Compositions to understand the masses value , the positive & negative spaces

Based on the de stilj movement and inspired from the work of Piet modrian an attempt to understand basics of colours.

Designing a logo depicting Mahatma gandhi’s simplicity, minimalist approach, sacrifice, far sightedness, truth and peace.

Studying the champa tree, its fromation and clustering of leaves. Deriving the patterns found from the veins in leaves and making a tessilation from it.Using that to design an open landscape

Designing compositions showing the basic principles of designing: balance, geometric order, randomness, rhythm, lateral and bilateral symmetry, datum, harmony.

Semester-1 (space making)Exercise given was to understand the spatial sense of a dense old city of Rajkot which is depicted in the model. Later to design a space for gold smith based on antropometry

Semester-2 (place making)Designing a place on a grid of 60x60cm and clay was the material to be used for model making. On the grid, plinths were to be designed and then further other elements like wall, tree, ramp and steps. The constraint here was once an element is kept in design we had to freeze it and introduce other elements with its reference. The above model shows how the place making was for me at that point of time

Semester-3Through documenting and understanding the old city of Rajkot we had to make an architectural intervention in that dense fabric which would be appropriate in that area. Further understanding the context I decided to design a cafe on top of a rushing narrow street and opening out some space on ground in contrast to the dense built around.

Page 7: Portfolio-Chitvan Trivedi

Design aspects at institutional scale were taught by an exercise of designing a neighbourhood center at Rajkot. The site had three edges which were surrounded by the roads and the fourth edge terminated at railway line. Hence the site was of more visibility and in a public domain. As it is for the neighbourhhood scale activities of weaving, basket making and other handicrafts designing were taken as main functional spaces to design, after a contextual research. The concept shows a bold step to keep around 3/4th of site free as maidan which acts as a place to play and gather. Thus the built block is placed near the railway line and the fore ground is kept as a free maidan. MS structural members are used to give an overall lightness and transparency to the built form.

Housing plays a vital role in planning the urban scenarios for the future. The exercise here was to design 440 affordable housing for the families who resides in Rajkot city for their livelyhood and has been migrated from their native places. Initially during the brainstorming, the importance of habitat was understood and the journey of man from shelter to housing was conjectured. Further we detailed out 4 major aspects of housing on which we focused upon. i.e. dwelling units, building type, services & open spaces.

Concerns for the ideal built environment were formed as shown in the conceptuals according to the site given to us. The design of the housing focused upon the heirarchy of the open spaces, the oppertunity of personalization to the dwellers, deriving built language considering the climatic conditions & a sense of community between the dwelling units. The building starts at a podium level, having the car park below. Open spaces were planned in such a way that the ground becomes vehicle free promoting the pedestrian movements to create an engaging environment.

In urban studio the intent was to study the Rajkot city. Documneting the landuse, building use, origin-destination, slums and other 50 such layers. On analyzing these layers we identified the issues and generalized into differnt categories such as transport, sector development, precinct, slums, rivers and lakes etc. Based on that a holistic vision and a masterplan for the city was prepared. Further I was associated to the issues related to transport.

Making an appropriate strategy for resolving the transport issues which further narrowed down to 3 ways of implementing: strategies and guidelines, area level urban design and architectural interventions. design studio - 9

Focusing on the current issues and foreseeing the future of the transport of the city was also an important aspect. Transit system, road network and junctions, transit oriented development were amongst the prior subjects for which strategies were to be made. Thereby further I was into the planning of transit oriented development at the second ringroad of the city. Forming the guidlines, deciding the land use, the proportions of commercial, residential and recreational activities in the development was a part of it.In the attempt of making a transit oriented development 3-4 typologies were derived for the building use, the road section for making public realm was designed, junctions were resolved and much more.

