Pronunciation of “e” in compound vowels

• In “ie” and ”üe” , “e” sounds like “e” in “ned (norsk)”xié quē鞋 ( shoe ) 缺 (lack)

• In “ei”, “en”, “eng” and “er”, “e” sounds like “e” in “le(franske)”, but longer gěi hěn lěng èr

给 (give ) 恨 ( hate ) 冷 ( cold) 二 (two)

Marking tones in pinyin• Tonal marks are written above the main vowel of a syllable. The main

vowel can be identified according to the following sequence: ɑ-o-e-i-u-ü.

For instance, in ɑo the main vowel is ɑ. In ei the main vowel is e.

• There is one exception: when i and u are combined into a syllable, the tone mark is written on the second vowel: iù,uì.
