Afternoon all. So it’s FA cup day, days every player looks forward to

each season, it’s the unknown of what’s ahead, could this be the year we make history for the club?! You ask yourself the same question each year, but once again 1st round proper is our aim. I’m desperate to lead the club there, somewhere it hasn’t been, but it’s a long way off right now and in our way today in Barnstable Town, a lower league club but as we all know, that means nothing in this competition and I’m sure it will be a tough tie!

We had a successful bank holiday weekend, picking up six points and finishing it in style smashing a poor Frome side here on the Monday. Unfortunately since then we failed to pick up points in a long trip up to Kings Lynn. The club were great and put us all up there on the Friday night, preparation was per-fect, unfortunately myself and Walker were suspended for

that game, not ideal at all but that’s football. Lewis [Lindsay] and Spetch came in for us and I thought they both did very well. We lost the game 3-2 but did so well after going 2-0 and showed great character to come back to 2-2, to then concede late on was a hard pill to swallow but we have to learn from it and move on.

We’ve improved massive-ly in recent weeks and as a team are gaining confidence game by game, let’s hope that’s continues today! Get behind the lads!

This afternoon I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Directors, Players and Supporters of Barnstaple Town FC.

who have not, to the best of my knowledge, been to Tatnam Farm before. I know some of our more ‘clued up’ supporters may tell me I’m wrong but welcome to our Devon visitors anyway and a hope for a competitive match in the true spirit of Non League.

The start of this 2015/16 Season has been a bit like the ‘curates egg’ - good in parts. I have worried since last April that it would take a long time for our lads to get over the title being snatched away by Corby in such nerve tingling fashion and our subsequent play off defeat at the hands of St.Neots. However, the squad, virtually intact from the previous sea-son started off in impressive fashion against Kettering one of the fancied new boys in our Premier League.

This was followed by a hard fought draw away at Hungerford and a scintillating away win at St.Neots which went some way towards avenging our play off result. Against a rejuvenated Chippenham side we were distinctly second best and did not perform to our usual standards on the night losing 1-3. I did not attend the Merthyr game but under-stand it was a fair result given the strength of our visitors.

I did however, go to Slough and was im-pressed by our performance against a dour but uninventive opposition which resulted in a good and convincing win. We then had the goal feast against Frome who are among my favourites for relegation this term. It was therefore, with confidence, that we faced the long trip to Kings Lynn and our preparation was as good as it could be with an overnight stay to avoid playing immediately after a 250 mile trip.

Unfortunately, and despite our best efforts, we lost a close contest by the odd goal and it must have been a dejected atmosphere on the way home. Such atmospheres are thank-fully rare on the Poole Town coach and only

a fool or a sublime optimist would expect us not to have the odd blip along the way to our Championship. I say this not in vain hope but in a genuine ex-pectancy that we will get better as the year goes on and that we probably have the best squad of players in the league.

It is vital that we win today as both the excitement of the competition and the prize money it brings are pivotal in sustaining our growth as a club. I am not being disrespectful to Barnstaple when I say we are favourites to win being the senior club but as we all know this is the F.A.Cup and anything can happen! Let’s make sure it is a clinical performance from the boys this afternoon and I can go to a friends 70th birthday tonight with a smile on my face.

One caveat to the above optimism is that we cannot go forward without increasing crowd support and I would urge all those of you who are committed to ‘The Cherries’ to come on down to us when it is impossible for you to attend a Home match because of ticket limitations. Obviously you have your first preferences in AFCB but we would love to see you more regularly here in Poole to enjoy our own brand of hospitality and entertainment.

Poole’s five game unbeaten streak on the road spanning four months finally came to an end

after a spirited performance ended in a 3-2 loss to King’s Lynn.

Poole’s first ever fixture against the newly formed King’s Lynn town ended in defeat, after coming back from 2-0 to 2-2, before the Linnets snatched all three points with 13 minutes to go.

Poole were obviously without the suspended defensive duo of Jamie Whisken and Michael Walker, mean-ing that Steve Devlin was Captain. However, Killick’s matchday squad was strengthened with the returns of Lewis Lindsay and Keith Emmerson, from injury and illness respectively, and attacking jewel Luke Burbidge, coming back into the side after being on holiday.

Neither side got a real grip on the game in the early stages, as both sides had multiple attacks, with the hosts content with shooting from range in the opening exchanges. Will Spetch, playing at centre back for the

first time this season, was involved in some very good defending, with some well timed blocks and tackles.

