To realize (put into full use) the potential skills you already have in English speaking and listening. To decrease your stress in speaking English and increase your enjoyment of communication in another language!......and, last but not least, To pass the final exam! Course Objectives: Part 2 To practice and develop your English writing composition skills via 3 essay assignments: Descriptive essay Comparison and Contrast essay Argumentative Essay Final Exam Guidelines The students should take two exams: one written exam, which includes translation and writing, and one speaking exam. The speaking section amounts to 20% of the total score, writing and translation 60%. The rest, that is 20%, comes from the student's class performance, attendance, and assignments. Therefore, we can use the following formula: Students' final score = Speaking 20% + Writing & Translation 60% + Class Performance 20% There is no listening exam at the end of the term, but at least two quizzes will be given during the course, the result of which will be taken as part of the class performance. Note: The spring semesters final exam will count for 40% of your YEAR grade for this English course. Speaking Exam- Summary The speaking exam will involve working with a partner of your choice to deliver a 3 minute dialogue based on a topic taken from one of the following sources: 1. Units covered from last semesters reading and listening texts 2. This semesters New Interchange 3 Video Activity Book You and your partner will have 6 minutes to prepare a dialogue based on the topic you receive. (you may not refer to any related materials) Topics will be drawn at random from several possibilities you wont know ahead of time, so be familiar with all the topics covered both last semester and this semester! Speaking Exam- More Details In the speaking exam, students are required to do pairwork. But if the class has an odd number, a group of three is allowed. Students decide on their partner one or two weeks before the exam. During the exam, Step 1. Each pair draws one question by lot. Step 2. Prepare for 6 minutes, not allowed to refer to their notes or any related materials. Step 3. Present a 3-minute conversation in front of a teacher. (Normally, the teacher tests only students from other classes, not his own classes.) Step 4. Teachers score the students on the basis of content, fluency, pronunciation and intonation, and grammar. The questions in the exam come from the lessons covered in the first term (Sept Jan. 2011), including Exploring Horizon ( )and Listening and Speaking for Postgraduates ( ), and also Interchange -- the book we use this second term (Feb July 2011). (from unit 5, Exploring Horizon) Some questions may be taken directly from the three books mentioned above, or slight changes made to them; some may be questions related to the topics from the three books. You are encouraged to write down some notes/ideas to help you get started and organize your thoughts. Do not try to write a finished essay, however. Homework: Role-play your own Dream Date Work in your small groups outside of class time and act- out your own Dream Date program. Depending on your group makeup, you may have 3 bachelors or 3 bachelorettes. If you have a group of 5, one of you can be the program host. Use the 3 questions below from the video we watched, plus two more of your own questions. Be prepared to present your program to the class if asked please keep your time between 5-7 minutes! 1.
