Congdon Elementary School
We decided to work with the 5th grade class at Congdon Elementary School in New Bedford. We set up a meeting with the principal, Steve Machado as well as Mr. Costa and Ms. DaCosta, the 5th grade teachers to discuss with them what we were planning to do with the students.
DAY 1: Friday, April 15. Lesson Plan
• Showed a video about the effects of littering on the environment and birds
• Administered a self test to see how much the students knew about the topic
• Went over the lesson plan, in which students had to pay close attention and fill in the blanks to the hand out we had passed out prior to starting the lesson plan
• “I Pledge To” posters that were going to be displayed around the school
• Recycling word search with homework passes as prizes for the first three to finish
• Trivia game with them to test what was learned from lesson. Prizes were given out also!
The Standard Times came to the school and took pictures of the clean up and also asked the students about what their thoughts were on littering and what they were doing that day to help their school.
• Although it was very windy and cold during the school clean up, the students were still trying to clean up their yard and fill the trash bags with as much trash as possible before the rain started and it was time to go inside.
• From the money that we raised with our sponsors, we ordered popsicles for the students to thank them for helping out during the clean up.
DAY 2: Friday, April 12. School Clean up
Congdon Elementary School
By the end of the two days that we had with the 5th grade students, it was clear for us to see the impact
that we had on the students.
The Standard Times
We were able to get two articles published in the Standard Times about our work with Operation Clean Sweep and Congdon Elementary School.
Earth Eve Parade
• We constructed a float to raise awareness about recycling and littering
• The float was to be carried in the AHA Earth Eve Parade in New Bedford
Float Design• Our float was
constructed of recyclable materials, plywood, and recycling bins
• Inside each bin were a few different types of recyclable materials– Paper – Glass– Aluminum– Cardboard– Plastic
Creativity• We had brainstormed
ideas for our float but Operation Clean Sweep did not agree with some of our ideas.
• We had to alter our initial ideas to please our community partner and meet the PPF requirements.
• The float was a success!
Float Awareness
• On each of the bins were posters we created • These posters portrayed different facts on littering and
recycling
• This was to raise awareness about how littering can impact the environment
Team Experience
Lessons Learned• Communication– Facebook page,
email text messaging
– Facilitating open communication
• Collaboration– Collaboration is
essential to ensure success
– Problem solving
Lessons Learned •Constructive criticism –Difficulties with accountability–Lack of commitment by one person can affect entire team
