PHYSICS INVESTIGATORY PROJECT ON
PROTECTING A CIRCUIT USING A DIODE
Do you know how a clock operates? The hands of the clock run in a clockwise direcDon because the motor runs in the same direcDon. Now, if the
direcDon of the baIery is reversed, the clock will stop. This happens because the diode is present in the clock circuit which prevents the motor to run in the anD-‐clockwise direcDon.
In this project, you will need a resistor, a diode, a DC motor and a few connecDng wires. The connecDons are made such that the resistor is
connected in series with the parallel combinaDon of the diode and the motor. AMer the compleDon of the circuit, the motor starts to rotate. When the
baIery connecDons are reversed, the motor stops to rotate. The two phenomena were reasoned doing the current path analysis in both the cases. Thus, the diode ensures that the motor does not rotate in the opposite direcDon when the baIery connecDons are reversed.
