EAR/ME;rZ rnroR~ (Continued)

The Business ConnJittee expressed concerns over the positions of TormrJ Thompsonon several Indian Issues, particularly the issue of Indian Treaty Rights.Thompson has endorsed the creation of a presidential commission to reviewIndian Rights and consider the abrogation of treaties. Thanpson also hasaligned himself with g-r;oups in furthern Wisconsin who are opposed to theFishing Rights gu?ranteed to Tribes through Treaties. Based on these DNOissues alone, he doesn't appear to be a Friend of the Indian.

In addition, Thompson has pledged a sweeping welfare budget cut across theboard WITHOur respect for any program. This means several social programsimportant to disadvantaged minorities would be categorically sliced. Thoseprograms would include RNIP, AFOC, Alcohol and Drug Abuse programs, HigherEducation and lIealth and Social Services funding.

In exanrlning the records of Tony Earl and Sharon Metz, the Business Conmitteediscovered they had worked hard to better the relationship between the stateand tribal govenm::nts.

Both were active in the cigarette tax compromise which allaNs for the sharingof those tax benefits by both the tribes and the state. .Both candidatessupported increased scholarship programs for Indian students; and bothsupported budget arrendII£nts which increase~ law enforc~t aids for countiesdiat improved the quality of law enforc~t services on Indian Reservationswithin their bOtllldries.

The Business CoIIIIlittee ~ded Governor Earl for his Executive Order 1/31~ch directs state administrators, agencies and secretaries to cooperate withthe Indian GovennIEnts in Wisconsin. The order directs state governIIErlt to~rk with Indian goverrmEnts in a spirit of negotiation as upheld throughfederal law and Supre:ne Court rulings.

'The Oneida Tribe therefore is actively supporting Tony Earl and Sharon Metz. The Business COO'mittee urges your support for these tv70 officials and warns ofdire consequences for Indians if they are nor re-elected.

Kathy nKJVed to approve the proposed endorsen:ent of Earl[t1etz letter, J:.1ark

seconded. MJtion carried.
