Overseas investment options for SIA The sale of Virgin Airlines could spur overseas investment for Singapore Airlines…

S ingapore Airlines (SIA) could revisit overseas investment

plans in China and India should a deal go through on the sale of a 49% share in Virgin Atlantic.

Although the airline is unable to comment on investment plans while talks are underway, Chief Executive Offi cer GohChoonPhong told investors last month the airline is “very open” to investment opportunities in growth areas, including India, China and Southeast Asia.

Singapore Air said this week it’s in talks with Delta Air Lines to sell its 49% share of Virgin Atlantic as competition from Middle East carriers and slower growth in Europe and the U.S. hit long-haul travel. The carrier is instead focusing on growth in the Asia- Paci c region, buying a stake in Virgin Australia

Holdings and adding new planes for regional routes.

Paul Yong, Director of Research at Singapore-based DBS Vickers Securities told Bloomberg; “They’d be looking at mergers and acquisitions with or without this deal. But if it does go through, their war chest will be beefed up signi cantly.”

Singapore Air already has a stake in China Eastern-controlled China Cargo Airlines, and could make a new approach on China Eastern after having a bid turned down ve years ago. China Eastern Chairman Liu Shaoyong has reportedly said that the carrier is still open to selling a stake to a strategic investor. Meanwhile, China Southern Airlines is another attractive prospect as air travel in China continues its rampant growth.

Having previously shown interest in Air India, Singapore Air could also look for a deal in India following a recent loosening of foreign-investment rules. Bloomberg reports that Jet Airways is close to selling a 24% stake to Etihad, worth approximately US$290 million. Cash-strapped King sher Airlines, which halted operations in October, is also seeking outside investment.

Amadeus signs content deal with Virgin AustraliaA madeus has secured a multi-

year full content agreement with Australian airline, Virgin Australia, to guarantee subscribers worldwide access to the carrier’s full range of fares, inventory and schedules. With this agreement, Virgin Australia’s domestic and long haul schedules, fares, last seat availability and associated inventory will be available through the Amadeus system under the same conditions as that off ered through the airline’s website and other distribution channels. It will also ensure Virgin Australia’s fares and schedules are available via many points of sale to better serve travellers.

Qatar Airways set to upgrade Airbus A350 orderQ atar Airways has decided

to upgrade an order for 20 Airbus A350 aircraft to larger variants, a move that includes new backing for a model designed to compete with Boeing's 777 mini-jumbo, Reuters has reported. The Doha-based airline is expected to upgrade its order for the large A350-1000 variant to 37 planes from 20 and to increase its order for the base model, the A350-900, by some three planes to 43. Airbus has been campaigning for a second airline endorsement for the A350-1000 after a blank patch ended with a US$4 billion order from Cathay Pacific in July.

Single white male - cabin crew identify perfect passengerSkyscanner poll also reveals ight attendants’ biggest annoyances...

HAPPYTRAVELLERS

T he perfect airline passenger, according to ight attendants, is

a single white male. This was the key nding of a new

survey of cabin crew, conducting by travel search site Skyscanner. The company polled more than 700 international ight attendants from 85 countries, asking about their main passenger preferences and annoyances. The result found that the 'perfect passenger' was a white male in his 30s, travelling alone in economy class on a leisure trip, rather than business.

"This is the rst time that we've surveyed international cabin crew and the ndings give us a real insight into what they really think of passengers. And the results were certainly not what we expected," said Skyscanner's Sam Poullain. "Contrary to stereotypes, it's interesting to see that it's men who get the vote for the perfect

passenger, while cabin crew prefer to work in economy rather than premium class."

When asked about the most annoying passenger habits, ight attendants made it clear that they do not appreciate people clicking their ngers to get attention. This was named as the least desirable passenger trait, accounting for 26% of the vote. Leaving the seat too early on landing (13%) and trying to stuff too many bags in the overhead locker (11%) were also major irritants. It also appears that cabin crew do not appreciate fussy or demanding passengers, with asking for more blankets, diff erent meals and speci c drink brands all cited on the list of annoyances.

Stuffi ng rubbish in the seat compartments was also on high the list, identi ed as the main irritant for 9% of ight attendants. Click here for full story.