After about ten minutes, Poole slow-ly grew into the games, as good link up play between the attackers caused a few problems for the Linnets’ defence. However, the first goal of the game came from a corner – Ryan Fryatt getting on the end of a cross to poke the ball home in the 22nd minute to give the hosts a goal advantage.

Like last week out at Slough, Poole almost made an immediate response, as Burbidge broke free, with Gillespie running in support. Burbidge laid it off to Gillespie, who fired high over the bar as the ball cruelly bounced up at the wrong moment, a golden opportu-nity wasted.

Poole slowly turned up the heat, Gillespie fashioning a good chance for himself, before missing the target again. Sadly, Gillespie picked up an injury, which brought an abrupt end to his afternoon, being replaced with Connell in the 40th minute. The last

MATCH REPORT MATCH REPORTchance of the half came to the home side, as Hutchings did well to get down to a low shot to his right.

There were no changes at the break, and two minutes into the second half, Roberts went on a mazy run, beating two defenders before succumbing to a foul. The resultant free kick was cleared, but only to Lewis Tallack, who whipped it back onto the head of Roberts, who placed it high and wide.

In the 55th minute, Cluman spotted Nick Hutchings off his line, and quickly placed the ball over the keeper into the back of the net. Killick obviously saw the need for a tactical switch up, as activity on the bench saw Luke Holmes come on for Pettefer in the 58th minute.

As Poole were looking for a way back into the game, they won a foul on the halfway line, which was whipped in by Devlin, only to find the head of Kern Miller, who promptly flicked the ball past the despairing arms of his own keeper, into the bottom right of the net. 20 minutes left, and one goal for the Dolphins needed to bring a point back from the East coast. That goal arrived in the form of Luke Roberts, as a minute after Jamie Gleeson came on for Marvin Brooks, managed to fire the ball into the net after a goal-line scramble, much to the delight of the Poole fans behind the goal.

Their joy was short lived, as Linnet substitute Sam Mulready did very well to fire an unstoppable shot past Hutchings to wrap up all three points in the 77th minute.

Poole’s long balls into the box were for naught as they were quite easily

dealt with the physical presence of the King’s Lynn defenders, one of which, No.4, was booked for going in late on Steve Devlin, who clearly didn’t appreciate the foul, receiving a yellow card for his reaction.

Sadly, Poole’s pressure failed to pay off, meaning the Dolphins’ 440 mile trip was in vain. A season is not won or lost in a game at this stage, so onwards to our next challenge, where we begin our FA Cup game at home to Barnstaple Town of North Devon. They currently reside in the Western Premier League, after winning the Western Division One last year.

Today we welcome Barnstaple for this FA Cup tie. I have had favour-able reports about Barnstaple and

they will provide a big test. The FA cup creates so much excitement at this level of football and I am desperate for us to have a good run. Having said that if you look beyond your first game you normally come unstuck. We just need to make sure we are as good as we can be today and hope that’s enough to progress.

Last weekend was a big set back for us. The club were brilliant in funding the cost of the team staying overnight on the Friday so we could have the best preparation possible. We stayed in a really good Hotel and did everything as professionally as possible. Unfortunately, we conceded three terrible goals from a defensive point of view albeit the second was brilliantly executed. That was too much for us to get anything from the game, although at 2-2 we looked by far the most likely winners only to concede two minutes after getting on level terms.

Although it was a long journey it was a great ground and a really good atmo-sphere. Personally, I don’t mind doing the miles if you play in a decent atmosphere with a reasonable crowd. Our supporters who travelled deserve great credit for turning up in such good numbers it really does demonstrate a huge passion and commitment for the team and is hugely appreciated.

I was really pleased to see both Will Spetch and Lewis Lindsay back in our starting XI last weekend. They are both brilliantly talented players and if they can both stay fit I have no doubt they will greatly enhance our chances of being successful . Will needs 3 or 4 more

games to be back to his very best but he will get there.

I am due to watch the u21’s in action tonight (Wednes-day) and then the U18s tomorrow and it gives me great pleasure to see the quality young players we have associated with or club and if you get the opportunity to watch either the u18s and or the u21’s please do so . Not only do they deserve our full support but the standard is very high.

The League table makes slightly dis-appointing viewing for us at the moment but things are very congested and all the signs are that it will be a very open title race this year. We need to stay consis-tent and focused and make sure we are in the mix come February/March. If we are then I think we will be difficult to stop as I firmly believe we will learn from the mistakes we made during last season’s run in. It’s the old cliché about not getting too carried away with victories or demor-alised by defeats that is the key. If you lose you need the strength of character to bounce back quickly and if you are winning games you mustn’t allow any complacency to creep in.

