Mindoro is the seventh largestisland in the Philippines by land areawith a total of 10,571 km2 and with atotal population greater than 1,000,000. It is located off the southwestern coastof Luzon and northeast of Palawan.Mindoro is divided into two
provinces Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro.Oriental Mindoro is the more populous of the 2 sections of Mindoro. Calapan onthe north?east coast is theadministrative capital, but most visitors head to the Puerto Galera area, 48 milesaway. The area aroundPuerto Galera has a very busy tourist season from October to June, so the areais well catered for by inter?island ferries, tourist accommodation, markets, restaurants and bars, western?style deli?s and grocerystores.Occidental Mindoro is the more isolated, less populated section of Mindoro. Itsmain attraction is the diving areas ofSablayan and Pandan Islands,Moving about Mindoro at night may be unwise, as there are many unlit fishingboats working atnight without lights along the coasts.
