“Architecture cannot be understood without some knowledge of the society it serves.”Sir Hugh Maxwell Casson An Introduction to Victorian Architecture.
“Architecture is the art of how to waste space.”Philip Cortelyou Johnson In the NewYork Times, 27 Dec.
These two phrases explain what Architecture is for me. Architecture is not only the capacity of increasing humans quality of life, but also the capacity of managing their relationship with other humans. For example, cre-ating common places where people can share lifes like cities or just squares. The way of creating buildings or cities can transform people and societies. It can make them feel calm or excited, free or repressed. For that reason, it has to be taken with a lot of caution and respect, trying to work for their own happiness. This explains that the solid space the arquitect creates is also as much im-portant as the empty space is left, not just the shape of the building. And of course it’s so important to know who the client is, their own his-tories, culture, local climate and also their way of construction. If we are aware of this, we could work for their own necesitieS, even it is a pri-vate client or a big city. And this is definitely, the good way to do architecture. Those issues are the most important, difficult and awesome tasks in architecture for me. The true meaning of architecture.