Anyway, today is a nice distraction from our league campaign and I hope everyone enjoys the occasion and we can put on a top performance that will get us through to the next round. I urge you to encourage the players as much as possible today it really does help.

TODAY’S CUP FORMAT:

Today’s game is over 90 minutes there will be no extra time or penalties. Should a replay be required it will be this Tuesday 15th September at Barnstaple Town FC, Mill Road, Barnstaple, Devon, EX31 1JQ with a 7.45 pm kick off. The game format for a replay will be over 90 minutes + 30 minutes extra time and penalties if required.

The draw for the 2nd Qualifying Rd it will take place on Monday 14th September the draw details are usually out by around lunch-time visit TheFA.com.

BARNSTAPLE TOWN – FA CUP RECORD IN 2015/16:

Barnstaple started out on the 15th August in the Extra Preliminary Rd with a 2 – 0 home win over fellow Western Premier side - Wil-land Rovers. Then in the Preliminary Rd on Saturday 29th August they won 2 – 0 again at home v Bridgwater Town from the Evo–Stik Division 1 South & West.

Finance is important in football, right down to the far-reaches of non-league.

And nothing is different in the ladies game. Poole Town ladies gained promotion to the South West Premier League last season but had to decline promotion due to the finances.

Unlike the men’s game, the players pay to play. And promotion, natural-ly, would increase travelling costs, something a self-sufficient team cannot do.

Stella Ayling hopes this season can boost awareness of the ladies team: “To raise more awareness of the ladies teams amongst the Poole Town supporters and community. I don’t think many know there are two ladies teams or that we play at the highest level for any club in Dorset. Many probably don’t realise that we pay to play, don’t receive any finan-cial assistance or that the players have to drive themselves to match-es, regardless of the venue.”

But on the field, the club has seen some changes both in terms of management and players: “After a slow start, the teams are starting to pull together,” Stella says. “We have recruited new players for the season after losing a number to University.

“On top of this, we have a new management team for the new season.”

While some players have left due

to university, some have left to join AFC Bournemouth, while others have left to focus on careers away from football.

This mostly happened from the under-16s team, and, as always, the club are looking for new players to join the ranks.

Stella also talks about how im-portant it is that Poole Town fans support the ladies team and for the club to help support the ladies team: “Very important - we need to raise awareness which will help with recruitment.

She continues: “We have lost players to AFC Bournemouth due to their promotion to the Premiership. We need to shout about successes together and work more together as a club - at the moment it feels very disjointed.”

This is not necessarily rare: some ladies clubs are barely supported compared to their male counter-parts.

Hopefully, then, the ladies can continue their success on the field with added support on the touch-lines.

Steve Moore was a player with AFC Bournemouth be-fore playing for Verwood

and Wimborne Town and you will no doubt recall his ‘tubby’ figure in midfield as I know he played against Poole Town during the last three years, albeit as a sub-stitute? He was a regular with Wimborne Town reserves and was never any trouble, just a per-fect player who was prepared to sit on the bench for the first team or help out the reserves.

Well the shattering news has come through that he has cancer of the Pancreas and the Liver, has already lost four stone in weight and has been given a life expectancy of only another four months, although he is on Chemotheraphy now.

His father approached the club to say that Steve would like to play a match with all his old pals from AFCB and WT against a WT team and this has been ar-ranged for Sunday 20th Septem-ber with a K.O at 1.00pm. In order to make the proceeds tax free, the BOD of WT can not arrange a benefit match but his friends can, hence I have been hauled in. Steve Fletcher I understand will play and Harry Redknapp will put his usual supporting role in.

We shall be holding a Barbe-cue/Tea Room/Raffle and Auc-

tion on the day and I feel sure that some of the supporters of PT, even in their red shirts, might wish to take part if they know about the event please?

Players like Gareth Barnes/Stewart Kearns/Mark Smith/Scott Joyce/Taffy Richardson have already agreed to take part and there will be news of this event in the Echo as they want to support it.

The match takes place on Sunday, September 20th with kick-off at 1pm.

A host of former players are set to play in the match, including Joe Parkinson, Matty Holmes, Brian Stock, Dave Moore, Russell Beardsmore and former Poole Town player and coach Shaun Brooks.