Thai PM meets with UK tour operators

Ms Yingkuck (pictured centre) hosted a reception at London’s Grosvenor House hotel, inviting top executives from STA, Hayes & Jarvis, Kuoni, Virgin Holidays, Thomas Cook, Trail nders, Chic Locations, Turquoise Holidays, Royal Orchid Holidays and Stella Travel Services. In an address, she outlined the trade partnership between the UK and Thailand and stressed the “quick recoveries” her country has made following recent problems.

Last year 771,466 Brits visited Thailand, with this number expected to increase to 810,000 in 2012.Click here for full story.

US con rms ETS billT he US government has passed a

bill that would potentially ban the country's airlines from participating in the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The House of Representatives passed the Senate-approved bill that allows the US Transportation Secretary to order American carriers not to participate in the ETS.

"The message could not be any clearer... EU ETS violates US sovereignty and will not do what it purports to as the funds do not have to be used for environmental protection," said Nicholas Calio, President & CEO of US aviation body, Airlines for America (A4A).

The EC announced its decision to 'pause' the ETS earlier this week, but while A4A said was “cautiously optimistic” about that action, it warned that it does not remove the threat of the ETS being implemented at a later date. The US legislation however, will make it more troublesome for Europe to resume the plan. China, India and Saudi Arabia have also ordered their airlines not to participate in the scheme.Click here for full story.

MAS returns to pro t

M alaysia Airlines (MAS) recorded a pro t for the three

months ending 30 September 2012, ending a run of six consecutive quarterly losses. The airline posted a net pro t of MYR37 million (US$12.1m) for the third quarter of 2012, its best quarterly result since Q4 2010 and a considerable improvement compared to the MYR478m loss it experienced during the same period last year.

MAS attributed the result to its route cutting programme,

which saw it slash capacity by 7% including the removal of services to Rome, Cape Town, Buenos Aires and Dubai. This resulted in a 9% reduction in fuel costs and a 7% drop in other operating expenses, while the group’s total revenue only decreased 2% to MYR3.5bn.

For the rst nine months of 2012, MAS has suff ered a net loss of MYR484m - 61% better than the MYR1.25bn de cit recorded in the same period last year. Click here for full story.

A ir Canada will launch new routes and add extra capacity to several

destinations in Asia next year, as part of a major expansion in the region. In its summer 2013 schedules, the national carrier will commence a new direct service between Toronto and Seoul, as well as adding seven weekly departures to Beijing and upgrading its Calgary-Tokyo Narita route.

"Air Canada is seizing the

opportunities of the Paci c Century with the most far-reaching international expansion of its schedule in its 75-year history," said Ben Smith, Air Canada's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Offi cer. "Our new routes embrace the world from Istanbul to Seoul and deepen our already extensive Asian service. With our Asia expansion alone, we will be ying 11 daily departures or more than 43,000 seats a week across the

Paci c Ocean this summer."Launching on 2 June 2013, the

new Toronto-Seoul service will operate three times a week using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. It will complement the airline's existing Vancouver-Seoul service, meaning that Air Canada will provide daily ights to Seoul from the two Canadian hubs.

Also commencing in June will be an additional three weekly departures between Toronto and Beijing, taking the total route frequency to 10 ights per week. The ights will also be operated with a B777-300ER aircraft. Four extra weekly ights will also be added to the Vancouver-Beijing route, for a total of 11 weekly departures, including a new late night ight. These ights will be operated with a B767-300ER aircraft.

On the Calgary-Tokyo Narita route, Air Canada will add two extra weekly ights in May next year, taking the total route frequency to daily. The ights will also be operated with a B767-300ER. Click here for full story.

ANA maintains Chinese capacity cutsJ apan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA)

has announced that it will continue operating a reduced capacity on some Chinese routes, due to the currently downturn in demand for ights between the two countries. The dispute over a group of uninhabited islands has caused Chinese arrivals to Japan to slump more than 30%, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). Due to this, ANA has now replaced its larger twin-aisle aircraft with single-aisle jets on the key Tokyo-Beijing, Tokyo-Shanghai and Osaka-Beijing routes. JAL has also reduced the frequency of ights on several Chinese routes.
