxtures along the channel

are the world’s second-largest petrochemical

complex and the diverse public and private

acilities that comprise the Port o Houston.

As one o the world’s largest seaports, Houston handles more oreign water-

borne tonnage than any other U.S. port. Each year, cargo is moved throug

the Port o Houston through more than 8,000 ship calls and 150,000 bar

transports. More than 100 steamship lines oer service between Houston

and more than 1,000 ports around the world.

The Port o Houston Authority (PHA) is a

public entity that handles general cargo that

is distributed to the more than 50 million

people who live within 500 miles o the port.

The port authority handles about 35 million

tons o cargo per year. PHA is responsible oreight primary cargo terminals and one cruise

terminal. The public acilities owned and

operated by the Port o Houston Authority

handle virtually every type o cargo, including

containers, general cargo, grain, dry bulk

materials and project and heavy-lit cargo.

A vast network o interstate highways and

rail connect Houston with inland markets,

and each o the Port o Houston’s various

acilities is in close proximity to major highway arteries. Nearly 1,200 nonlocal truck lines

handle cargo in the Houston metropolitan

area, including specialty cargo carriers

(e.g., oilield equipment haulers, tank-truck

lines, household goods) and common carriers

operating daily scheduled service between

Houston and other major U.S. cities.

According to data analyzed by Martin

Associates, marine cargo activities at the

public and private marine terminals

located along the Houston Ship

Channel generate signiicant eco-

nomic impact throughout Houston

and the surrounding region. More

than 785,000 jobs in Texas are

related to cargo movement and other

activities at the port.

 A statewide total o $39.3 billion o personal

income and expenditures was generated inTexas rom direct, induced, indirect and related

jobs at the port. Business activities aected

by the port generated nearly $118 billion

o statewide economic beneit. These s

activities resulted in generation o $3.7 b

o state and local taxes in the state.

Two dozen Houston-based companies

rank among the 2006 Fortune 500, ma

Houston the third largest concentration

the nation. More than hal o the 100 la

non-U.S. corporations and 20 oreign b

have operations in Houston. A consula

corps comprised o oicials rom 91 nat works diligently to promote Houston’s

in global trade and commerce.

More than 50 million people live within 500 miles o the city

The Fentress Bracewell Barbours Cut

Container Terminal is the largest inter-

modal acility on the U.S. Gul o Mexico.

The Port o Houston handles 69.6 percent

o the containerized cargo market in the

U.S. Gul and 95.5 percent o the containers

moving through Texas. Much o that activity

takes place at Barbours Cut.

The six berths at Barbours Cut provide 6,000 eet o continuous quay

with 13 whar cranes. The acility is designed or maximum eiciency

and includes a roll-on/roll-o platorm, a LASH dock, paved marshaling

area, two 100,000 square-oot transit sheds, and an on-site rail ramp. A computerized inventory control system tracks the status and location

o individual containers, and customers can monitor the status o their

container shipments via the Port o Houston Authority’s Web site.

sustainaBle commitment

 to the environment

The Port o Houston Authority is nationally recognized as a leader in environmental stewardsh

or its use o best practices to reduce the

impact o port activity on the environment. As

the frst U.S. port to meet the rigorous standar

o ISO 14001 compliance, the Port o Houston

Authority sets the standard or reducing waste,

increasing eorts to recycle, reduce energy usag

and improving air and water quality.

The Port of Houston Authority has established an extensive marsh restoration

in Galveston Bay. Over a 50-year period, more than 200 million cubic yards of

rial dredged during the deepening and widening of the Houston Ship Channe

be used to create 4,250 acres of marsh, upland and bird habitats.

A completed Goods Movement Air Emission

Inventory is the baseline for a comprehensive,

long-term Clean Air Strategy Plan for the port

authority. The use of best management practices

and continuous training help monitor and reduce

impacts to storm water runoff. The port authority continues to identify new opportunities to reduce,

reuse and recycle materials on a port-wide scale,

from the offices to the maintenance shops. The

port authority is examining new technologies

and opportunities for increasing energy efficiency

and savings.

The Port Authority believes the foundation

of sustainability is built on strong leadership,

solidified by employee support and is successful

when a balance between people, planet and profit

is achieved. The port authority’s many years as the

nation’s leading port on environmental issues have

given it a definite head start with key partners to

work with along the way.