Mutual sharing and interaction are ways through which people express themselves with other. Beyond this space, time, people and other such parameters also play a vital role in creating a comfortable environment to express. Delivery of expressions is very crucial to vent out our mental conflicts which is very natural. Public spaces play an important role to act as a platform to deliver the expressions. Hence I found it intresting to work on this subject for my dissertation. It can provide a platform to express to youth which can channelize their energies in a constructive manner and decrease the stresses from their mind. The study has 3 parts with a final out come of design demonstration. First in research theoritical review on expressions, psychology to express, youth and their behavior and the nature of place to express were studied. Secondly mapping of informal spaces of gathering and analysis of selected cases. Further I took formal cases to derive the architectural program.

Here on left are the illustrated sketches depicting the scenarios of informal public gathering at Ahmedabad. The drawings above shows the site selection and site analysis process. The site is taken at sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad.

While developing the concept for the design, concerns for built environment were marked from the prior cases studied. Then further schematic sketches of spaces and some spatial scenarios depicting the nature of space were made. Flexibility, visual penetration, planning of comprehending activities and strategies for developing such linear site.

As the site is linear it becomes critical to planout the spaces. Here the spaces are in such a way that the silent and formal activties are on one end(left side in plan) and the chaotic and informal activities are on the other end. The activities on left have permenance and on right are temporary and flexible. In the design spaces between the built block were of more concern to create an engaging platform. Thus strategically such informal nonbuilt spaces are kept which breaks the built and creates a pause and oppertunity to engage the users. It breaks down the masses and monotony creating an curoius composition of spaces. All these fragments of spaces are united by the roof which holds the built form below.

This is at the centre of the ahmedabad city at sabarmati riverfront which connects east & west Ahmedabad. Treating the edges was critical in designing as the site was 380 meters long. On the edges there are different nature of spaces to sit and interact. There are some spaces designed which makes the user to participate in it, for eg. there is a maze where one engages himself and a tree at the centre to locate themselves. On one end there is open landscape holding multiple layers of activities such as a flee market , volleyball court for playing games and a concert place.

Thus overall it is designed as a campus with variety of spaces which holds the youth with an curious investigative journey of spaces and also becomes a city level platform to express.

Masonry, door-window & many such details made my interest to the subject. Later understanding materials like concrete, wood and metal was very vital.

Exploring advanced const. system like tensigrity and tensairity. Applying the structural knowledge in bridge design competition, gained me second position.

The most interesting exercise was designing structure by reusing the materials & making it low cost . It was very brainstorming deriving new construction techniques

Related study programme is a mandate in our academics where it focuses on documneting the buildings. Its core intent is to understand the architecture of a particular place, its regional identity, its history and influence, its building techniques, craftsmanship and many such layers. The study has three levels one understanding a village, a residence in a city and an institutional building.

The facade branding was an idea of using perforated sheet depicting the meshed vastra of a women, wrapped around the structural framework. The single peice railing in black gives an ornamental aesthetic to the space. Earth colour are used and a mural of pots and earthen tavas to light up the space.

Fabvastra is a brand for indo-ethinic wear for women. This is the first retail outlet of it besides its online presence. The design concept was to give a blend of a modern day neater look with a flavour of ethnic indian values to it. The material pallete chosen here was bison panels, metal perforated sheet & mild steel rods.

Melange - the annual festival of our college held for three days with lectures ,concert and other workshops. Footprints and impressions was the theme, so the campus planning was done accordingly. Entrance had an artwork made in which footprints goes from floor to wall in contrast to the architect’s footprint.

Installation out of used boxes was designed depicting a bird ,below each box there was a footprint of a bird.Amphitheatre was decorated with the lights which where in form of drops falling from sky. Concert area was given a raw industrial feel and much more these images say. campus planning

These are some works where I tried to work with differnt mediums expressing myself.

I was also interested in wood cut print making & paper cutting. Besides that I explored differnt materials like clay, wood, pop and leather. Further being keen about product design, I attempted to design some products like leather bag, a drafting desk and candles.
