Prof. Wu Jiang, Vice President, Tongji University shares how Shanghai has developed very fast in the last 20 years with the planning of this city's clear aim to make Shanghai to be modern, sustainable and competitive. 新市镇 New towns

“New town” means a small-sized town developed from rural towns with favorable geographic and good economic development condition. Population of which is supposed to be around 50-100 Thousands.

“New Cities” is where the district Government is located, or based on development of important industries and urban major infrastructures. The planed population of each new city is supposed to be more than 300-500 thousands.

虹桥综合交通枢纽 Hongqiao Transportation Hub 6

The pivotal airport will be built based on Pudong and Hongqiao International Airports. Annual passenger throughput for Pudong airport 70 millions. Annual passenger throughput for Hongqiao airport 45 millions.

市域轨道交通 Metro Railway System

Total 19 lines/ 976km, will complete in 2020,and 13 lines/450km in 2012.

绿化规划 Greenery system Greenery system consists of Ring, Wedge, corridor, Park and Forest. The public green space per-capita will be increased to 10m² and the greenery rate will be over 30% in urbanized area . Plan Chongming Island to a ecological island, as a “green lung” of the city.

19 National Relics Units approved by the Central Government 632 Architectural Heritages(2138 Buildings, total 4 million m²) approved by Shanghai Municipality 1000 million m² “preserved” buildings

There are 12 Historic Areas in the central city of Shanghai, which is 27 k㎡, about one third of old Shanghai. And 32 historic areas in suburb, which show small towns or villages with traditional characters.
