Abstract

Thispaperdevelopsascepticalapproachontheprocessofreessencegivingfortheuseofindustrialspaceswithintheurbanlandscape.Industrialcomplexes,districts,buildingsandotherspacesdevelopedduringthepastontheedgeofthecityandtheindustry gave meaning to both areas and uses. Today, they rest as elements ofmemoryandembodied (?)partsof themodernurbancultural landscape.Followingdeindustrialisationandtheexodusofbotheringactivitiesoutoftheurbancomplex,these areas receive new uses andmeanings.At the same time they oftenbecameobjects of dispute considering they functional relocationwithin the contemporaryurbancomplex. Inbetweenprivate industrialownershipandpublicculturalheritagethese spaces obtain new uses, forms and functions. In the theoretical part of thisessay,wediscussthe issueof industrialownershiptransitionfromtheprivatespheretothepublicdomainbasedontheculturalheritageliterature.Intheempiricalpart,wemap the new uses of those spaces in the context of four large cities of Greece(Thessaloniki,Volos,Athensand Irakleio)witha significant industrial tradition.Theobjectiveofthisresearchistoretrospectivelystudytheperpetualevolutionintheuseofthosespacesandthusunderlinetheircontributionintheformationofanewurbangeography.
