ma ital home and even to a e tain extentmatte s whi h pe tained to thei wives.D ing the 16 yea s the Labo Pa ty wasin gove nment, between 1971 and 1987,it did nothing to hange this n o t natestate o ext eme dis imination againstwomen in ma iage, despite hanging so ial

i mstan es in a g eatly hanged wo ld.Simila ly, it is the d ty o the state, in thesedi e ent times, to p ovide a legal amewo k

o ohabitation o tside ma iage in bothhete osex al and homosex al elationships.

The Nationalist Pa ty wants the best o allthese amilies, all these o ples. Whe e the ea e hild en o othe v lne able pe sons, wea e pa ti la ly on e ned to see that thebest is done o them, that they get the best

a e possible within the home and that the eis no ab se.

And yet, j st 10 yea s ago, Joseph M s at and theLabo Pa ty we e doing all they o ld to ens ethat we wo ld stay o t o E ope, and that yowo ld be denied E opean union itizenship andall the bene ts and p ivileges that ome with it. Joseph M s at b ilds his edentials as a E opeanlibe al on his vote against Eu membe ship, on his

ampaign to keep Malta o t o the E opean union.Now, he is a ompanied by a new dep ty leade

who does exa tly the same thing, who has been p tto the ele to ate as the libe al and E opean a eo the Labo Pa ty b t who, by his own admissionin a e ent inte view, voted No to Eu membe ship

o Malta. This is the inhe ent ont adi tion in theLabo Pa ty and its politi ians: they a e at wa withthei own belie s.

In the last nine yea s, Malta has made a h ges ess o Eu membe ship and eve y itizenhas eaped the bene ts in one way o anothe ,di e tly o indi e tly, whethe they voted o Eumembe ship o , like Joseph M s at and Lo isG e h, voted against. We have joined the E ozoneand adapted easily to the se o the e o. We have joined S hengen and move abo t eely. Malta has

eve y inte est in emaining at the hea t o E opeand not isolated on the inges.
