Facts

• A British survey found that 40% of people had not written by hand in the past six months.

• In the USA it is no longer mandatory for teaching of any kind of handwriting. • A French study in 2013 has found that handwriting is essential in developing

reading skills. – Children who learnt words for spelling by hand were able to more accurately

recall them for reading and writing. – They called this a “reading circuit” Source: “Les élèves doivent garder la main !” Science et Vie. Août 2013.

Progression in handwriting

Year 1 4-5 times per week Securing letter size (including Capitals) Ascenders and Descenders Letters on line Begin joining (lead in)

Mini whiteboards Handwriting Books with tramlines Focus into transferring skills into other areas of learning. Links in with spellings and phonics.

Year 2 4-5 times per week Continue learning joins Break letters Skip lines (smaller lined books) Continue to focus on letter size Intervention where necessary

Handwriting books Joined up spellings

Year 3 + Intervention – where necessary Handwriting reinforced 3x weekly Skip lines Pen licence at the end of Year 3

Handwriting books leading into handwriting in normal sized literacy books. Joined up spellings

Can you sort the alphabet into the groups that are similarly formed? Some will be in several groups.

a) C curve letters b) Down, up and over letters c) Letters that descend below the line d) Tall letters e) x height letters

Remember the 3 P’s • Posture • Pencil • Paper

Page 12: Phase A Parents’ Handwriting · PDF filePhase A Parents’ Handwriting Workshop Ros Morgan Natasha Flood 20Precursive%20Lined%201%20Alphabet.pdf

• Paper and pencil position: • Encourage your child to hold the paper with other hand. • Lighting • When writing: Children should ensure their hand is underneath their

writing rather than to the side. If it is to the side, when the hand moves across the page it can smudge if ink is being used.

Left handers

• Sitting position

• Position paper so that it is completely to left of child (never let it cross midline).

• Angle paper (you will need to do this for them) at a parallel angle to forearm (approx 45° angle – much greater than right handers) – use tape so chn know where to put paper.

• Specialist products (scissors, rulers, pens etc.)

Joining Sets

Page 16: Phase A Parents’ Handwriting · PDF filePhase A Parents’ Handwriting Workshop Ros Morgan Natasha Flood 20Precursive%20Lined%201%20Alphabet.pdf

Common Errors •Grip •Writing not sitting on line •Trunk letters at same height •Ascenders and descenders are at correct height. •Letter formation •Letters not joined correctly •Letter spacing. •Corrections: One line crossed through •Pressure. •Poor fine and gross motor skills/ muscle tone

Resources used in school

• Nelson thornes program • Handwriting books and sharp pencils • Whiteboards and pens • Brain gym • Triangular pencils • Go over children’s hands to form • General strength and fine motor development exercises • Practical activities – sandpaper letters, paint, sand, chalks, fat felt pens,

How can you help at home?

Correct formation

Ascenders and descenders

Pencil grip

Letters on line

Finger spaces

Use large pens – helps tripod grip

BUT….. If it all becomes too much… wait and try another day.

Short and sweet – as with anything

Ask class teacher for help.

Reception – size/ neatness not a massive problem – focus on formation

End of reception/ early year 1 – focus on reducing size – consistency.

Please………………..

• Additional handwriting support at home – only with support of teacher (be careful of over burdening your child)

• Little and often • Focus on formation – over neatness and size • Later focus on size
