President’s Corner Lynne Fletcher These are turbulent times. Hurricanes, earthquakes and fires on a global level and the people we support are scrambling for funding. We need to keep on keeping on with all the good we do.

For the holidays I hope that we can all enjoy our good fortunes while remembering those less fortunate. We do it all year round, but let's make the holiday season extra special. Please read on to keep abreast of all the upcoming ways you can get involved and to see that all your efforts do not go unnoticed. We have dynamic committee chairs and board members who are committed to helping as many people as we can, so we do need to keep on keeping on with all the good we do. Light, love and laughter, Lynne

Membership/ Mentoring Program

Karen Batterman

As of this writing, our Club boasts 163 members – comprised of 98 Active, 18 Active Honorary and 47 Honorary. Of course, since books were printed in August, we have had several changes. Please update your 2017-2018 Membership Book with the following changes. Sadly, we said good-by to two of our members. Pam Brown, a member since 2009, passed away on September 9. Betty Smouse, a member since 1996, passed away on September 20. Please move them to the “In Loving Memory” section of your book. Happily, we have added three new members. Lynne Fletcher sponsored Barbara Porch, and Judy Schieck sponsored Louise Lewitan and Pat Martin. Please add these three new members to your book.

Public Issues Sheila Eisen Maria Schwartz Thank you for your support of Open Arms Mission's Socks for the Soul! We collected 345 pairs of socks and $78 in cash and checks! You are awesome! Most of us may not have experienced natural disasters and/or large emergency events; however, we need to be prepared at all times. Know how to stay safe in crisis situations. You can take steps NOW to help you prepare for

an emergency and cope if a public health emergency such as natural disaster, act of terrorism, or disease outbreak happens. * Make a basic emergency kit: 1 gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation, a supply of non-perishable foods to last 3 days, a can opener, utensils to prepare and serve food, a battery-powered radio and an NOAA Weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both, a flashlight and extra batteries, a First Aid kit, a whistle to signal for help, a 3-day supply of essential medicines, family documents and cash in waterproof containers, a compass, personal care items, plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place, and a wrench to turn off utilities. In the winter, a jacket or coat, a shirt, shoes, pants, a hat and gloves, and a blanket per person. Don't forget your pets! * Make a plan: set up a communication plan and multiple meeting places outside the home, determine safe spots and escape routes at home, and discuss when to call 911. Practice with the family. * Be informed: have access to a radio, phones, cell phones, text, internet, social media, sirens, road signs. Source: Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response

Coupons Sigrid Brueggemann Thank you for cutting coupons during the summer! I sent over 17,000 coupons to our military families in Germany. Remember we sort the coupons into 5 categories: Food, Household, Beauty and Health, Kids, and Pets. Please count the coupons and write your name on the envelope. Also include the number of hours it took you to sort and count the coupons. At the end of the year, you will receive credit for the total number of coupons and hours you worked. See you at your next meeting. Don't forget your coupons!

International Outreach Mary Ware Lee Anderson I would like to send a thousand thank you’s to my amazing committee-- Anna, Maureen, Jean, Peggy, Barb, Hilda, Carolyn, Joanne, Diana, and Lee for going through 15 boxes and 6 bags of donated material at our first meeting and having time to also cut 12 quilt tops and sew 3 quilt tops from Jean

Johnson. I have my very own set of energizer bunnies. A special thank you shout out to Margaret Cole for most of the fabric and yarn donations, and to Gaye Walters for her amazing dresses. Our last meeting for this calendar year will be Monday, Nov. 27 at The Meeting House from 9AM to Noon. No December meeting. Support Our Troops Karen Potter

Please bring items for our troops overseas and bring them to our meetings in November, January, and April. Our troops can use most everything we use in everyday life

but in smaller size: toiletries, candy, packaged drinks, small packages of cookies, crackers, munchies-- you get the idea. Please remember the female troops and the items that they can use: tampax, deodorants, and powders. We thank you for your generous donations as they are very much appreciated.

Education Committee Maureen Fremgen The W.C. Petty School Reading Program has started. There have been a few time changes since last year. Some of the teachers have changed

the times from one hour to one half hour. The volunteers for October were: Second Grade: Karen Batterman, Joan Foss, Carol Scholle, Barbara Mitzel, Kathy LaBuda, Judy Melind and substitute: Barbara Ocwieja. The third grade readers are Mary Ann Lhotka and I. Thank you for volunteering and helping with the on-going program. The teachers and children always seem to look forward to the time we spend with the children. We have substitutes that are willing to help when one of us would not be available. You can always call the school or me if there is a question or if you will not be available. If there is anyone who would like to be on the substitute list, please let me know. The afternoon time slots were eliminated because the teachers have a conflict at that time. Times for second grade on Tuesday and Thursday are: 8:40 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. and one second grade 9:50 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. The third grade time is 9:40 a.m. to 10:10 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

Conservation Karen Noland & Sally Rodgers Please keep collecting #6 Styrofoam, pop can tabs, wine corks, old textiles and clothing, and used ink and toner cartridges. Our efforts have saved an enormous amount of waste from our landfills. Kudos, Ladies! Waste Management has stopped accepting electronics,

so if you are looking for a place to dispose of some, here’s an alternative.

Domestic Violence Andrea Macek Heather Menzer Safe Place Clothes Collection—Suspended

In the past we have been collecting clothes at the November meeting to bring to God's Will for women from the Safe Place to go with a voucher to shop. It has been brought to my attention that A Safe Place is not utilizing God's Will for clothes shopping any longer. They will get back to me about this, but for now, do not bring clothes donations to the November meeting. In the meantime A Safe Place is having a Thanksgiving Drive, and they are looking to supply their families and pantry with the fixings for Thanksgiving. If everyone could bring some of the following to our November Meeting, I would greatly appreciate it. Here is what they recommend: Canned: Veggies Gravy Cranberries Green beans Corn Mushroom Soup Pumpkin Boxed: Potatoes: Au Gratin or Mashed etc. Cake Mixes & Frosting Pie Crusts

Card Ambassador Norma Lucansky As your Card Ambassador I continue to send out cards to our members. We have sent out cards expressing sympathy and get well wishes since our last newsletter.

Because of the size of our membership, I have to depend on all of you to keep me informed when a member should be sent a card and for what reason. After I receive the information and send a card, I will let you know that it has been taken care of. I would prefer receiving an email: [email protected]; however, you may also tell me in person or call me at 847-395-7666. Donations of greeting cards that you would like contribute are always appreciated. Thank you for your support.

The Legend of Santa Lucia

In Sweden, a popular custom centers around Saint Lucia, a maiden who lived during Roman Times. According to legend, St. Lucia gave her dowry to some poor Christians on her wedding day and was condemned to be burned at the stake for doing so. Today, St. Lucia’s Day begins the Christmas season in Sweden on December 13. Traditionally, the eldest daughter of the household, wearing a halo of lighted candles and a white dress with a red sash, serves coffee and Lucia cakes to her family at dawn on that day. Also, today, the ceremony is often observed publicly in schools, churches, and civic halls.
